THE KARNATAKA MOUNTAINEERING ASSOCIATION ®

Rupshu is a region in the Ladakh valley. Ladakh, lying in the far Eastern corner of Kashmir

is India’s most remote and sparsely populated region. A high altitude snow desert, cradled

by the Karakoram and the great Himalayan ranges, Ladakh is the geological boundary

between the vast Tibetan plateau and the Himalayas. The area known as the ‘Moonland’,

‘Little Tibet’ or the ‘Shangri La’ is the most remote and the barren part of India. A virtually

rainless area, only rivers originating from far off glaciers bring water to the few inhabited

areas. It is only in these areas, that some plant life and fertile irrigated patches of lush green

oasis can be found, amid beautiful and picturesque landscape of shimmering desolate grey

brown hills and plains. Rupshu lies at the eastern end of the valley between Zanskar and the

Tibetan border. Rupshu is the highest and the least trodden area of Ladakh. Rupshu is

physically a part of the Changthang plateau extending from Tibet. Consisting of a network

of high valleys separated by ridges and passes with snow capped peaks soaring above 6000

mts, Rupshu is a rugged land inhabited by the cheerful nomadic people known as the

Changpas. The trek route takes you through the heart of unspoiled Rupshu. Crossing over 4

high passes, all above 16500’ – each affording splendid views across majestic plateaus ,

distant snow peaks, lovely high meadows, shining campsites, isolated settlements,

fascinating encounters with the nomadic Changpas and their black tented encampments,

makes this undoubtedly a trek to cherish. Marmots, blue sheep, Ibex, Snow cock, Snow

leopard, Golden eagle, Partridge & bearded vulture are some of the wild life that you could

encounter.
