Eric Carle was born and lived in Germany but moved to the United States of America where hehas been writing and illustrating children’s books for over 40 years.

Before Eric Carle was an author / illustrator he was a Graphic Designer. Author Bill Martin noticed his work and asked him to illustrate his book Brown Bear Brown Bear, What Do You See? This was the first book Eric Carle illustrated.

Eric Carle paints large pieces of tissue paper using a variety of tools. He loves to create textures with paint and his tools.

Can you see how he scraped away the top layer of paint?

Eric Carle cuts his painted papers apart and puts them together to form his illustrations. He loves to layer his papers. Did you know he uses an exacto knife, not scissors?

Eric Carle loves to create bright and colorful images

The themes of his stories are usually drawn from Eric Carle’s knowledge and love of nature. And, besides being beautiful and entertaining, his books always offer the child the opportunity to learn something about the world around them, or a life lesson.
