DEEP within Australia’s most secure researchlaboratory, a scientist inspects a vial contain-ing one of the world’s deadliest viruses.

It holds only 20ml of liquid, but each dropcontains millions of live Hendra virus particles– enough to kill every man, woman and childin Queensland.

Scientists at the Australian Animal Health

Laboratory are desperately trying to unlockthe secrets behind the worst Hendra outbreakon record. So far Hendra has killed 13 horsesand more than 60 people have been exposed.

The scientists, who want to fast-track avaccine for horses, are researching a worst-case scenario of the virus passing directly frombat-to-human or human-to-human.
