ABOUT US

HelpAge India is a registered organisationworking for the cause and care of disadvantaged older persons in India.

HelpAge leads the movement to shiftsociety’s outlook towards the disadvantagedelderly from that of pity, to that of respectand dignity. We advocate for the rights ofthe elderly, and focus on issues such aselder-abuse, family care, social inclusion,pensions and welfare schemes for the poor. We promote awareness and understanding of elder issues within society, and help the elderly gain awareness of and access to their rights. We also work in the fields of healthcare,livelihood support, shelter, elder self-help,welfare, counseling and disastermitigation.

With your support, we can make their livesbetter and help give them the respect theydeserve.

Greetings from HelpAge India !Some sights in a country like ours are so commonplace that we often miss out on themessage that they send out, crying to be heard. One such sight is that of the forlorn old persons. One sees this figure everywhere--- in villages, towns and cities; on streets, in parks and sadly enough, in homes. This figure is so ubiquitous that it has become part of our landscape. Not surprising because the old in India today number 100 million and aregrowing rapidly.

The achievement of HelpAge India in serving 90 districts of the country and reachingover a million elderly has all been made possible by the generous and consistentsupport of thousands of individual donors like you, all of whom find in their heart thecompassion for the helpless elderly inspite of the many other demands on yourresources. We salute you for your conviction, and urge you to keep your faith in the actof giving for charity.

Our work has seen many dimensions: providing quick, compassionate and caring serviceto elders in urban areas and villages during disasters like the Gujarat and Kashmirearthquakes and the Tsunami aftermath in South India and the recent Uttarakhandflash floods. Our medical doctors, who provide treatment in our 81 mobile medical vans,are the finest mobile medical service providers in the country and among the bestgeriatric doctors. The 1.25 million treatments provided by our programme have beenjudged as the highest number delivered by a single agency and listed in the Limca Bookof Records. The PHD Chamber of Commerce has adjudged HelpAge’s work as the LargestSocial Contribution by a single NGO.

These laurels are only a motivation for us to do more. This humbling work and the significant contributions of so many people to it have made us what we are today: the proud trustee of the hopes and aspirations of the millions of our elderly.

What we do to help the elderlySUPPORT A GRAN :Through the Support A Granprogramme, HelpAge Indiaencourages individuals andorganizations to help fulfillthe basic needs of destituteelders.

MOBILE MEDICARE UNITS :Our Mobile Medicare Unitstake the doctor and free medication to the doorstepsof elderly in rural areas andurban slums.

RESTORING VISION :We conduct free cataractoperations every year, restoringthe vision of many elders,thereby helping them regaintheir independence.

ADVOCACY : We make people and the government aware of theconcerns and needs of theelders in our society though various advocacy programmes. We also make elders awareof their own rights, to accesssocial, food and habitat security.

OLD AGE HOMES :We support old age homes,hospitals and care centres forthe needy elderly.

INCOME GENERATION :Many older persons need towork in order to survive.We have helped set upincome generation projectsthrough which they canregain their status in thefamily and community.

RELIEF AND REHABILITATION :Elderly persons are especially vulnerable during disasters.We have undertaken relief andrehabilitation programs inGujarat, Bihar, Coastal India,Jammu & Kashmir andUttarakhand.

HELPLINES :Our Helplines in more than20 cities across the countryprovide information andhelp to older personsin distress.
