Task Card #13
Write down which grammatical rules the author follows in the passage. Write a sentence explaining each rule.
In Stoneygate there was a wilderness. It was an empty space between the houses and the river, where the ancient pit, the mine, had been. That’s where we played Askew’s game, the game called Death. We used to gather at the school’s gates after the bell had rung. We stood there whispering and giggling. After five minutes, Bobby Carr told us it was time and he led us through the wilderness to Askew’s den, a deep hole dug into the earth.
From Kit’s Wilderness by David Almond
Task Card #14
Write down which grammatical rules the author follows in the passage. Write a sentence explaining each rule.
One warm Saturday morning in August, Henry Huggins and his mother and father were eating breakfast in their square white house on Klickitat Street. Henry's dog Ribsy sat close to Henry's chair, hoping for a handout. While Mr. And Mrs. Huggins listened to the nine o'clock news on the radio, Henry tried to think of something interesting he could do that day. Of course he could play ball with Scooter or ride his bicycle over to Robert's house and work on the model railroad, but those were things he could do every day. Today he wanted to do something different, something he had never done before.

Task Card #14
Write down which grammatical rules the author follows in the passage. Write a sentence explaining each rule.
I was hanging out in Benny's, playing pool, when I heard Biff Wilcox was looking to kill me. Benny's was the hangout for the junior high kids. The high schoolers used to go there, but when the younger kids moved in, they moved out. Benny was pretty mad about it. Junior high kids don't have as much money to spend. He couldn't do much about it except hate the kids, though. If a place gets marked as a hangout, that's it.
From Rumble Fish by S.E. Hinton
Task Card #15
Write down which grammatical rules the author follows in the passage. Write a sentence explaining each rule.
"This is an island. At least I think it's an island. That's a reef out in the sea. Perhaps there aren't any grownups anywhere. The fat boy looked startled. "There was that pilot. But he wasn't in the passenger cabin, he was up in front." The fair boy was peering at the reef through screwed up eyes. "All them other kids," the fat boy went on. "Some of them must have got out. They must have, musn't they?"

1- The author used capitalization. He capitalized Stonygate, Bobby Carr, and Askew because they are all names. He also capitalized the beginning of sentences. He used an apostrophe for “that’s” because it is a contraction for “that is”. He also used an apostrophe for “school’s” because the gates are at the school.
2- The author capitalized the beginnings of sentences and also capitalized Saturday, August, Klicktat Street, Henry, Ribsy, Mr. and Mrs. Huggins, Robert, Scooter, and Henry because they are all the names of places or people. The author used “their” because the house belongs to the family. The author used apostrophes to show ownership of the dog, chair, and house.
3- He used capitalization for the names of all of the people. This is because they are proper nouns. The author also capitalized all of the I’s and the beginning of sentences. He used an apostrophe to show ownership (note- students will have to infer that Benny's means Benny’s house). He also used an apostrophe for the contraction “don’t”, “couldn’t”, and “that’s”. These mean do not, could not, and that is.
4- The author used “it’s”, and that means it is because the author says, “it is an island”. I know this because its and island doens’t make sense. The author uses apostrophes for two contractions. He shortened that is to “that’s” and must not to “musn’t”. The author also capitalized the beginning of sentences. “I” is also capitalized even if it’s in the middle of a sentence because “I” is always capitalized.
