Through collective philanthropy, the Fundfor Women invests and advocates by bringingtogether our knowledge, passion, and commitment

to empower women and girls in Delaware to achieve their potential.In 1993 sixteen visionary women philanthropists were concerned about a lackof support for women and girls in poverty in Delaware. They researched thestatus of women and children in poverty and learned that services werelimited and underfunded. The group proceeded to gather a core of womenFounders and created the Fund for Women at the Delaware CommunityFoundation. The group's initial goal was 1,000 women contributing $1,000each to establish a $1 million endowment. Their goal was reached in 2009and now the Fund for Women (FFW) has far surpassed their goal with anendowment of over $3 million and over 1,600 “Founders.”From 1993-2012 Swingin' With a Star, a local women’s golf tournament,made the Fund for Women a beneficiary of their annual fundraiser. Thisprovided a critical financial foundation, and their contributions added over $1million to the endowment fund.The first grants, totaling $2,500, were distributed in 1994 to twoorganizations: Girls, Inc. and the University of Delaware. To date, we havedistributed over $2,300,000 in grants to more than 130 nonprofit organizationswith programs in Delaware.

Our Story

In 2005 FFW established the Driving Force Award to honor Founders who,through their actions, made major contributions to our growth. The firstDriving Force Award was awarded to the Swingin' With a Star board. TheDriving Force Award honoree is celebrated each year in May at the GrantsAward Event. In 2007 the Fund created the First Founder Award to honor awoman who has been an outstanding philanthropist in Delaware, and thisaward is presented at the annual fall breakfast. (See Driving Force Awardrecipients noted with ** and First Founder Award recipients noted with * inthe Founders List booklet).As the FFW grew, the organization actively worked to establish committees ineach of the three Delaware counties to ensure that the FFW reaches womenstatewide in both Founders and grant recipients. Each county maintains adevelopment committee responsible for growing the Founder base in theirarea. Sussex County, whose designated committee began in 2007, has hadparticular success with over 250 Founders, many learning about the Fund forWomen through an annual spring fashion show.Having met the original goal of 1,000 Founders in 2009, a new goal to addanother million dollars to the endowment began in 2010 called the “NextMillion” Campaign. As of February 2016, we are 3/4 of the way toward thatgoal. We are now striving for 2,018 total Founders by the year 2018 tocomplete this effort. The need in Delaware is still great. The Fund is unable toprovide grants to over 80% of the grant applicants each year. As theendowment grows, the amount available for these much-needed grants willcontinue to grow.The board of trustees of FFW held a strategic planning meeting in early 2015to visualize and shape the future for FFW. As a result, our mission and visionstatements were expanded to incorporate advocacy and volunteerism. It wasalso decided to take a closer look at our grants and endowment growth.In celebration of the success to date and the bright future, we held a statewideFund for Women Day on September 30, 2015, beginning with the AnnualFirst Founders Breakfast (New Castle County). The First Founders Awardhonoree at the breakfast was Delaware’s First Lady Carla Markell. Lunch waswith our legislators in Dover (Kent County), where Governor Jack Markellproclaimed September 30, Fund for Women Day in Delaware. The dayclimaxed with a Rehoboth cocktail reception (Sussex County). During thecourse of Fund for Women Day, we successfully recruited fifty new Foundersto join us in our worthwhile mission!The current Fund for Women board is excited to continue the journey ofharnessing the collective power of women's philanthropy set forth by the FirstFounders!
