Helping Rusty

Score a

25 Hall Visit Activity #1

Rusty has made it to the Hockey Hall of Fame and you are going to assist him in his quest to learn more about the game of hockey. These questions will test your observation skills. Every time you answer the question correctly, you help Rusty get closer to completing his goal. Good Luck! NHL Zone

NHL Zone ‘Milestones’ Display 1. One of the most significant milestones in a modern hockey player’s

career is recording 1000 career points. Canadian Gordie Howe was the first ever player to score 1000 points in his NHL career; Jari Kurri was the first player from Finland to do the same. Who was the first American-born player to reach this impressive milestone and in what season?

________________________________________________________

NHL Zone ‘Retro’ Display 2. Some NHL teams have been in the league for more than fifty years,

while others are not so lucky and don’t last long in the competitive hockey world. In 1930-31 the Philadelphia Quakers joined the NHL, how many seasons did they last in the league?

3. Wayne Gretzky is one of the best known hockey players of all time. He is often revered as hockey’s “Great One”. What item here represents his early beginnings in the game of hockey?

The Montreal Canadiens’ Dressing Room 4. As you walk into the Montreal Canadiens’ Dressing Room, many

players have been honoured on the wall by the team for their contribution to the game and induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame. How many of these portraits of the team’s greatest players can you count? _________________________________________________________

Panasonic Hometown Hockey 5. In the 1960’s, a new kind of hockey was invented for the physically

impaired in Sweden. A metal sled was modified to seat the player, and two regular size hockey skate blades were attached to the bottom of the sled so that pucks could pass underneath. Now the game is played internationally and is an official sport of the Paralympic Games. What is the name of this sport? _________________________________________________________

6. Locate the Panasonic Hometown Hockey Zone and browse through the

“Year in Review” displays and list three North American professional hockey leagues and a team from each respective league. (i.e. NHL – Calgary Flames) _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________

World of Hockey Zone 7. The Canadian Loonie became a symbol for our national teams following

the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. World renowned Canadian ice makers prepared the ice for the Olympic Games and before freezing, a loonie was placed in the ice for good luck. Both the Canadian Men’s and Women’s hockey teams won Olympic gold medals on this ice. Where did the “Lucky Loonie” witness the event? _________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________

8. The IIHF Honour Roll pays homage to the finest players and executives

from around the world. Locate the IIHF Honour Roll and record the names of the first three women inducted. 1._________________________________________________ 2. _________________________________________________ 3. _________________________________________________

Verizon Great Hall 9. He is noted for contributing to the legacy of hockey and his name

continues to be part of the game. As you walk up the stairs to the Verizon Great Hall, you will find him pointing the way to the Stanley Cup. Who is this man? _________________________________________________________

10. In 1893, Lord Stanley of Preston, the Governor-General of Canada donated a trophy at the request of his hockey-playing sons. Today, it is the oldest professional team trophy competed for in North America. Although the award is commonly known by the name of its donor, this trophy of hockey supremacy has another name. Look at The Stanley Cup on display in the Verizon Great Hall or the original bowl in the vault and find the original name of hockey’s most prized possession. _________________________________________________________
