What is a New Years Resolution?By Hanna Reitz

A lot of people ask, “What is a New Year’s resolution?” Here’s your answer: a New Year’s resolution is a

tradition in which someone makes a promise to themselves to do an act of self improvement from the beginning of the new year. I asked students what their New Year’s resolution was for 2015. An anonymous student here at Hemet High said her new years resolution was to be nicer!

Also Amanda Stewart (junior) said hers was to stop eating so much Chipotle!!

Good luck with that girls! Whatever your New Years resolution is, make sure you work hard and always

try to better yourself in whatever you do. Be kind and make lots of memories!

Snowing, Here?By Madison Loomis

Hopefully our winter break doesn’t seem like it was too long ago, but if you recall the last day of 2014

brought us a special surprise. Snowfall left western Riverside County and San Diego valleys with great excitement.

Snowmen, snowball fights, or just admiring the beautiful white coat among this part of

California was something we don’t see. Of course, we can drive up to Big Bear, Mammoth, Idyllwild, etc., but to have it brought to us was amazing!

Some may say that they live in our area for the wonderful warmer weather year around, but this only

happens a certain amount of times in our lifetime! It almost gives us hope that global warming won’t destroy our world.

So the next time we

are hit with the unexpected, go experience and enjoy it. Yeah, sure you will get a lot of it through social media, but it is not the same as in person!

Could You Live in a Tiny House?By Nicole Vorisek

There’s a new trend arising, tiny homes, literally! Homes that are 100-400 sq. feet that are usually

mobile, most of these are smaller than a bedroom. Not like mobile homes though, these look like tiny homes; not fiber-glass things rolling down the road. Also known as the Small House Movement, the tiny homes provide affordable housing and it’s eco-friendly. Who doesn’t like saving the planet? Do you think you’d be able to live

inside a tiny home though? Of course you can! There’s a d o c u m e n t a r y called Tiny: A Story About Living Small, that shows

exactly what it’s like to live in a small home. Would you join the small house movement, or stick to a normal size home?

Page 3Last Semester!By Shayla Evans

Alright guys, we got through the first semester, now we’re on the running stretch home! For freshmen,

sophomores, and juniors this is just another semester to plow through and make it to summer break. For seniors…this is another matter entirely, and you really don’t feel it until you’re receiving those college admissions, making the final decisions to join the military, or even going to job interviews.

Whether you’re staying in town or leaving after high school, this is definitely going to be a

huge change in our lives. Graduation is so exciting, but I’m willing to bet a lot of us will feel a tiny amount of remorse at the thought of leaving Hemet High and our friends that we get to see everyday. Then there’s the other section of seniors who are totally ready to leave and begin the next step in their lives.

Finally, all our hard work and dedication is culminating together, resulting in the slip of paper

that will prove our worth to the rest of the w o r l d - o u r diploma. As tempting as it is, don’t blow it. You’re more than three quarters of the way

there, you just need this last semester. Ditching class, getting into stupid little fights with other students, or even refusing to do homework, are not the way to go!

This last semester is going to go by a LOT faster than the first one, so don’t be too surprised when

May shows up out of nowhere. Just remember to keep your grades up and stay on track to graduate out of here.

The InterviewBy Nicole Vorisek

After the whole controversy ordeal of the movie, The Interview, has been released. Take that, North

Korean censorship. Did you really doubt you would get a chance to see it? Commerce always wins! Starring Seth Rogan, James Franco, Lizzy Caplan, Randall Park, and Diana Bank. Putting Seth Rogan and James Franco together is never a bad idea.

What was the whole

fuss about, though? Was it because it’s about lightweight TV journalists who score an interview with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and then accept a CIA assignment to kill him? Was it all the satire, butt-jokes and shenanigans, or was it just the way they nail modern North Korea?

The movie’s opening scene is in front of the monument to the

Workers’ Party in Pyongyang, where a little girl is singing “Die America!” where a missile then launches off. This reflects anti-American propaganda perfectly. The movie is obviously banned in North Korea, just like any movie made outside of North Korea. Although a Seoul-based human rights group has been dropping hundreds and thousands of DVD copies of The Interview, along with thumb drives with copies of the movie as well into North Korea. South Korea is really taking the piss here. Spoiler alert, when Dave Skylark finds out the grocery store was fake, he realizes he was being deceived and lied to. The grapefruit was fake. Poor guy was honey-potted. This shows the contrast between what foreigners are shown, and the reality of North Korea.

After the hype from Sony saying they won’t release The Interview, but then releasing it for online

download anyway- Sony made a record breaking $15 million in movie downloads in just four days of its release. So go watch The Interview, it’s available for download all over the Internet.

Page 4Page 4Super Bowl Sunday

By Hanna Reitz

Super Bowl Sunday is coming up soon... February 1, 2015!

The super bowl is a national game day in which the two best teams in the NFL (National Football League)

have made it out of the playoffs and go head-to-head to fight for the title to be the Super Bowl Champs. Here is some history about the Super Bowl: The first Super Bowl was January 15, 1967 in Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California when the Green Bay Packers won 35-10 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Last year in Super Bowl XLVIII, the

Seattle Seahawks won over the Denver Broncos 48-8. This year we have asked students and teacher who they want to go into the Super Bowl and come out with a win. Mr. Parker said he is rooting for the San Diego Chargers to win the Superbowl this year. Good luck with that Mr. Parker! Camryn Bootsma, a student here says isn’t sure who will make it, but she thinks the Buffalo Bills will win it all. Make sure you turn in to watch Super Bowl XLIX this year on Fox.

MLK DayBy Madison Loomis

Many of us were not looking forward to coming back to school Monday the 5th and are curious

when the next break is. Martin Luther King Day was a nice refreshing day off, but sometimes you have to think why do we get Martin Luther King Day, off?

The third Monday in January is reserved for us

Americans to celebrate the equality among all races. This holiday is s p e c i f i c a l l y reserved in all 50 states thanks to the courage, sacrifice, and determination of Martin Luther King, Jr. With the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), King led an unsuccessful struggle against segregation in Albany, Georgia, in 1962, and organized nonviolent protests in Birmingham, Alabama, that attracted national attention following television news coverage of the brutal police response. This was the major aspect to Kings start of peace throughout all citizens.

On October 14, 1964 Martin Luther King Jr. received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating

racial inequality through nonviolence. Imagine our world if not only King, but all of his supporters hadn’t have pursued this ultimate goal.

Ma r t i n L u t h e r

King’s birthday was January 15, 1929. Being that the days are constantly shifting

one day ahead yearly, we celebrate his success on the third Monday of every January. Remember to acknowledge why we celebrate what we celebrate. To also understand the background of holidays and appreciate what our past has done to make our world the way it is today. I hope you had a thankful and relaxing MLK Day!

Golden Globes 2015By Hanna Reitz and Ruth Gonzalez

Hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Pohler for the last time, and giving the audience lots of laughs (as

well as the viewers at home) the Golden Globes have been a major success this 2015, with a total of 19.5 million viewers. The Golden Globes are awards given by the Hollywood Foreign Press association, presented annually for outstanding achievement in film and television. Many great actors and actresses like Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, Keira Knightley, Jake Gyllenhaal, Steve Carell, and many others were nominated for best actor or actress in a Drama Picture. The winner for Best Drama Motion Picture was the movie Boyhood. The Movie Boyhood took 12 years to film capturing the essence of a small child all the way from his “boyhood” to “adulthood”. It’s incredible to see a person move to a different stage of life within a 2 hour capsule. Next to this nomination were movies like Foxcatcher, The Imitation Game, Selma, and The Theory of Everything.

Actor George Clooney was awarded with the Cecil B. DeMille Award, celebrating his outstanding

career and great films he is recognized for. It’s something fun and family friendly for everyone to tune into. If you missed this awesome Award show, don’t worry, because the 87th Academy Awards will take place February 22nd, 2015.

Is it sad that all of the top 10 highest grossing movies of 2014 are either sequels or have originated from other

ideas? All of the super hero movies including Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and even Big Hero 6 are all original comic books from Marvel. Meanwhile, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 1, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies are all sequels. Maleficent is an adaption of the story Sleeping Beauty, and The Lego Movie, of course, emerged from Lego toys.

What does it say about us when the records show we all go to see these reruns? We know the stories, yet

we can’t wait for the opening day. Guardians of the Galaxy, as number one, was a highly anticipated movie earning $333,055,258 overall. Though it was already a comic book, it’s been said the film’s success lies in its nostalgic soundtrack, light-hearted humor, and the performance of the cast. A sequel has been scheduled to release on May 5, 2017. Even though the Marvel enthusiasts knew the story, it had never been made into a movie, so most of us didn’t know what it was about and had to go see it.

On the flip side, Transformers: Age of Extinction, in the time it was in theatres, earned $245,439,076 and

the fifth place on the list, which is surprising because it is the fourth film in the series. Also, upon its release, the movie received mostly negative review among film critics.

And so, it should come with no

surprise that the list for the most anticipated movies of 2015 is mostly composed of sequels. It’s just what we like to watch, and it’s proven when these films

end up making millions of dollars. What are you most excited for?

Page 6Spring Musical CancelledBy Shayla Evans

This year, the theatre department was forced with a tough financial decision concerning the spring

musical, The Sound of Music. On the second day of auditions, Mr. Cherland delivered the news no theatre kid ever wants to hear. Due to possible complications in the month of February, the play was cancelled. Though it was very hard to accept at first, it became evident that the musical wasn’t worth the financial risks.

There had to be some sort of replacement however, something that wouldn’t jeopardize the department.

And so, Mr. Cherland announced All in the Timing, five one-act comedies that would be performed (hopefully) February 11th through the 13th. These skits don’t require an elaborate set, or as much rehearsal time and work as The Sound of Music would’ve needed.

Auditions for these shows took place the week we got back from Winter Break, and so they are now casted

and in full rehearsal mode after school. There are really only four weeks total until the production is supposed to go up, a challenge I’ve never really seen taken before at Hemet High. Granted, these are smaller plays, but if it’s to have the quality that this theatre department usually presents, a lot of work is going to have to go into it.

Mr. Cherland is directing three out of the five short plays. The first, The Universal Language is about

Dawn, a young woman with a stutter, and Don, the creator and teacher of Unamunda. He tries to con her into thinking it’s a real language, but in the end he realizes he actually likes her. Variations on the Death of Trotsky is another play that shows Trotsky, the Russian revolutionary and the different ways in which he could’ve died. And finally, Words, Words, Words is about three little monkeys in a cage.

Mr. West is also directing, Sure Thing follows two people in a café having a conversation that

constantly changes with the ringing of an offstage bell. In this hilarious and fast paced dialogue, the two end up falling for each other. Lastly, Mere Mortals is about three construction workers from New Jersey who have a fun talk during their lunch break.

New Semester! By Ruth Gonzalez

Welcome back bulldogs! I know we are all very excited to be back at school, and now we only

have one more semester left to go! The great thing is we have a fresh slate and we all start from zero again and have the opportunity to redeem ourselves from any mistakes we might have made last semester. Although maybe one of our New Year’s resolution to improve our grades and work ethic, sometimes our procrastination kicks in and we forget that our goals are indeed reachable. Remember that we always have tutoring after school in the library from 2:30- 5:00pm after school. Remember that you can do it! Work hard and improve yourself in school you can do it!!

Winter Formal, Fresh, or Bright Out?By Madison Loomis

Friday, January 23rd we are having a dance. “Winter Bright Out” is the theme as of right

now. There had been some confusion leading up into the dance regarding what type of dance it was and why they changed the name so many times.

The sophomore ASB class has been working really hard to advertise this dance and make it the

best possible! After discussing the theme, they came to conclusion that we don’t have enough “T-shirt” dances. So, the theme was changed to “Winter White Out.” The only issue with the theme was it’s not supposed to be just white under black out lights, but several colors. “Winter Bright Out” then seemed most suitable for the occasion. Neon, white, make it BRIGHT! Tickets went on sale as soon as possible, and are still available as late as at the door ticket buying. Prices are ranging from $15 to $20 pre pay and $30 to get your ticket at the door.

The dance is going to be full of life, color, and excitement. So, if you get the opportunity to go,

take it. At the door ticket buying is always better late than never! Have an awesome “Winter Bright Out” Bulldogs!

Top Songs of 2014By Ruth Gonzalez

Now that 2014 is sadly over, we can always just listen back to the music that brings back memories of an

amazing year! Out of all the songs we jammed out to, cried to and shared laughs to, we can simplify the list to the top 10 songs of 2014. These are the 10 best guilty pleasure pop songs of 2014 according to Alternative Press.

10. Meghan Trainor- “All about that Bass” This Retro, R&B, and catchy rhythm song exploded over summer making it a top hit instantly and was soon being played in various radio stations.

9. Nick Jonas- “Jealous” Another R&B hit this past year was Nick Jonas breakout single “Jealous”. This song is mostly responsible for shedding his Disney image with more provocative themes, after “The Jonas Brothers” decided to call it quits.

8. Ed Sheeran- “Sing” This brilliant pop song features amazing producer, Pharell Williams and anytime he works on anything with anyone it’s bound to be a hit, and it surely was. Not only was this song a hit but his entire Album, X has been positively acclaimed.

7. Sam Smith- “Stay With Me” Although Smith was first recognized for featuring in Disclosure’s song “Latch”, Smith is now one of the most recognized breakout stars for 2014, and has now sold millions of copies of his debut album, The Lonely Hour, including his gospel infused track, “Stay With Me”.

6.Iggy Azalea ft. Charli XCX – “Fancy” Let’s just say that “Fancy” is one of those really catchy songs you get stuck in your head all day and definitely put this Australian Rapper on the map.

4. Charli XCX – “Boom Clap” “Boom Clap” has been Charli’s biggest solo yet, which featured in the film, The Fault In Our Stars. This song accompanied with “I love It” and “Fancy”, two songs she featured in, has set the foundation for her to become a breakout star.

3. Clean Bandit – Rather Be Although this song has unexpectedly been a hit, it’s one of those songs that will always be around, maybe on your iPod but definitely in Coca-Cola commercials.

2. Ariana Grande ft. Iggy Azalea – “Problem”Speaking of insane breakout stars, former Nickelodeon star Ariana Grande has definitely made a drastic push this year. Without a doubt Ariana has an incredible voice making her probably one of the best vocalist this decade has to offer.

1.Taylor Swift – “Blank Space” Of course Swifty couldn’t be missing on our list, and admit it you knew this was coming! Taylor’s new album, 1989 has been her best selling album yet, and includes her already hits, “Shake it Off” and “Into the Woods”. She just keeps surprising us!
