It is incumbent upon us to strengthen our commitment to obtaining diversity. I want you to hire diversity. I want you to think outside the normal box. Think of your talents, and think of the other talents we need on your teams. What would make the perfect team? Find those people that will make your team great. We are willing to provide you with those needs. You must voice them, however, in order for us to know what those needs may be. The importance of fostering diversity is upon us. We must be the ones that commit first. Without our commitment this is just a new program that goes no where. There are no silly questions, and in order for us to achieve this goal we must ask ourselves difficult questions. We need a group that is strong all the way around, and that begins with us knowing our strengths and also our weaknesses. Keep your head up always, and remember… We’ve got this!

Our goal is to create an environment of diversity. We want to do so because diversity opens our business to many more opportunities. We are proud of all of you and your adaptations to these changes, which I know have been difficult. However, I do believe the reward will be great when we see what your hard work will turn into. We cannot accomplish this goal with out you.

We are at a point where we need to realize that diversity is created through this group. You have been selected for a reason, and we know what you are capable of. Show everyone how much you have learned in the diversity training programs, and be the voice for our organization to our employees. It starts with us; we lead right, and the teams will follow.

Dr. Shelia ScottChief Executive OfficerTexas Tech UniversityPO Box 41240Lubbock, TX 79409

Dear Dr. Scott:

I am writing to you about the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in the hope that you will apply for this certification. ISO originated in Geneva, and has 100 different countries worldwide using this system of industrial commercial standards.

The word “isos” is derived from Greek, meaning “equal.” This is the mindset behind the ISO 9000. The goal is to create equality with all of the world’s standard of excellence in the hospitality industry. The ISO 9000 consists of twenty clauses that discuss in detail the requests for ISO certification. The certification is achieved through an outside body that examines the management responsibilities and qualities system.

We would need to write a step-by-step guide for complying with the standards of ISO. It is a very involved process and would take time to complete. The advantage of becoming ISO certified would be to gain favorable publicity and positive changes in operational factors, staff turnover, and customer satisfaction. Many companies that have applied for this certification have seen significant improvements in their business. The disadvantage is that the process is time consuming and expensive. The cost range could be anywhere from $15,000-$150,000 per site.

I think this certification could be good for our hotel because we need the accountability that this system provides. It assures our staff and customers of a job well done, and that we are willing to go above and beyond to be the best we can be.

Thank you for your time and consideration as to the ISO 9000 certification. It has clear advantages, but the expense and time are also disadvantages. If you need any further information from me please let me know.

Sincerely, JACOB HENDERSON

SUBJECT: Effective Communication Barriers: Status and Personality Conflict

Good Morning,

I hope that everyone is doing well this morning. It has come to my attention that we need to discuss our communication with one another. It is of great importance that you realize right now that your voice is very important to this organization. You are a vital piece to this organization no matter your status or personality. You were chosen to be part of this team, and we are honored to work side-by-side with you.

With the aforementioned established, it has come to my attention that some barriers in our communication have arrived. To clearly state again, we are all valuable members of this organization. I do not care if you are at the bottom of the pay scale or the top. We will conduct ourselves with respect to one another no matter our status. Just because one of you has more tenure or status with this organization does not make you a better person. We need each other, and we need to work together. To ensure both sides are represented, I also do not like that we are acting like others are different because they have been here longer or receive more pay than you. Please respect one another.

I am thrilled with the diversity that we have in this organization. I think it is a great reason why we are so successful. With the diversity, we also have some personality conflicts with one another. Please be respectful to each other. You were each chosen to work with us for a reason, and we want you to take that with you wherever you go in this business. We need each of you, and we have you here to make a difference. Please understand that each of us has our own unique personality. We want to embrace our personalities, not disrupt them.

We are a very unique group, and I love it. Please be kind and respectful to each other. If you have a doubt whether you are being disrespectful or not, just ask yourself if you would appreciate it if someone reciprocated the same treatment.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I am aware of the issue and we will be dealing with it accordingly. Please let me know what you are thinking regarding these issues. You are vital to our success, and thank you for being part of our team. If you have any questions regarding these issues please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,JACOB HENDERSON
