A Bit of History Continuing with Phil Fawcett and his years as a teacher in Big Valley. (2nd year 1939/40) as told by Phil Fawcett Dances were an important part of the social life in the small towns and rural areas. In the rural areas they would occasionally have “Square Dance” nights in the small rural school house. All the desks would be piled on top of each other along the side of the school room, thus clearing the entire floor area except for the stove which sometimes was located in the middle of the room. The music was provided usually by an old time fiddle player (John Wesner probably) and someone who could accompany the fiddler by chording on the piano. Since I played the piano “by ear” I often filled in at the piano. The “caller” had all the calls memorized by rote and yelled them out in strong rhythm without the help of amplification. He didn’t need it. I can remember on such square dance on a bitterly cold February night out at the Vimy Ridge School (west of Big Valley). The stove, a pot-bellied Quebec heater, was going like a blow-torch in the centre of the room. Somehow or other, two squares were whirling about on either side of the stove, with no-one touching it. I think it was Pop Hockley who was calling the dance. Whoever it was, he was singing the instructions out at the top of his voice, when his false teeth popped out of his mouth. He caught them in mid-air flight, shoved them back in his mouth, and hardly missed a measure.

We would dance, eat sandwiches provided, and drink tea or coffee, into the wee small hours of the morning. The babies and very young children would sleep in baskets or boxes shoved between the stacked school desks. The older children all joined in the dances. We’d ride back into town in a box sleigh hauled by a team of horses. The young people would be pushing each other off the sleigh, snow-balling each other, singing and shouting---all the way into town. As I tucked myself into bed, dawn would be breaking, and I realized that the farm boys and girls who had been at the dance might not have time to get any sleep at all.
