Childhood • Born July 30, 1863• He constructed his first steam engine in 1878 at age 15.• Was known around neighborhood as “The boy who fixed watches”.

Career• First working gasoline engine created in 1893.• In 1896 he completed his first horseless carriage, the “Quadricylce”. • One year after his marriage to Clara Bryant, Ford becomes the chief engineer at the main Detroit Edison Company Plant.

Ford Motor Company• Founded June 16, 1903• Ford Company was just one out of 15 car manufacturers in Michigan at the time. • The goal for the Ford Motor Company was to make an affordable, sturdy car for the average American. • The first car produced by Ford was the Model A.

Model T• In 1908, the production of the Model T finally began.• Selling price was $850 each. • This car soon became popular. Ford found that he was unable to meet the enormous demand for his cars.

The Assembly Line• Assembly line allowed Ford’s workers to perform the same task repeatedly on multiple vehicles that passed by.• Ford was the first to use the assembly line outside of slaughterhouses.• The assembly line lowered Ford’s cost so much that he reduced the Model T’s price to $260.

Ending His Career• By 1927 the Model T had ended production. Between 1908 to 1927 over 15,000,000 Model T’s were sold. It was the car which “put America on wheels.”• In 1938 Ford suffered a stroke though it didn’t put him out of retirement. • In 1945 he turned over his company to his grandson and at the age of 83 Henry Ford passed away.
