stephen J. edmonds

What was your educational and professional background before joining hempel? i had a secondary school education, after leaving school i enrolled as an apprentice saw Doctor, i did 3 years of a 5 year apprenticeship, had to move location and decided to try my hand at the blasting and painting industry in 1975, first job being a blaster and after a few years went on to being a sprayer, spent many years working offshore and then in 1986 was offered a position in saudi arabia in a paints company.

how long have you been with hempel and what is the scope of your activities at hempel? i have been with Hempel the best part of 20 years, i joined Hempel in march 1990 and went to Kuwait in July 1990 and a week later the iraqi army invaded the country so my future with Hempel was put on hold.after the oil well fires were extinguished i returned to Kuwait and spent 7 very fruitful years, in 1997 i then returned to the uK for personal reasons and after a short break from Hempel returned to work in abu Dhabi as a coating advisor, in 2003 was offered the opportunity to move to the sultanate of oman as country manager this was a very challenging role as sales needed to be improved, this was achieved in the 4 years my family and i lived there. i returned to the uK in January 2007 and took up a role in Hempel uK as technical projects manager, and now the technical

service manager, in January 2012 i will take up a position within the uK marine Division.

Please describe your involvement in one or two projects at hempel that you found especially interesting or fulfilling.

the most fulfilling project is the swire ac-count, all of the work i do with the tsD team is exciting and at times very fulfilling.

What are the important values that guide you in your (i) working and (ii) private life?Hard work and honesty, it's always important to keep focused on the task at hand, working with a dedicated team always makes these tasks easier to carry out.

What kind of personal qualities are necessary to do your job well? the ability to listen to what the customer wants and understand their needs. at times we all think we know whats best but to understand the situation can often dictate the correct solution.a

stephen, can you give us some details about the swire contract and its impact on hempel uK? the paint system itself is designed to be applied in the shortest possible time, we were

tasked with 3 coats in a usual 10 hour working day. We decided after a lot of discussions with the client to go for the following.

hemPadur ZInc 17630 (50 microns)hemPadur Fast dry 15560 (100 microns)hemPels Pro acrylIc 55880 (50 microns)

the colours used all have to be lead free and isocyanate free. We have just completed tri-als and are looking at changing to hemPadur 17410 and hemPathane hs 55610 to give even greater durability of the system.

Dear customers and business partners

now winter is here – the season when all Hempel’s work over the year is put to the test. after all, that’s one of the reasons why you buy our products, to protect all sorts of structures against the very worst kind of wea-ther and keep them looking good

colour is also a big part of Hempel’s busi-ness, so as i look around and see the vibrant images of a clear, winters day i think about the fantastic range of colours available from our multi tint range of products.

a new addition to this range is our HempatHa-ne Hs 55613, a voc-compliant, high-build finishing topcoat with fast-dry organic com-

pounds –this coating is now available in thou-sands of new colours … thanks to our revolutio-nary multi-tint colouring system (see page 8).

as you’ll read in this edition of our newsletter, the outlook for Hempel at the moment is just as impressive as our multi tint system.

for example? Well, in June, we acquired crown paints, the second-largest decorative coatings manufacturer in the uK and ireland this marks an important step in our global expansion drive. read all about it on page 4.

on page 10, we focus on our growing co-ope-ration with mabey bridge, the uK’s newest domestic producer of wind turbine towers.

and in spain, as you can learn on page 5, our research and Development team has turned its attention to producing new and better fire protective coating solutions.

but to start with, please allow me to intro-duce stephen edmonds. a solid, no-nonsen-se kind of guy with immense knowledge and experience, steve has been our technical service manager for several years but will now move into our marine sales team, he embodies the kind of values and expertise that both our marine team & technical ser-vice team provides. You can find an interview with him on the facing page.

hard work and honesty. It‘s always important to keep focused on the task at hand, but working with a dedicated team always makes these tasks easier to carry out.

TOPIC | Crown paints

an excellent match– hempel acquires crown Paints

in June we took a great step closer to that goal with the acquisition of crown paints, which is the second-largest decorative coatings manufacturer in the uK and ire-land. the uK-based company serves every sector of the decorative coatings segment – an area which represents a significant part of the global coatings industry and which is expected to keep growing.

“crown paints represents everything we were looking for. it has a solid position in the mar-ket, a sound financial situation as well as innovative r&D and marketing,” Hempel’s ceo pierre-Yves Jullien explains, adding: “the acquisition will not change crown paints’ brands’ identities, and the daily management and decision power will also remain local.”

Crown paints: who are they? crown paints has been making paint for 200 years. over 1,400 employees work for the com-pany, which is based in Darwen in lancashire. it has manufacturing sites in Darwen and Hull and distribution centres in Darwen and Dublin.the company’s products are available through its own network of 133 crown Decorating cen-tres, a network of independent merchants, and on the shelves of major multiple and indepen-dent retailers throughout the uK and ireland.

furthermore, through its groundbreaking scheme, launched in 2011, crown paints is able to measure the carbon footprint of all of its products. the company has also committed to significant sustainability targets and its work in

this field has been recognised at several regio-nal and national awards.

Hempel expands its r&D centre in spain with the new state-of-the-art laboratory fo-cused on high performing fire protective coating solutions - intumescent coatings.

passive fire protection that lengthens the time a steel structure will remain intact dur-ing a fire – provide longer evacuation times and allow emergency per-sonnel more time to respond. that

means that these advanced coating solu-tions not only help protect investments, but can potentially save lives.

naturally, as global awareness of intumes-cents has grown, demand has increased. Worldwide, customers are requesting high quality coating systems for fire protection. With the expansion of the state-of-the-art

r&D centre in spain, Hempel now has the opportunity to better serve these

customers with a more complete pro-tective system.

“along with a state-of-the-art facility, we have also estab-

lished a team with years of experience in intumes-

cent product develop-ment,” says Hempel

project manager lars risum. “the key fo-cus of the new team is to develop a range of highly competitive intumescent coatings and protective systems to give our custom-ers more integrated solutions.”

the new fire protection laboratory includes an advanced testing area with furnaces, pilot manufacturing and application in an impressive 1000 m2 area.

„With the new r&D facility and dedicated team, we have overcome many of the chal-lenges in developing an intumescent prod-uct range,” lars risum says. “We now look forward to bringing these important prod-ucts to market and providing even greater value to our customers.

We’ve come a long way since launching one hempel – one ambition in december of last year. so far, we are making great progress on our strategy, which united the hempel Group with a single, common goal: to build our business in three core seg-ments – decorative, Protective and marine – to become one of the world’s top ten coatings suppliers by 2015.

Global engineering giant siemens signed up for hempel’s technical services europe in 2008. Project engineer mario leitsch explains his management deci-sion, and why it was a very good move.

TOPIC| Interview with Siemens

siemens salutes hempel’s technical services europe

hempel is known for protective coa-tings. however, siemens has also been utilising hempel‘s technical services europe for three years and has a long term contract for it. What kind of ser-vices does the contract include?

expediting and full-time supervision of coating works on our construction sites or in our manufacturing plants (for example, supervising the internal coating of cooling water pipes and water tanks).

What are the main benefits and added value of hempel´s technical services europe for siemens?

Well, the first thing is that we are a world-wide firm and Hempel´s technical servic-

es europe is available nearly all over the world, so that in itself is a big plus. What’s more, Hempel is very flexible and speedy in meeting our demands, wherever they arise – Hempel’s ability to react quickly is a key point for us. but over and above that, using Hempel´s technical services europe means that we can be certain that the quality of the finished coated product will comply with the original specifications and product data sheets. We also value the fact that Hempel is ready to train and supervise all unskilled painters and applicators. this further en-sures the quality of coating application, es-pecially in countries outside of eu.

there must be a number of companies offering a similar kind of service. What made you opt for hempel?

an umbrella agreement had already been in place between Hempel and siemens since 1998. this umbrella agreement cov-ered coating supplies & service. the high level of service that we enjoyed over this long period convinced us to sign a techni-cal service contract for full-time supervi-sion and expediting.

can you name and describe some examples of hempel specialists hel-ping you to avoid serious problems related to the coating process?

Well, all i can say is that serious disasters don’t happen anymore. that’s because skilled supervisors (e.g. provided also by Hempel) eliminate such disasters before they happen and so minimise delays and

unforeseen expenses. in addition, long-term spending on subsequent mainte-nance is also – logically far less than it otherwise would have been.

Finally, would you recommend hempel´s technical services europe to other companies? If so, why?

i would recommend them unhesitatingly. Why? for the well trained supervisors. for their extremely high reporting standards. and for the highly organised way they per-form their duties both within Hempel and when working with us.

hemPel in united Kingdom Brussels says no to tougher Vocs regulation hemPathane 55613 - now available in multi-tint

the european commission has decided not to strengthen measures aimed at re-ducing emissions of volatile organic com-pounds (vocs).

the commission’s 1999 solvent emissi-on Directive (seD) set emissions limits for vocs used in shop installations.

now, after a three-year review, the com-mission has rejected proposals to widen the scope of the directive and tighten voc limits even further.

such a move “is not justified at this stage” as it would be too expensive and difficult to administer, the commission report said.

the paint and ink industry body cepe prai-sed the decision, saying that broadening the range of regulated products would compro-mise quality and create “disproportionate socio-economic costs”.

hempel helps clients meet emissi-ons limits

in the meantime, Hempel through its new “voc report” initiative remains ready to as-sist its clients in complying with those emis-sions regulations that are already in place.

each voc report lists all Hempel products purchased by a client within a given period (together with the number of litres and voc grams per kg paint).

the initiative is aimed particularly at those clients who must observe the limits laid down by the seD.

paint applicators subject to the seD (i.e. those emitting more than 5 tonnes of vocs annually) are encouraged to develop “sol-vent management plans”. With its straight-forward structure and precise information, the voc report can be a key tool in formula-ting such a plan.

the seD allows applicators flexibility in how they manage their voc emissions. for exam-ple, they may use combinations of paints con-taining high and low levels of vocs.

Where steelwork needs to be protected from a corrosive atmosphere, heavy-duty corrosion protection is obviously required. the polyurethane HempatHane Hs 55613 offers an uncompromising level of protec-tion for structural steel in corrosive envi-ronments.

HempatHane Hs 55613 is a two-compo-nent semi-gloss with good colour retenti-on, which may be specified as a one-coat “direct-to-metal” system in environments classified as c2 and c3. as a voc-compli-ant, high-build finishing coat, it complies with environmental regulations such as the solvent emissions Directive (seD).

but for some projects, the quality of coa-ting is not the only consideration colour is almost as important, because it is used to convey a desired mood, tone or even cor-porate image.

thanks to our revolutionary multi-tint co-louring system, HempatHane Hs 55613 is available in thousands of different co-lours. multi-tint produces HempatHane Hs 55613 in precisely the shade you want. We can draw up specifications that meet your individual project requirements. You should bear in mind, however, that in ac-cordance with Hempel policy HempatHa-

ne Hs 55613 is only offered as a “lead-free” product in all shades when supplied within the multi-tint system.

there are five bases available suitable for creating shades that comply with colour systems such as ral, bs or ncs. the co-lour you choose can then be “saved” and replicated exactly for future projects else-where, as many times as you want, and with perfect batch-to-batch consistency (including opacity).

this allows you to buy with confidence: the colour you want is the colour you get.

mabey Bridge, uK

hempel supports alternative energy

hempel teams up with Britain’s biggest wind turbine manufacturerIn october 2011 mabey Bridge signed a contract with hempel uK for the supplies of Protective coating systems for wind turbine towers.

the new contract assures Hempel the position of sole supplier for a minimum of one year with the opportunity to extend if all goes well, the amount of paint supplied is expected to reach 100.000 litres.

Hempel were already supplying the new factory with product but had to tender against several other paint suppliers for the supply of the coat-ings, so to win the contract and have the busi-ness secured is a great achievement. Hempel has the position of number one sup-plier for the wind turbine towers, and thanks to a wide range of proven products, Hempel is one of only a few suppliers specified by all tower manufacturers.

mabey bridge is one of the biggest uK’s steel fabricators for steel bridges, car parks, heavy plated steelwork and wind turbine towers. they have three automated manufacturing facilities

with a combined annual production capacity ap-proaching 100,000 tonnes, and in addition to the wind tower side of the business Hempel uK have also secured the sole supply of coatings to the bridge and industrial business.

the collaboration between mabey bridge and Hempel in the field of wind turbine towers started 18 months ago and further strengthened when mabey bridge opened a new £38 million facility for the production of wind turbine towers in south Wales in may 2011. the factory is located at ne-whouse farm Distribution park near chepstow and was specifically designed for the efficient manufacture of wind turbine towers to the high-est quality standards using the latest manufac-turing techniques, including computer-controlled cutting and rolling, robotic welding and fully envi-ronmentally-controlled protective treatment cells. it is capable of producing up to 300 wind turbine towers annually.

as a part of the contract between mabey bridge and Hempel, the wind turbine tow-ers for marr Wind farm are also coated with Hempel’s anticorrosive system.

a voc compliant proven system was select-ed for this particular project. it consists of HempaDur Zinc 17360, a long-term primer for highly weather-resistant coating systems in severely corrosive environments, Hempa-Dur 47140 epoxy midcoat featuring short drying time and providing for a reliable pro-tection in a severely corrosive atmospheric environment and HempatHane Hs 55610

topcoat, which guarantees high gloss and colour retention thus assuring a good long lasting appearance.

the system is designed to meet most strict requirements of iso 12944 High Durability. it typically lasts 25 years which saves potential costs of maintenance on site.

the first twelve completed tower sections for onshore wind turbines have left mabey’s manufacturing facility to the marr Wind farm near Doncaster in south Yorkshire, which is being built by re power.

the sections were coated with a combination of hemPadur ZInc 17360 (a zinc-rich epoxy primer which offers cathodic protection from local mechanical damage) and hemPadur 47140 (a high-build epoxy paint that

combines a relatively high volume solids content with a short drying time).

the topcoat – as recommended by our technical service experts - was the high-build hemPathane hs 55610.

TOPIC | Corporate Social Responsibility, Technical Seminars

hempel’s commitment to corporate social responsibility

Do you want to know how Hempel has stayed ahead of the worldwide competition for so long?

Well, one reason is the importance we give to training and education … not only for the people who make and sell our products, but also for those who buy and use them.for many years, Hempel has run courses for its existing and potential customers on the lat-est advances in paints and related subjects. this year saw Hempel unveil a series of edu-cational technical seminars aimed at provid-ing professionals in the protective segment with technical support and information on key factors influencing coating specifications and requirements. the goal of the courses on “cost-effective coating solutions and paint system specifi-

cations” is to familiarise Hempel clients with Hempel’s products and services. the first of the sessions – held in budapest in June attracted around 80 protective seg-ment professionals, such as technologists, project managers from steel construction and application companies, and architects from design offices.

topics covered included: technical support and information on key factors influencing coating specifications and requirements; technical standards on corrosion in the paint industry; and how to achieve optimum condi-tions for the transport and storage of paints. attendees also had a chance to broaden their knowledge of working with Hempel‘s systems and to learn how to keep their own

projects in compliance with the international iso 12944 standards governing corrosion protection of steel structures by protective paint systems. since the enthusiastically-received debut tech-nical seminar in Hungary, Hempel has rolled out the courses in poland, turkey and spain.

topics covered in the technical seminars:• general information about Hempel • new effective coatings solutions• choosing the right coating system • examples of systems• Designing coating systems that comply with iso 12944 standards• useful information about anti-corrosion protection

J.c Hempel, the founder of the Hempel compa-ny, believed that a company has a responsibility … not only to its employees and shareholders, but also to the society in which it operates. this principle forms the basis of our corporate and social responsibility (csr) work today. We be-lieve that we have a responsibility to help society and people in need in the countries where we operate – and it remains one of our goals to en-hance life quality for people around the world.

education of children in needpoverty is one of the great challenges in the world today. the most effective tool for helping to break the poverty circle is education. even so, more than 72 million children in the world do not attend school and 350 million children receive education of only a very poor quality. Hempel has chosen education of children in need as a focus area for our csr efforts.

hempel’s schools Projects in mozambiquemozambique is one of the countries in which we have chosen to concentrate our csr work. Hempel is providing support to two schools (each with 700 children) in alto molócué, the country’s poorest region. the schools were in a very poor condition, with classes of more

than 80 pupils, a lack of teaching materials, and poorly trained teachers. absenteeism among the children was high.

hempel Volunteers in alto molócuéthis year, Hempel ceo pierre Yves Jullien has given six Hempel employees the chance to join the project and work as volunteers in alto molócué for a week.the volunteer trip included teaching the children life skills such as knitting, sewing, gardening and carpentry. We asked two of our volunteers for their im-pressions and experience from mozambique:

eduard Garcia, from Spain: coating advisor based in Brisbane, australia

i was amazed by how dedicated both teachers and pupils are to the important task of teaching/learning, despite the limited means at their disposal. i witnessed for myself how Hempel’s support really makes for an improvement in the quality of those resources and therefore the kids’ education. from a personal point of view,

i needed this experience to demonstrate to myself how fortunate i am not to have to struggle every day for food or to secure proper shelter.

maria lança, from Portugal: Back-office assistant in the deco retail department at hemPel

During my week in alto molócué, i did feel that i had “made a difference”, because i tried to give the teachers, students and families we visited my care and attention, my smiles and my hugs. i loved singing and dancing with them, and teaching some of the children new skills. but, of course, i know there is much more to be done not only over the course of a week but every day of their lives.

TOPIC | Mabey bridge, Marr Wind Farm - UK

new orders are flooding into mabey bridge’s Wales site. last year, for example, it secured a preferred supplier agreement with repower, one of the uK’s biggest suppliers of wind tur-bines, each completed tower is made up of three sections and weighs 150 tonnes.and in september 2011, mabey bridge an-nounced that its 32,000-square-metre chep-stow facility had secured another major contract to supply wind turbine towers to the Dutch wind turbine company eWt. the five-year framework agreement will see the firm producing steel tu-bular towers measuring from 40 to 75 metres in height.

thumbs up for new technical seminars
