HELLO JOBURGERS!

People make the city

For compiling this July issue, I’ve had the pleasure of meet-ing some of the entrepreneurs, business owners, chefs, designers and creatives who make Joburg Joburg. They’re dynamic, interesting and inspiring – just the way we, here at Hello Joburg, feel our city is.

Nic Proxenos, chef and owner of Sophia’s Bistro in Illovo, was welcoming to his restaurant and generous with his time. He and his staff are wholeheartedly invested in giving patrons an experience at his restaurant that they won’t easily forget.

I spent an afternoon chatting to Dan Sermand, one of the owners of The Orbit jazz club in Braamfontein. He was passionate in telling the story about how The Orbit came to be and the carefully thought-out concept behind the

club – a concept “that would lead the way in offering the best possible creative expression platform for jazz musicians in Joburg”.

I met Ayman Eshak, a co-owner of Il Barbierie in Dunkeld. This barber shop has been around for 49 years, originally started by an Italian (Antonio Folgore) and now owned by his daughter-in-law, Manuela, and Ayman. While we drank authentic Egyptian coffee, Ayman proudly explained to me the art and skill that goes into giving a ‘clean shave’.

You can read about a fun show to look forward to in our feature on Joburg Theatre’s Monty Python’s Spamalot. We interview the lead actor and actress, and director. Norman Anstey, Michelle Botha and Simon James tell us what they love best about living in Joburg. For a night filled with laughter, book a ticket to this funniest musical of all time!

We hope you enjoy this issue and feel inspired about all that the vibrant city in which we live has to offer.

I’d love to hear from you. If you have a moment drop me an email and let me know your thoughts.

Enjoy!#lovejozi

4 JUNE – 13 JULYMISSING

Missing is a new South African work by the multi-award winning writer, direc-tor and actor, John Kani. It tells the story of an exiled comrade who returns to South Africa with his Swedish wife and engaged daughter. Expecting to take up an illustrious new career in the newly democratic government, he finds an unexpected rival in one of his closest ex-comrades. Missing raises several important issues faced by those who went into exile and who hoped to be recalled by the ANC to join the government and take up a new life in a now democratic South Africa.

this once-in-a-lifetime experience. This

internationally acclaimed travelling

exhibition was set to close its doors on

22 June, but organisers have bowed

to public demand and extended it by a

further five weeks until 27 July.

“We have been overwhelmed by the

reception Da Vinci – The Genius has

received in Gauteng,” says Tyrone

Thöle, managing director of Great

World Exhibitions, the local organisers

and promoters responsible for bringing

the exhibition to South Africa.

This exhibition brings to life the genius

of Leonardo as an inventor, artist, sci-

sculptor and all-round Renaissance

thinker. The hundreds of exhibits on

display include large touchscreen

versions of Leonardo’s famous codices

(notebooks), life-size machine inven-

elusive Mona Lisa painting ever made.

Together they showcase the true depth

of Leonardo’s abilities and appeal to
