Walking into the home of Dwayne and Charlsie Seal during the Christmas season is breathtaking! The entire home is beautifully decorated with, not one, but seven unique Christmas trees and other holiday accents. They even have two “seals” on their cof-fee table in the living room. They are looking forward to their son, Stacy, to come home from South Carolina for the holidays. He is always a big help in entertaining and enjoying all of the family. Dwayne is retired from Gen-eral Electric and stays busy helping Charlsie and enjoying golf with his friends.

As we toured their home, we noticed the first Christmas tree in the living room rotating with decorations that match the decor. Another one is in Charlsie’s office, where most of her work goes on, as a realtor with Cold-well Banker Realty House. The third tree is in the master bedroom, and has purple lights and purple ornaments along with similar decor and accents as those in the master bath.

Charlsie’s favorite tree is in Stacy’s room and is decorated in orange and white, the U.T. tree. Next they have a tree on the covered porch outside the living room. It lights up the porch that has garland draped around each arch way.

The family room downstairs, has Dwayne’s favorite tree, decorated with red berries and red birds. He loves the nature-look of this tree. The final tree is on the lower patio which lights up the entire patio.

Merry Christmas, Morristown! There is no better way to cel-ebrate the most wonderful time of the year than with a story about the birthplace of Jesus. That is of course, other than walking the streets for yourself, which is exactly what my friend Lou Ann Smith is doing. She has lived in Israel for the past year and is enjoying the opportunity of engulfi ng herself with the rich culture and breathtaking scenery that the Holy Land has to offer. I emailed her to ask if she could share some pictures and traditions of Israel with Morristown this Christ-mas season. Take hold of your imagination and travel through the portals of time to the birth of Jesus in Israel.

Merry Christmas from Israel!!! Written by Andrea Odom

Lou Ann describes Israel for you this way:

I cannot even accurately describe the beauty of this place, oth-er than it is majestically, breathtaking! Some of the cities are carved into the mountains with a few freestanding temples, but almost all of cities like Petra, are carved into the sides of the mountains. The whole city is hidden in the mountains and there are caves, houses, temples, monasteries, burial chambers, banquet halls, cisterns, aqueducts all built into the sides of the mountains. The monastery, which is the largest building...can only be reached by climbing up the 800 stairs that are on the side of the mountain. Needless to say, I took a donkey ride up the 800 stairs and it was so much fun!!! The mountains of Jordan are truly, truly amazing. I didn’t know that rocks and mountains could be made up of so many dif-ferent colors. I think it has something to do with the mineral deposits and sediments in the rocks or something. There are so many different colors in the rocks and mountains....pur-ples, greens, yellows, reds, blacks. Some of the carved build-ings actually looked like someone had taken a paintbrush and just splashed bright colors of paint onto the mountains. My favorites were the reds and purples smeared together on the sides of the mountains. Some areas looked like they had been tie-dyed with all the colors swirling together up the sides of the mountains and in the caves and tombs. There were areas where you walked and the sand on the ground was purple and some areas where the sand was red.

1Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2Saying, Where is He that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the east, and are come to worship him.

Hello! Morristown.... Where you’ll fi nd your friends, family & neighbors, are more interesting than you think! Page 11

The skies are so beautiful at night here. You can see the mil-lions of stars shining so brightly. One night we took a night hike in the mountains to an old abandoned army base. It was so gorgeous....the moon was full and you could see the moun-tain ranges of Jordan....the Jordanian mountains are huge. One day we went to Timna Park...which is a gorgeous area of mountains that are full of ancient copper mines. It has the oldest copper mines in the world...the ancient Egyptians used to mine the area over six thousand years ago. We went under-ground and climbed through some of the old mines and there are actually Egyptian wall paintings on the walls.

An interesting fact that she notes is that Christmas cel-ebrations take place on sev-eral different dates in Israel. The Western denominations and the Russian Orthodox Church celebrate Christmas on December 25th follow-ing the Gregorian calendar. The Armenian, the Greek Orthodox, and the Rus-sian church, following the Julian calendar celebrate on various days during the fi rst few weeks of January.

There are those Christians who get the opportunity to cele-brate our Savior’s birth in the holiest land of all: Israel! These groups consist mainly of Arab Christians, foreign executives and workers, and diplomats. There are also large numbers of Christians who make pilgrim-ages from overseas. One of the most well known celebrations takes place at the Church of the Nativity and in Manger Square in Nazareth. Some believe the Church of the Nativity is the place of the birth of Jesus. A fourteen-pointed star inside the church marks the actual place where some say Mary gave birth. A midnight mass is cele-brated here and is by invitation only. Many services held are by invitation only, and many of them are broadcast on screens

outside, as well as by television all over the world. One will see many different processions passing with priest dressed in robes of varied color and style. Many carry icons of Jesus and Mary, banners, rosaries, and pray and sing as they pass by. For many of the priests and monks from overseas, it is so impor-tant to celebrate Christmas in the holy land, that they refuse to travel home to visit their families, many of their families come to them. The main destinations for celebrations are Nazareth and Jerusalem. Very elaborate mosaics that are beautifully ar-tistic decorate many of the churches.

Isn’t it wonderful just to imagine the birthplace of Jesus? When you are decorating your Christmas tree, hanging stock-ings by the fi re, and singing Christmas Carols with your fam-ily and friends this holiday take time to remember that there is a solemn and holy reason that we celebrate. That reason is the most precious gift of all, Jesus, given to us by the heavenly Father.

Lou Ann Smith is originally from North Carolina. Several years ago she began to feel a call on her life to be a missionary in America and Internationally. She came to Morristown in 2005 with Tommy Tenney Ministries as an intern, to do a minis-try/outreach conf. People came from around the world. When her internship was complete with Tommy Tenney she joined Friend-Ships. While Lou Ann was with friend-Ships Katrina hit New Orleans and she and her ship were stationed there to help. This is just one of the ministries with which she assists. She always felt it in her heart to go to Israel, but when she went she knew that she had to stay. She works with many ministries there just as people in America do here.

586-2363 John Wharton35 years experience

As the cooler months fast approach, my memories of a warm woodburninig fi re recur and bring a happy smile. When I brought my newly chopped wood from outside to place by my fi replace, I glanced up at my chimney top and saw, to my hor-ror, a mesh screen was held by bricks on top of my chimney. I suppose the previous homeowner placed it there to keep small animals and debris from entering the chim-ney, but it was an eyesore and did noth-ing to protect my chimney from its worst enemy: rain and snow. After bringing my wood inside, I also realized I needed to clean the ashes out of my fi replace from the previous winter. Since I had occupied my home for two years and had not had

the chimney swept, I decided to call Pro-fessional Fireplace & Chimney Service to inquire about their services. John Whar-ton, the owner and Certifi ed Chimney and Venting Specialist, came to my home to inspect my fi replace and chimney. He not-ed every aspect of my 1957 masonry fi re-place and masonry wood stove fl ue. The fi replace is in the basement in a corner and extends two fl oors up to the roof. After his inspection, John noticed the mason who built the chimney left wide open breaches (holes) where there is no chimney liner. Brick was exposed which allowed smoke and other products of combustion to es-cape the chimney and fl ue. I was horrifi ed when John showed me these problems!

This situation is a major fi re hazard and needs to be repaired before I use my fi replace. I mentioned to John that there was excessive heat given off on a wall upstairs. We inspected the upstairs wall and John found the wall was cracked and had been cracked several times and patched. My home inspection missed that two years ago. John suspected that one or more of several things might have occurred: 1) there were no fl ue tiles in that area, 2) the side wall of the chimney may not have been put there, 3) the fl ue tiles, if they were there, may have cracked, perhaps from a chimney fi re, or 4) the chimney may have been built touching the wood of my house allowing the heat to radi-ate through the wood members, creating a fi re hazard. He proposed to perform a chim-scan which is a video inspection of the interior of the chimney. The chim-scan revealed no cracks in the chimney but you could see the holes in the lower brick. Also a good sweep was past due. I am looking into the options of repairing my fi replace and chimney.

My experience with John and his great knowl-edge of fi replaces was well worth the time and cost to get a proper inspection. I want to thank the Professional Fireplace and Chimney Service for making my home safe again and warm too.

Christmas is right around the corner and it is time to bring the community together to help meet the holiday needs of children in our area. The Holiday Hope Fund campaign is just one of the many ways that Morristown Hamblen Cen-tral Services, Inc. is involved to help families in our community. Even though this program receives a great deal of publicity during the Christmas season, it is just one of 22 different programs that the agency provides to the com-munity. This year over 2000 children will be visited by “Santa” and 2000 families will have a Christmas dinner, all because of the generos-ity of our neighbors who make it possible.

The new 44,000 square foot facility located at 2450 South Cumberland St. has been the biggest Christmas present to the staff at Central Services. They no longer have to totally disassemble the so-cial service agency to conduct the Holiday Hope Fund/Toys for Tots drive. The 10,000 sq. ft. ware-house addition has been renovated and decorated by several different groups in town to resemble Santa’s workshop at the North Pole. The local elves will be working hard to insure that Hamblen County children have a merry Christmas.

Central Services Prepares to Help Morristown Families for Christmas

As a participating agency in the local P-16 Council, Central Services is a vital link to provid-ing some of the fi nancial, emotional, nutritional and social resources that are necessary to support families in helping their children succeed. The community involvement opportunities offered all year and especially during the Holiday season, provide youth the chance to make a difference locally. They develop models of caring behavior, awareness of the needs of others, and a sense of personal responsibility to contribute to the larger society. These foundations lay the ground work for nurturing a youth population that is ready to move into leadership positions that will continue a healthy and prosperous community.

Don’t you want to be a part of something so pow-erful that it can change society? Be a part of the work at Central Services, not just at Christ-mas, but all year long. Call Barbara Simmons at 586-9431, to fi nd out how you can make a difference.

Every Christmas Eve our family gathers around the Christmas tree while Mom prepares her stpecial home-made eggnog and chicken salad. Before exchanging our gifts, The Christmas Story is read in remembrance of the true meaning of Christmas.

This Christmas, as we count our many blessings due to friends and family, clients, customers, and colleagues, we would like to express our sincere appreciation for everyone’s love, support, and prayers.

“Thank You” for “Weaving Dreams Into Reality.” We have truly been blessed and touched by many. God bless each and everyone....

Visiting the Olde Towne Quilt Shoppe in Bulls Gap will allow you to view some of Morristown’s past. Refi nished hardwood fl oors, salvaged from the old Morristown Tobacco Warehouse, were installed in the renovated 80-year-old former railroad commissary. Beautiful quilts adorn the sal-vaged display cases with sliding, pull-out garment arms.

Gail Wise, former Morristown nurse and owner of the Olde Towne Quilt Shoppe, has spent many months renovating the building but keeping an authentic 1920s look. She can now focus on the quilt quild and coloful fabrics she can offer the area quilters.

El Shaddai is one of the names of God meaning “the giver of life/ the fruitful one.” We named our jewelry designs after God because they are inspired by scripture. I have always enjoyed beautiful, quality jewelry especially crosses and other religious emblems. Most of us know that the cross is a symbol of the sacrifice of Christ for our sins. God began to deal with me about creating an empty tomb to tell the rest of this holy and victorious story. The cross represents the sacrifice, but the “empty” tomb represents the victorious resurrection that proved that Jesus is the messiah. Therefore, God has led us to create a 10k solid gold empty tomb, He is Risen, to compliment the many crosses that His people already wear. El Shaddai Designs has created a beautiful combination of the cross and the empty tomb in a circle of unity. This piece, The Saviors Sacrifice and Victory, tells the complete and miraculous story of the death and resurrection of Jesus. The purpose of El Shaddai Designs is to spread the gospel

using these rare pieces of beautiful, high quality jewelry as witnessing tools.

Hello! Morristown.... Where you’ll fi nd your friends, family & neighbors, are more interesting than you think! Page 25

The alarm clock goes off at 5 o’clock pm in two separate homes around the Morristown, TN area, one in Talbott the other in White Pine. Dr. Ramsey Larson, MFH, Emergency Department Medical Director of Morristown Hamblen Medical Health Care, and Dene Masengill, MFH, a lifelong residence of the Morristown area and local horse trainer, re-spectively leap out of bed with their minds racing forward to the day ahead. Foxhunting is on their minds.

Ramsey dons his red coat, white breeches, and tall black boots with tan tops, the uni-form of a master, while Dene slips into her black coat, opting out of the red one for the day, tan breeches, and canary vest and pulls on the tall black boots. Both masters of the TN Valley Hunt head out the door to the barn with anticipated excitement of the day’s hunt, sending goose bumps down their spines.

Once in the barn, horses are groomed to a shine, tacked up with saddle and bridle, load-ed onto the trailer, and off to the meet location of the day.

Upon arriving at the meet, greetings are ex-changed with other members of the hunt club and the huntsman, a stirrup cup (usually port) is tossed back by all, riders mount their hors-es, the pack of Penn Mary Del foxhounds are released from the hound truck, and the hunt is on.

East Tennessee is the home of the Tennessee Valley Hunt Club, a club made up of all walks of life. There are housewife, doctors, lawyers, legislatures, nurses, farmers, and schoolteach-ers. Anybody can hunt if they have a desire to ride horses in the wide-open spaces and enjoy seeing hounds work.

You may be wondering. Foxhunting - what do they do? Do they kill the fox? Answers: The members ride their horses watching the hounds work as they search out the fox. Once they fi nd one, the hunt is off. Riders gallop

Release the Dogs, the HUNT IS ON!

across the countryside, jumping fences in their paths, hoping to get a glimpse of the fox. The fox is a very clever animal. He will trot along just in front of the hounds, leading them on a merry chase. When he grows tired of the game, he will slip away to his den and laugh at the hounds trying to fi nd him. So the answer to the second question is no. We do not kill the fox at all. In fact we should really be called foxchasers since that is basically what we do.

The huntsman will blow the horn calling all the hounds back and will then go off to another thicket in search of another fox.

TVH’s hunting season begins in Sept. with three months of cubhunting where the new young hounds are introduced to the pack and hunting. Riders wear the traditional tweed at-tire called ratcatcher during this season which consists of tweed coat, brown helmet, and brown boots.

On the Saturday after Thanksgiving the grand Opening Meet is held at the hunt’s Kennel ter-ritory where the huntsman lives and the hounds are housed.

The morning is steeped in tradition and pag-eantry. This is the day everyone comes out to enjoy the catered breakfast in the fi eld, browse through the sporting art and foxhunting good-ies for sale, and enjoy the Irish Folk trio while warming by the bonfi re.

Riders will now switch to their formal attire on this day. Black coats, boots, helmets, crisp white stock ties and canary vest. Red coats are worn by staff, masters, and gentlemen members who have been awarded the club’s

offi cial colors. Once the hounds are blessed, the prayer is said, the stirrup cup is toasted and tossed back, the hunt begins. All the bystanders buy their tickets for one of the Tally Ho wagons pulled by teams of beauti-ful draft horses and jump on board to follow the mounted fi eld of horses. After watching the hounds work and seeing the riders ma-neuver their horses, the wagons end up on Champagne Hill in the fi eld of landowners, Jack and Bev Kramer, where everyone over 21 is served a glass of champagne. Here the riders have a glass as well, to toast in the be-ginning of the formal season, to mingle with the wagons, and hopefully to receive treats such as carrots and slices of apple for their horses from the wagon riders.

If you think you might like to learn more about this wonderful sport of foxhunting, please contact Dene Masengill, MFH, for info on hunting and to receive an invitation to the Opening Meet festivities. Dene can be reached at 423-736-3287. Mail inquires to Post Offi ce Box 609, Talbott, TN 37877.

If Rhonda Krenzer ever decided to run away and join the circus, she would be best suited to perform as a juggler. Between her family, church, residential sales, commercial sales, and property management, Rhonda works hard to keep everything going smoothly and not “let the ball drop.”

In 1996 Rhonda decided to join ReMax Real Estate Ten. Real estate was an ideal profession for her outgoing personality, friendliness, and natural sales ability. This new career path also permitted her to set her own hours leaving time to raise her daughter, Alison, and spend time with her husband, Raymond “Dutch” Krenzer. After spending a few years leasing properties for friends and clients, she saw the need to form a property management company. In 2003 Krenzer Property Management was formed and it has grown exponentially since then. KPM now leases over 130 apartments, duplexes, condos, and single family homes in Hamblen, Jefferson, and Grangier counties.

But Rhonda’s true success and satisfaction comes from selling real estate. Selling real estate has helped her develop relationships with many friends throughout the Lakeway Area. There are few things more rewarding than fi nding someone a house and then watching a family make it into a home.

Rhonda, who has an MBA from SUNY at Buffalo, continues to educate herself about all aspects of the real estate profession. She is the Principal Broker at the ReMax Ten Stonewall Court location and has numerous designations such as ABR, CRS, GRI, and SRES. And even though there are no Pod Casts in her immediate future, Rhonda stays abreast of new technology and reaps the benefi ts of her web sites: rhondakrenzer.com, krenzerproperty.com, and executiveplaces.com.

Rhonda’s newest juggling act involves her acquisition of Executive Places with her business partner and friend, Tony Calfee. Executive Places is being managed by Sara Hall who also manages the Krenzer Property Management properties. Sara, a three year resident of Morristown, has been working for Rhonda since 2006 and they make an excellent team.

What’s next for Rhonda? Can she toss a few more balls into this juggling act? You bet! She is very interested in the new commercial offi ce ReMax Real Estate Ten recently opened on West 1st North St. and she hopes to widen her knowledge and experience in commercial listings and sales. And why not? When you already juggle three businesses, a family, and a social life the sky is truly the limit.

Morristown East High School for-mer football and baseball player Scott Thomas understands the importance of education, rehabilitation, and orthotics. When Scott graduated from high school, his family members were in the medi-cal and military fi elds. Scott wanted to be a coach and a teacher. He set his goals high, enlisted in the U.S. Army, and became a member of the prestigious Airborne Rangers. At age 20, he had an accident from a parachute jump. Eigh-teen hours later, he was picked up from waist-deep water where he landed. His days of jumping from airplanes were over, and he could no longer function in his military role. Scott took an honor-able discharge from the army.

The only real trade skill Thomas had de-veloped coming out of the military ser-vice was that of a police offi cer, but he wanted to do something along the lines of medicine to help others. He began a new career at Morristown Hamblen Healthcare Systems, and then Lakeway Regional Hospital, and worked in both therapy and emergency room surgery. He also served as a member of Morristown EMS and the rescue squad. During these early years, Thomas developed a strong interest in the fi eld of bracing. Rehabili-tation and orthotics became his new ca-reer path, and he enrolled, and graduated from, Emory University in Atlanta. He did his residency in Orthotics at the Uni-versity of Alabama, Birmingham.

Today, Thomas is a practitioner with Southern Orthocare, a Home Medical and Orthotics business located on East Andrew Johnson Highway. He works closely with local orthopedic surgeons and family practice physicians, physical therapists, and athletic trainers - provid-ing braces for people of all ages. How-ever, helping children with athletic inju-ries has become a calling for him. For the past eight years, he has served the local community by providing medical sup-port (on a volunteer basis) to local high schools on a regular basis, sometimes up to 20 hours a week. Morristown West High School Football Head Coach Don Woods comments, “Scott has a God-gift to communicate with young people… and they understand that he cares and has their best interest at heart. I could never repay him for what he has done for Morristown West… he is a big part of our success.”

Thomas has braced professional athletes such as Charles Barkley, as well as pro-fessional teams including the Tennessee Thundercats, the Ice Bears hockey team, and the Tennessee Smokies. Profession-

al wrestlers to whom he has provided medical support include Ric Flair (early 1970s, 17-time world champion wres-tler), “Triple H”- Hunter Hurst Hemsley, and “Kane” who starred in the recent motion picture, “See No Evil.” He has also provided his Orthotics expertise to athletic teams from the Universities of Tennessee and Kentucky, Carson New-man and Tusculum Colleges, and Wal-ters State Community College. Student athletes from the local area who have gone away to college often come back to Morristown so that Scott can take care of them. From Chattanooga to Johnson City, Scott “braces” himself when ath-letes call, and avails himself to respond to their needs. Southern Orthocare CEO Joe Huntsman, Jr. sums up, “Scott is all about making a difference in the lives of individuals who come to him for help. He genuinely cares for people and is very good at what he does.” Thomas says of himelf, “If I would put a brace on my mom, then I would put it on a patient.” Thomas and his beloved wife Tammy have two sons, Jordan, 18, and Troy, 16.

FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED

The days are long gone of a plain-Jane kitchen. No

pans. Kitchen cabinetry has evolved over the years into a major entity of one’s home. Many imaginative hours can be spent on fully revamping the hub of your home.

With that in mind the koncept for Morristown’s own dream kitchen builder was born. The cornerstone of Kitchen Koncepts is quality and service for its customers that exceeds well beyond their expectations. The founder, Bryant Lilly was born and raised in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, a small town that mirrors Morristown. There, he began his career in the woodworking industry over 20 years ago. He was brought to Morristown in 1998 as plant manager of Triangle Pacifi c. At that time, he met his wife and current business partner, Jessika. Since then, he continued his successes throughout Texas, Florida, and Canada holding positions from VP of Operations to President of leading cabinet companies. All the while, Bryant and Jessika were being drawn back to her roots in East Tennessee where they decided to start a kitchen cabinet company that is known today as Kitchen Koncepts.

After completing high school, their son Zach chose to join the family business while earning his degree and aspires to later become an integral part of future operations. Eventually, they hope for their other children, Courtney and Colebi to acquire their same vision of providing a quality product and service to their community by joining the Kitchen Koncepts team.

Skin cancer is a huge issue for our patients. Our offi ce treats hundreds of these each year. While years ago, people were commonly disfi gured or even killed by skin cancer; better treatments and earlier detection have dramatically reduced death and disability.

Dermatologist treat most skin cancer in the United States. The reason for this is that we have pioneered treatments that lead to better outcomes for our skin cancer patients.

We still treat many skin cancers with excision and sutures but have specialized treatment for certain other subtypes. Cryosur-gery, radiation therapy, Mohs micrographic surgery, and laser are some of these other forms of treatment.

SKIN TIGHT Helpful skin facts that you can use.with Charles S. Fulk, M.D., FACP, FAAD

New Skin Cancer TreatmentHaving just returned from our annual surgery meeting in Chicago, the results of some new studies were presented. We now have new products that prevent blood vessels from reaching newly forming skin cancer. If we remove the cancer by laser and then use this medicine in the treated area, the likelihood of the cancer ever returning is greatly reduced. This is an important advance in the treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer.

This is just another way in which research by dermatologist is leading to better patient care.

Dr. Frank Ellis2008 is shaping up to be a big year. It will mark the 20th year in private practice for Dr. Frank Ellis. It also will be the 50th birthday for East TN-OBGYN PC which Dr. Ellis has proudly been a member of since 1988. Lastly, 2008, represents the 50th year the Lakeway region has had a “Dr. Ellis” on call, as his father, Dr. John Ellis, started his 40-year practice in Jefferson City in 1958.

Frank is a local doctor in every sense of the word, starting with his delivery at Morristown-Hamblen Hospital by Dr. Charles Scott. Dr. Scott was one of the founding doctors of East TN-OBGYN and was the senior partner of the group when Dr. Ellis later joined.

Raised in Jefferson City, Frank attended Jefferson County High School and later Carson-Newman College where he graduated suma cum laude. He then continued a family tradition with his graduation from the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis. His father and older brother, John, now a pediatrician in Memphis, had both graduated from there also.

Frank’s interest in obstetrics and gynecology began during his medical school days. He viewed the blend aspects of medicine, surgery, and pediatrics to be challenging and started his Ob/Gyn residency at UT-Knoxville in 1984. He completed the last 2 years of his residency at the Greenville Memorial Hospital System in Greenville, SC before starting into private practice in Morristown in 1988.

Frank is married to the former Karen Price and has three children, Will 19, Taylor 16, and Ashley 22. Karen is a women’s health nurse practitioner, who presently works at Morristown - Hamblen Healthcare System. Ashley is working on a degree toward becoming an elementary teacher. Will is attending Carson - Newman and is considering a degree in physical therapy, while Taylor is at Morristown West High School and believes he wants to go into Sports Medicine.

An avid reader, Frank’s other hobbies include playing piano as well as being a big sports fan. He has watched Will and now Taylor play for the West High Trojan Football Team.

Commenting on his practice, Frank states “I have been blessed over the years to have worked with so many fi ne physicians. Being a part of a group tends to grow a doctor professionally with daily challenges to keep up on a knowledge and skills level. My philosophy of treating patients as if they were family members was ingrained in me by my father. I love what I do and could nott imagine a more rewarding career. Being able to share the miracle of childbirth with over 4000 families has been wonderful. I look forward to the next 20 years.”

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! It’s Christmas Time again! Let this holiday season and New Year be one full of fun, fellowship, lots of laughter, happiness, joy, peace, love and good health.

Remember to focus on what is important and do not get caught up in all of the hustle and bustle of the season. Oh, the sweets, meats and treats that will be laid before us and Oh…., the extra pounds that will be laid upon us if we over indulge.

The best gift we can give ourselves is good health. It is vitally important to support our immune system by keeping our stress levels to a minimum, continue to exercise regularly, get plenty of rest and maintain a healthy diet.

Spend time with those you love, being sure to make memories that will last a lifetime.

FROM ALL OF US TO ALL OF YOU…..MERRY CHRISTMAS AND MAY GOD RICHLY BLESS EACH OF YOU AND YOUR FAMILY IN THE NEW YEAR!!!

Bonnie Vick, M.D., Ph.D. at Healthstar, knows the importance of taking care of families, including her own and many others. She graduated from the New York Military Academy and obtained her M.D. and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from East Tennessee State University where she met her husband, Bob, of sixteen years. Dr. Vick has maintained her full-service family practice at Healthstar for the past eight years. With an active four-year-old daughter, Maggie, the support of her loving husband, Bob, and the addition of a new nurse practitioner, Christina, Dr. Vick can understand the challenge and importance of balance between her profession and her family.

Family Physician is “All in The Family” - Professionally And Personally

When Dr. Vick was a young girl, she knew she wanted to be a doctor from the time she started school. Her aunt is a doctor and was an inspiration to young Bonnie that women could become doctors too. Bonnie was very active in her recreational activities when she was growing up: horseback riding, tap and ballet dancing, and gymnastics. Since she experienced so many extracurricular activities as a small child, she wants their daughter to be exposed to them also. Maggie is taking horseback riding lessons at Walnut Grove Stables, ballet at Turning Point and gymnastics at Powerhouse Gym.

With her husband, Bob, she enjoys watching UT football games and NASCAR races, playing golf, and ballroom dancing. One night a week, the couple put on their dance shoes and enjoy their time together dancing on the ballroom fl oor. Bob says Bonnie has a full-circle job caring for people from birth to death: from babies, teens, adults, to geriatrics. Even though she has worked twelve-hour days, fi ve days a week, and a full weekend every month, she still fi nds time to enjoy life outside of the offi ce with her family.

Since her new nurse practitioner, Christina, has joined the family practice team, the overfl ow of patients have extra care given to them. She is excited about the opportunity to care for and treat the Morristown area. She resides in Grainger County with her two children, Caleb and Cassidy, and has lived there for over twenty years. Christina, like Dr. Vick, likes UT football and spending quality time with her family. Since graduating from Carson Newman from the nurse practitioner program, she is looking forward to having more time to spend on personal interests. The patients understand the importance of medical staff taking care of them and enjoying family time too.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION: Dr. Vick would like to spend more time with Maggie and Bob, and to make sure her patients have the best of care. The balance and importance of family life and her medical profession are, to the family physician (as Archie and Edith Bunker would say), “All in the Family.”

Dr. Black- Living Out His Dream at Lakeway Regional HospitalMy mother knew when I was four years old that I wanted to deliver babies and I maintained that dream throughout my entire life. I grew up in Fort Worth, Tex-as, completed my undergraduate degree in Austin, and medical school in San Antonio. I had a wonderful opportunity to come to Knoxville to learn surgery from some very good surgeons. As far as my career, I have had all of my jobs in the medical fi eld. My fi rst job was as a nurse aid in a nursing home, then I worked in a hospital as a nurse aid, a phlebotamist, a unit secretary, and a monitor tech. Working in the medical fi elds were nice because they gave me a good perspective on how things are done and how diffi cult other people’s jobs are. I did not come from a family of physicians. I grew up in a normal working class family and I am the only doctor in my family. I am the oldest of three children with a younger brother and sister. My wonderful wife is named Melanie. We have three children: 14 year-old son, Scott, 8 year-old girl, Lauren, and 17 month-old girl, Madi-son (Mattie). Melanie is a nurse but is taking time off to raise our little girl, Mattie.

My two oldest children, Scott and Lau-ren, tell me they do not want to be doc-tors because their daddy has to work too much. We like to do outdoor activi-ties such as camping, fi shing, and play-ing ball. Scott and I also like to play golf. I took Scott fl ying when he was four years old and offered to let him handle the controls which he almost put

the plane into the ground. He will need some fl ying lessons soon.

Since my fi rst visit to Lakeway Region-al Hospital, I noticed the equipment is absolutely spectacular- the latest, the greatest, and the best that is on the mar-ket. I am.extremely impressed with the facilities, the staff, and the effi ciency in the operating room. One of the nicest things that Lakeway Regional Hospital has is that it is supported by a larger corporation. It has the ability to pur-chase some of the newer, more techno-logically advanced equipment. The op-erating room is much bigger than what UT has.

As a physician, I was a little apprehen-sive on coming to a bigger community than where I had recently practiced. I was one of three doctors in the previ-ous town. I thought I would be “a num-ber” but I was welcomed with open arms when I came to Morristown. Even though Morristown is located in a place where you have access to some of the larger cities, you do not have to leave Morristown to do EXACTLY what you can have done in Knoxville or Lexing-

ton. Everything that can be done in a big city can be done right here.

What we hear from patients, even with me being a new physician in town, is that the care they receive is exception-al. They feel very well taken care of and have a wonderful experience. Any-one that I have come in contact with so far that has delivered their infants at Lakeway Regional Hospital, had such a positive experience that they would recommend the experience to their friends and family. I think they would all say they would return and do it again. From the Black family, we want to thank you for making our experience with Morristown such a welcome one.

You will fi rst notice how the newest technology at Lakeway Regional Hospital impacts your ER visit when you present at the registration desk to be seen. As soon as your demo-graphic information is input into the system, you are quickly triaged by an RN. The RN will be able to access your prior medical history, allergies, and medication history all at the click of a button. Any changes in your history will easily be made here, saving valuable time to begin direct patient intervention.

Lakeway Regional Hospital’s Emergency Room utilizes an electronic documentation system called the ProMed Clini-cal System. This two part system includes ProMed Patient Manager and ProMed Reporter. ProMed Patient Manager allows Lakeway to electronically document and track all aspects of care including nursing processes and interven-tions, length of stay, quality management, and discharge instruction and teaching. Data is entered here to support patient tracking, clinical documentation, clinical practice guidelines, order entry, result reporting, patient acuity, and management statistics. Using this system contributes to a shorter ER visit and helps ensure quality care guidelines are followed. These are just two standards of care that the medical and nursing staff at Lakeway ER constantly strive to meet and exceed.

Your next encounter with this state-of –the- art system will be when you are placed in a treatment room and the nurse begins your initial assessment. You will notice that all of the documentation is done on a computer directly at the bed-side. This not only saves valuable time for nursing staff, but also directs the nurse down a personalized care pathway and provides you with the most comprehensive physical as-sessment possible. It also ensures real-time documentation. Real-time, or bedside, documentation has been proven to reduce charting errors and patient care related errors. Any physician orders, medication or treatment interventions, and patient progress can be entered right at the bedside.

Along with all of the obvious benefi ts of this system, there is a reporter portion of ProMed. Mrs. Houseright ER Director and Pam Johns, CNO review these reports on a daily basis . The reports are reviewed also by the ER Medical Director, Dr Dan Ross. In cooperation with the administrative team at Lakeway Regional Hospital, they work together to iden-tify trends, create plans for improvement and monitor com-pliance with LRH and national benchmarks for emergency care.

So what does all this mean to you as a patient? It means that quality care really is available right here at home.

Why spend time in an ER when you don’t have to?

As the day begins and a local client walks into the fi rst fl oor of 401 McFarland Street here in Morristown, he or she is greeted with a few smiling faces, as well as two grateful owners. The present client we see in this situation may need a range of items including home medical equipment, supplies, pre-packaged medications and/or a compounded prescription. He or she is in the right place and can obtain any or all of the previous at one location. The company we are speaking of, McFarland Home Medical Equipment and McFarland Pharmacy & Apothecary Services. The smiling faces would be the current thirty employees and the two men also willing to help that client would be co-owners, Randy DeBord and Mike Sigmon. Those thirty employees include: several certifi ed pharmacy technicians, two certifi ed respiratory therapists, a certifi ed nursing assistant, a regis-tered nurse, four pharmacists and a certifi ed pedorthist.

However, as many other locally owned and operated businesses, this company did not begin in the same manner in which it is today. As a matter of fact, it began with four men and a few ideas. Those four men included: Ken Smith, Ken’s son Kendrick Smith, Ken’s nephew Randy DeBord and Kendrick’s friend and classmate from pharmacy school Mike Sigmon. The four men sat down in August of 2003 to discuss some ideas of starting a local company to serve Morristown’s needs in the pharmacy area, specializing in long-term care.

With Ken’s fi nancial assistance as owner of Smith-Turner Drug Store in Sneedville, they were able to open for business at 808 West Fourth North Street in March of 2004. Very soon, it was apparent to Randy, with a background in sales, that Morristown also had a need for an HME company. In January of 2005, the HME side of McFarland Group opened its doors for business at 921 West Fourth North Street. As business began to grow and opportunities blossomed, McFarland was able to service the East Tennessee region with both pharmacy and home medical equipment. In December of 2005, Randy and Mike had the opportunity to purchase the business from Ken. They are still very thankful for the gracious help and wisdom from long-time business owner and pharmacist Ken Smith.

Co-owners Randy and Mike soon realized that trying to manage one full service company out of two separate buildings was not the easi-est for them or the customers. With a plan in mind, the two men and some fi fteen employees at that time moved under one roof at 401 McFarland Street in January of 2006. As the full service company still was growing and serving customers with a wide range of cus-tomers from the upper east Tennessee area to the west side of Knox-ville, Randy and Mike realized there was a need for a long-term care pharmacy in the Knoxville area to be able to service those clients the longest distance from Morristown. With a plan in mind, McFarland Pharmacy opened a second location off the Cedar Bluff exit in Knox-ville in May of 2006.

As I sat down with the two men recently, Randy and Mike both are local Morristown residents and are very grateful for the blessings that have allowed them to bring a business to Morristown and succeed. They said, “Humble beginnings with numerous blessings from God allowed us to create a company to a level that we never imagined.”

Randall Boyd DeBord, son of George and Anne DeBord of Morristown, graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in May of 1985. Some may remember Ran-dy from a different angle; he was a bass guitarist for local band “Top Secret” from 1983 to 1989. Randy married Wanda Stinnett on Au-

gust 1st 1998. They have two boys, Randall Jr. “Rand” who is eight years old and Dylan who just turned six years old. Randy and Wanda are members of First Baptist Church of Morristown. Randy has one brother, Mike DeBord who married Kathy McBride.

Randy has a background of sales and management but stated, “After I moved into management, I realized that my fi rst love was sales; I missed the personal challenge of reaching a pre-defi ned goal.”

Michael Keith Sigmon comes to Morristown from the sunny state of Florida. He is the son of Sandra Sigmon and Jim Sigmon, and has two brothers Jeff and “Chip” and one sister Melissa Sigmon, all of whom live out of state. Mike graduated from the University of South Florida in December of 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. While at USF, he met his future wife Heather Giddens and was mar-ried on December 28, 1996. Then Mike headed to Samford Univer-sity to receive his doctor of pharmacy degree in May of 2002. Mike and Heather attend First Baptist Church of Morristown.

Mike has worked in several pharmacies over the years and says, “As an owner of an independent pharmacy, I feel it is an opportunity to serve and help others where a corporate setting would not allow that same level of care.”

With a future full of dreams and plans, McFarland Group Inc. will be making their next step forward to the downtown area of Morristown in the early part of 2008. Randy and Mike were able to purchase and renovate a large building at 167 W. Main Street. The men are looking forward to the numerous accommodations that the new building will have for the friends and families McFarland already has as custom-ers and look forward to serving new clients in 2008. The downtown building has 2 entrances, one from Main Street and one from the backside of the building which is linked to a large parking lot with easy access to the new location. Randy and Mike said, “In recent years, other businesses have moved downtown and we would look forward to adding to the chemistry they have already created. We would like to add our portion of the economic pie.”

During a recent horse show in White Pine, my father began experiencing a heart attack. He had severe chest pain, excessive

sweating, and a history of a significant cardiac history. I asked where the nearest facility was with an ON-SITE CATH LAB

and intervention and was told Morristown-Hamblen. I told them, then that s̓ where we are going as fast as we can get there!!

The care in the ER was not only EFFICIENT, but also STATE-OF-THE-ART and all treatment was done according to established

protocols and national standards! The cath lab personnel arrived within minutes and he was on his way to cath lab.

The physicians, both in the ER and the Cardiologist, were accurate and obviously EXPERTS IN THEIR FIELDS.

I just can t̓ express in the appropriate words the care my father received in CCU. I travel all over the US and world and

I have been in almost every major medical facility in the country as well as hundred s̓ of rural and community hospitals.

Your nurses are at the top of their profession. They could work anywhere, but I am so glad they chose to work at

Morristown-Hamblen. You are one facility that can back up the claim of a “cardiac center of excellence.”

Please let everyone know from the beginning to end how much we appreciate all they did.
