Homework Questions What is the problem about? Even if you
don’t know how to solve a problem, listening to your child’s explanation will help you find a strategy.
What are you trying to do or find out? Is this like another problem that you
have worked on? What have you tried? What did you do
in class? Can you make a picture or a diagram?
Expectations
Expect that sometimes homework will be difficult
Expect some confusion or struggle-it’s part of learning new things
Expect that your child can succeed
Research suggests that an important difference between successfuland unsuccessful problem solvers lies in their beliefs
about problem solving, about themselves as problem solvers, and about ways to approach solving problems. For example,
many students have developed the faulty belief that allmathematics problems could be solved quickly and directly.
If they do not immediately know how to solve a problem, they will give up, which supports a view of themselves as
incompetent problem solvers. Furthermore, many studentsbelieve there is one “right” way to solve any mathematics
problem. Not only do these students become dependent onthe teacher or an answer key for verification of their solution,
but they also fail to appreciate the excitement and insightthat can come from recognizing and connecting very different
ways to solve a problem.Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, NCTM, 2000
Prince William County Mathematics Vision StatementPrince William County Schools’ mathematics program promotes an environment in which students develop a comprehensive and enduring understanding of the concepts of mathematics. Students learn to effectively apply these concepts and use a variety of problem solving strategies. The program nurtures a productive disposition toward mathematics, challenges all learners and supports further investigations in this field.
Visión del Programa de Matemáticas en el Condado de Prince William
