The woodcarver Henning Engelsen (1918–2005) was recognised throughout the world.

His gift was rare:

A combination of creative mind and imagination that gave birth to his many characters.

He had the artist’s skill to fashion them from a piece of carefully selceted and seasoned wood.

Henning chose the subjects he knew best.Through these you come to know Norway and its culture:

The Vikings

The love of the sea.

The local cultural heritage.

Old norwegian folklore is rekindled through his colourful and humoristic trolls.

Hennings many animals are to be seen as perfect representations of the nordic wild life.

The Henning workshop was established in 1947.

Idyllically located in the stunning norwegian inland.

Two of Hennings daughters, Angelina and Christl,

and son in law, Bjarne Espedal, have continued…

…along the path masterfully prepared by Henning Engelsen.

Working by their fathers side since an early age…

and later entering reknowned schools of art in both Norway and Germany,

the two daughters have not only prolonged Engelsen’s life time achievement–

– they have also added their generations touch to the unique heritage.

Stilistically their additions are typical scandinavian,

both traditional and forward looking,

yet unique pieces of artistic craftsmanship and design.

Every year before Christmas, the Engelsen family opens their home to customers:

Their little shop, MESTERSTUEN dating back to 1750, is an embodiment of of true norwegian authenticity. Filled with a heartwarming sincerity and artistic craftsmanship on the highest level.

The tradition lives on…
