Hennepin Technical College LaunchesWith the launch of its M-Powered

Biotechnology Sector Initiative,

Hennepin Technical College’s

Customized Training Services is embarking on a project funded by

a $2.6 million U.S. Department of Labor grant, which was announced in

July 2010. As a continuation of HTC’s highly successful M-Powered manufacturing training program, the biotech initiative utilizes the industry-driven, employer focused collaborative effort that has been preparing entry-level employees for manufacturing positions for over five years. Now, to support Minnesota’s biotech industry, HTC and its partners are using the M-Powered model to duplicate that effective training for incumbent workers, as well as the unemployed. Business and community leaders joined educators and students at HTC to celebrate the official launch of the program on October 26.

“Collaboration is the key to this initiative, and we are so grateful for the support of our two United States Senators, Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar,” said Rich Kelly, director, Manufacturing Quality and Productivity for Customized Training Services at HTC. He also noted the college’s longtime partnership with non-profit workforce development agency HIRED and the support of the BioBusiness Alliance of Minnesota. “If you look at people inside successful manufacturing companies, you see that they have maintained their stackable credentials and continued to develop advanced skills. That’s accomplished through job training, industry training and apprenticeships. It’s all tied together,” Kelly added.

In a letter congratulating the partners on the launch, Sen. Franken wrote: “I have toured biotechnology and medical device businesses around the state and I know how critical the need is for highly-skilled employees. The graduates of the M-Powered Bio-Medical Manufacturing Sector Initiative will be joining a vital part of our economy and will help ensure the growth and sustainability of the biotechnology industry in Minnesota.”

Being prepared for opportunitiesM-Powered participants gain key skills through a combination of classroom, lab and on-the-job training that prepares them for success in the workplace.

“The program trains workers for the medical device, biotech, and renewable materials industries, all of which share common skill sets. The M-Powered program has done its research to understand where the most in-demand opportunities will come for Minnesota manufacturing.”

“The M-Powered program is unique in that it understands that the manufacturing skills necessary for today’s and tomorrow’s jobs have application to many industries,” said Rebekah Kent, vice president, Medical Technology Business Cluster for the BioBusiness Alliance of Minnesota.

For Rachel Cage, an M-Powered student with six children to support, the program is providing an opportunity to improve her skills and plan for a brighter future. Cage had manufacturing experience, but her previous employer went out of business. Then she was hired by Marshall Manufacturing and learned about the company’s involvement with the M-Powered program. “I’m learning specifically what I need to know in my current job,” said Cage. “Once I’m done with the basic classes, I plan to take more specialized classes because the more skills I have the better job security I’ll have. I hope to someday be able to afford a house and a college education for my children.”

As Jane Samargia, executive director of HIRED, pointed out, “The people who come to us are from every demographic in our community. Some have never worked, some are immigrants from throughout the world, thousands are facing painful career transitions or are veterans trying to find their place in the civilian labor market.”

She emphasized that M-Powered graduates are workers who will be needed over the next several years to replace skilled workers who are retiring, to support business growth and the economic vitality of the community.

Looking ahead“I think there is a real sense of optimism and excitement about the program,” said M-Powered student John Hermanson, a former Marine with fifteen years of manufacturing experience with wood and wood substitutes. His employer closed down at the beginning of 2010, and he came to the program after several months of searching for a job. He sees the training as a way to build the skills employers are looking for today.

Using the M-Powered model of helping individuals build stackable credentials that translate into good pay manufacturing jobs, the M-Powered Biotechnology Sector Initiative offers a collaborative approach to creating a highly skilled workforce for Minnesota’s biotech industry.

For information about the program, contact Rich Kelly at 763.488.2728 or [email protected].

“I was told by the employment agency that by attending the Medical Device Manufacturing WorkFast program that was a deciding factor in my being hired. It was nice for me personally to be able to speak the "lingo" of the medical device industry during the interview and actually understand what I was talking about and sound literate on the subject. Kudos to Naomi and you for putting on a great class.”

WorkFast Programs – Short-term training for transitional workers

Customized Training Services offers WorkFast programs as a cohort model for dislocated workers. Call 952.995.1330 or visit our website at www.hennepintech.edu/cts/workfast for more information.

We are working hard with our partners in industry, education, government and non-profit organizations to develop HTC’s WorkFast programs – short-term intense training programs that lead to employment for Minnesota workers. Our goal is to offer quality, stackable training that results in competitive skills leading to new and enhanced opportunities for graduates. In these economically challenging times, we need to utilize all workforce resources available to help address these employment and training needs.

WorkFast programs offer a variety of choices for individuals who want to build entry-level skills or want to upgrade current skills.

To make the most of available resources, laid-off workers should contact their local Minnesota Workforce Center to determine whether they qualify as a dislocated worker and to find out if there are training funds available.

Following are a sampling of WorkFast programs available. Workforce counselors should contact CTS directly if they are interested in putting a cohort together in a WorkFast program. In the past, we’ve offered CNC Machinist, Swiss Machinist, SolidWorks, Welding MIG and TIG, Medical Device, and Microsoft Applications.

To Protect and Serve Customer Service Skills for… Police, Fire, First Responders, Security Guards and EMS Professionals *POST Board CertifiedThe heroics, skill and bravery involved in dealing with an emergency are only a part of the story. The rest includes the loss, pain and trauma that most people experience anytime they are faced with trauma or loss. It’s true that people want well trained and highly skilled professionals to deal with the incredible challenges an emergency often creates.

But equally as important is to remember that a human being - under unbelievable emotional strain – may need something more. They often need to be comforted, assured, supported and understood as their resilience fades and despair settles in. Just as the skills required to deal with an emergency are learned and practiced, the skills to provide impeccable service must be learned and practiced, as well. In this seminar, written specifically for peace officers, fire fighters, emergency professionals and first responders, you will learn:• Why service skills are as

important as technical skills• The impact of service on

your department’s community support

• How service affects morale and teamwork

• The 4 cornerstones of service and how to build on them

• How to communicate effectively and positively while under stress

• The importance of dealing with emotional behaviors effectively

• How to choose to perform and function at your best daily

How to Deal with Pets and Other Animals While Rescuing People – NEW!This isn’t about saving animals’ lives! It’s about removing the risks and barriers emotionally distraught animal owners can create in the middle of a crisis. As a firefighter, first responder, or police officer, your job is to save lives and be safe in the process.

But what happens when someone refuses help, risks their own safety or puts you in peril to save their pets or other animals they consider too valuable to lose? Animals are a key part of our culture and the human-animal bond is incredibly powerful. Moreover, animals (livestock) play significant roles in our health, nutrition and economy, especially here in Minnesota. The reality is that you will encounter animals in emergencies and disasters and because of this, you may face added health and safety risks. In addition, you may experience delayed response times when animals obstruct access, complicated evacuation and decontamination plans, increased incidence of re-entry into unstable environments and a public relations nightmare when animals aren’t dealt with humanely and compassionately. You will learn• To be safe on the job when

animals are encountered• How to help protect the health

and mental well being of families and our communities

• How to recognize the importance of dealing with animals in disasters and act on it with appropriate training and equipment

• To become a valuable EMAC resource when firefighters with animal handling skills are needed

“I am very hesitant to hire trainers outside of

Children's to present on topics related to

pediatric emergencies. Al [Benney] is a rare exception. He knows

his stuff. He is a very skilled presenter and I

never have to wonder if he really knows how to

teach pediatric skills. I've enjoyed working

with Al and wanted to pass along some of the

great feedback we've been receiving from your

simulation training. I have to stress that Al is

the biggest part of this. You could have all the

simulation technology in the world but without

the relevant experience and presentation style

Al brings to the training, it would not have the

same impact. I truly believe we are

improving provider skills in handling

pediatric patients as a result of these training

opportunities.”– Kristi Moline

In this seminar, written specifically for peace officers, fire fighters, emergency professionals and first responders, you will learn:• Why service skills are as

important as technical skills• The impact of service on your

department’s community support• How service affects morale and

teamwork• The 4 cornerstones of service

and how to build on them

• How to communicate effectively and positively while under stress

• The importance of dealing with emotional behaviors effectively

• How to choose to perform and function at your best daily

Front Desk Safety and Security – NEW!If you are at the entry or ‘front desk’ of a business of any kind, you need to know that safety and security begin with you. But what does that mean? Violence in the workplace is a serious safety and health issue. Its most extreme form, homicide, is the fourth-leading cause of fatal occupational injury in the United States. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI), there were 564 workplace homicides in 2005 in the United States, out of a total of 5,702 fatal work injuries. It was concluded that frontline/front desk staff are at risk to encounter

OSHA classification Type III violence in their daily tasks. Type III workplace violence consists of an assault by an individual who has some employment-related involvement with the organization or by a current or former employee, coworker, supervisor, former spouse or significant other or some other person who has a dispute involving the workplace or an employee. In this course, you will increase or establish your awareness of dangerous behavior patterns, critical emergency notification processes and de-escalation techniques that will help protect you from potentially fatal harm. You will learn:• 360 degrees of awareness • How to read visitors (screening) • How you are likely to respond in

Leaders in law enforcement, education and public safety joined Hennepin Technical College and Metropolitan State University in celebrating the October 7 open house at the new Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Education Center (LECJEC) at HTC’s Brooklyn Park campus. The Minnesota Law Enforcement Memorial Association conducted the first flag raising, followed by a program honoring officers who had died in the line of duty. A memorial wall with the names of all the officers who have died in the line of duty and were students at the colleges is prominently displayed in the main hallway.

The 67,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility, which opened for classes in August, is a regional resource for professional education and training, applied research and community partnership.

Highlights of the facility include tactical and fixed firing ranges, scenario-based training and simulation area, forensic lab and computer classrooms, outdoor tactical area, 12 “smart” or digital classrooms, and administrative and faculty offices. It will serve students pursuing associate, baccalaureate and graduate degrees, as well as professional development.

Through a partnership between Metropolitan State University, Minneapolis Community and Technical College and Hennepin Technical College, the center will offer collaborative programming for law enforcement, criminal justice, fire and first responder programs. In addition, the space will be used cooperatively by students in law enforcement and criminal justice programs at Century College, Inver Hills Community College, Minneapolis Community and Technical College, Normandale Community College, and North Hennepin Community College. Together, these partners reach the majority of students attending college in Minnesota in these fields of public safety and security.

“The enhanced training available at the center will have a significant and positive impact on public safety in Minnesota for years to come,” said Mylan Masson, LECJEC director.

Manufacturing and Quality Control

Supervising in a Manufacturing Environment8-part SeriesThe manufacturing industry frequently fills supervisory openings with the most highly-skilled employee, regardless of his/her supervisory skills, knowledge and abilities. This Manufacturing Supervisory Development Series delivers industry specific supervisory training. The program targets the skills manufacturing supervisors need to achieve higher levels of employee involvement and effectively deal with employment issues. This is not a “canned” supervisory/leadership program. We’ve stripped out the issues that don’t apply in a manufacturing setting, and topics not found in traditional supervisory / leadership courses have been added. Examples, case studies, class discussions and materials will reflect the supervisory role in the manufacturing environment. You will learn:• Guiding Principles for

Customer Service for Manufacturing CompaniesThis program partners with any quality program – Six Sigma, Lean, etc. – to provide a complete approach to organizational success. It addresses the human side of manufacturing. While quality addresses the processes and function of production, this program

addresses the relationships between departments, coworkers, suppliers and customers. Its purpose is to build successful work relationships to improve productivity, cooperation, collaboration, and retention. It’s not easy to address relationship issues inside a fast-paced plant or on the manufacturing floor. But manufacturing employees are dedicated to their jobs not because of the machines they operate or even their pay. Like most people in the workplace, they love or hate their job because of their day-to-day interactions with others. This program is about creating an environment where people are willing to work together as effectively and efficiently as the machines they operate. 0.35 CEU 001705: M, February 218:30 am – Noon Brooklyn Park001706: F, April 8 8:30 am – Noon Eden PrairieLitt (Manufacturing Training Expert; Professional Development Expert1 session, $49
