HERE IN PRINCE GEORGE'S 1 Vol. 1, No. 2 HERE IN PRINCE GEORGE'S Robeks Posted on February 16, 2010 10260 Baltimore Ave., Suite 1 College Park, Maryland 20740 http://www.robeks.com Good for you can also be good to you. Made-to-order smoothies and shakes containing fresh fruits and veggies are Robeks’ claim to fame. They also offer sandwiches, salads, wraps, pretzels, muffins, and cookies. (One tip: I’d avoid the spinach feta pretzel. I’ve never had it, but when I asked one of the employees at Robeks in Virginia, a subtle shake of her head was all I needed.) I have to tell you that my favorite happens to be something called the 800 lb. Gorilla™ Protein Shake. Bananas, peanut butter, chocolate, yogurt. 50 grams of protein. Yep I said 50. And you can tell. I usually only have this shake when I know I’m going to have one of those lunch-less days or when it’s a school night, so I won’t get home until 9:30 p.m. It’s two meals in a cup with a straw. Everyone seems to have their favorites on Robeks menu ; whether it be a strawberry- pineapple smoothie, a banana split shake, or a raspberry lemonade. Silver Diner Posted on February 15, 2010 6040 Greenbelt Road Greenbelt, Maryland 20770 http://www.silverdiner.com/restaurants/greenbelt-silver-diner Who doesn’t like diner food? Sometimes you just want a burger and a shake, right? Nothing too fancy; just really good. That’s where the Silver Diner comes in. In fact, the Silver Diner might be one of those places where you stop in the middle of the night just for dessert . Why not; they’re open until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Somewhat large portion sizes mean you get more bang for your buck. It’s a great place for groups and children . You can get beer and wine and there’s even carryout. Looking for something different for breakfast ? Try the Maryland Crabcakes Benedict. Pecan and sweet potato pancakes for brunch . Have a triple decker club for lunch . And for dinner , Cajun pork chops. Or for you old school types: Liver and onions. I’m not going there, but you should feel free. The gist is this: A diner is usually a good thing. And the Silver Diner is no exception. Check it out. And by the way, there are several other Silver Diner locations, but this one’s in P.G. County. What to Do? What To Do? Sunday Brunch at Peachez Café and Lounge. Visit http://www.peachezcafeandlounge.com/.

Simple Pleasures Ice Cafe

Posted on February 14, 2010

13015 Ninth Street Bowie, Maryland 20720 http://www.simplepleasuresicecafe.vpweb.com

I know what you’re thinking: Ice cream. In the middle of the snowiest winter we’ve had since before we recorded such information for posterity’s sake. For some reason, I consume more ice cream when it’s cold outside than when it’s a typical 98-degree, hazy, hot, and humid day in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Call me crazy. It’s OK.

So, like most of the places I’ve written about on this site, I’ve never been to the Simple Pleasures Ice Cafe. But I want to. Does that count? Sure it does. You gotta have goals, right? I’m always intrigued by the slightly different. Perhaps because I’m slightly different. But whenever you get an ice cream shop that calls banana pudding one if it’s standard ice cream flavors, it makes me wonder what their weekly special offerings could be. So I called. This week, it’s turtle swirl, dulce de leche, sweet potato pecan, apple dapple crisp, and chocolate brownie points. Not too shabby, huh?

Simple pleasures also serves Italian ice, holds afternoon teas, and you can buy party packs for small gatherings, or even rent a mobile cart for full-blown parties and ice cream socials.

I’m intrigued.

Sweet Tooth Cakes & Pastries

Posted on February 13, 2010

56 Ritchie Road Capitol Heights, Maryland 20743 http://www.sweettoothcakesandpastries.net

Anyone who knows me knows that I absolutely love cake. There’s nothing better. Really. My motto is “Because cake is good.” So when I discovered the caramel cake at Sweet Tooth, I knew that it would forever be my favorite cake.

One day, my parents were having a barbecue and I was supposed to bring dessert. Too lazy to bake anything, I stopped at the bakery and chose the caramel cake because I knew it would remind my mom of the homemade caramel cakes that my grandmother used to bake. It did. And that’s when we decided that that would be our wedding cake flavor. (I swear I won’t be one of those people who keeps talking about her wedding!)

So you know how people often return from wedding receptions and they say one of two things:

1. the cake was beautiful, but it wasn’t good, or

2. the cake was unattractive, but it tasted good.

Well, we didn’t have either problem. Our cake had no fondant; just a nice clean icing job. And it was fantastically fresh. In fact, people still remember how tasty our cake was. And that’s how it should be.

So, you get my point right? If it’s good enough for a wedding cake, it’s good enough for any kind of occasion that requires dessert. (And let’s face it, any kind of event not requiring a cake just isn’t worth having.) Don’t like caramel? Try the carrot cake. Try the red velvet. Try the sour cream pound cake. Try it all.
