The City of Cape Town is once again proud to be a partner of the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival. The City is a proactive supporter of initiatives that create opportunities for prosperity for local talent.

We have made a substantial sponsorship contribution to ensure that the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival continues to grow in stature by attracting more comedy superstars and large audiences.

This event has evolved from a regional comedy festival into one of the highlights of the City’s exciting calendar of entertainment events. The calibre of comedians it now attracts is a sign that the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival is one of the prime comedy events in the country.

Over the last 10 years, the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival has been the springboard for local emerging comedians to launch their careers. I hope that this year will also continue with this tradition by creating the platform for one more local emerging comedian to launch their successful career.

The 10th anniversary of the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival coincides with our second decade of democracy which I am confident has given all comedians lots of material to thrill the audience with.

I would like to congratulate the organisers for their hardwork in putting together a formidable line-up of comedians for the 2014 edition of the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival.

Executive Mayor Patricia de Lille

Welcome to the 10th Jive Cape Town Funny Festival. Your support over the years has made this comedy project the largest of its type in the country and well respected in the international arena.

Something special happened last year when we introduced Jive to the Festival and changed its logo to incorporate the city’s name. The project has been embraced by the community and night after night I am humbled by the amount of people who stream into the Baxter Theatre to support live comedy.

This year, we have assembled another top class group of comedians. The celebration of our 10th anniversary, allows us to celebrate the local great exponents of the art form.

Marc, Riaad and Nik have become household names over the years. They have used their talent to pursue interests in the artistic realm in film, TV and radio. They need to be applauded. Each of them has performed on the Festival stage on numerous occasions; some have worked with me from as early as 1997. They perform on the Funny Festival for a week each (please note their respective dates in this programme).

Cape Town’s popularity looms large at present and including the city’s name in the event title

has elevated our visibility and status abroad. Each international comic who has come to the Festival over the last decade leaves as an ambassador of the Festival, an ambassador of Cape Town and of the Western Cape.

To this end, the New Kings Hotel, the City of Cape Town, Cape Town Tourism, Wesgro, Aquila Private Game Reserve, Cape Whale Coast, VW Claremont and SAN Parks play a vital part.

Imagine going home to Brisbane or wet London and telling folk that while performing on the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival you saw the Big Five at Aquila, overnighted at Cape Agulhas National Park on the most southern tip of the continent, saw whales at Hermanus, stayed at the most hospitable and comfortable hotel in the city, travelled on the Red Bus, hiked up Table Mountain and performed to twenty thousand people over thirty packed shows!

Finally, my sincere thanks to all our sponsors, including new supporters DHL, for making the project so successful and to Sean Burton and Sharief Parker of Jive for their vision and enthusiasm.

Enjoy the show and thanks for supporting the Funny Festival.

Sean Burton is a FMCG and beverage marketing veteran, whose leadership and vision delivers consistent, year-on-year sales growth. As Head of Marketing, he is fully accountable for all marketing, advertising and public relations activities and reports directly to the CEO, Sharief Parker, at Quality Beverages.

Sean manages a stable of well-known brands, including the cooldrink that Western Cape families have adopted as their beverage of choice - Jive!

He is an innovator and consistently challenges the status quo. Jive has gained a reputation for being an avid supporter of the community, with projects including the Jive Slave Route Challenge, Jive Touch Rugby Tournament, Jive Boland T20, various Jive feeding schemes, development sports clubs within the various sporting codes and many, many others… as we suspected, Sean has confirmed that there’s no slowing down. Sean goes on to explain how important it is for Quality Beverages to support the community, citing important charities such as the Red Cross Children’s Hospital Trust, which receives a portion of the sale of every bottle of Jive cooldrink sold! Now there’s something to smile about!

Not only does Quality Beverages support the community with countless, deserving causes, they’re also involved with many “laughable”

ones…. like the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival. Sean explains, “Like Jive’s cooldrinks, comedy adds some excitement and flavour into our lives. These moments of laughter remind us of what is important in life, like: 1. Loving and enjoying your family and friends; 2. Being good to your mother-in-law… or else… 3. Trying a new flavour of Jive every so often, breaks the monotony of a life saturated with boring over-priced cooldrinks; and 4. Number 3 is VERY important!” He goes on to say, “Arts and culture is not just about the economic value for our creative industries, but it is what defines us as a community. Capetonians have always had a keen sense of humour and laughter has been our saving grace while on an often bumpy ride on our road to a new South Africa.”

But enough of the serious stuff, we are here to enjoy life, be entertained, to laugh and to drink Jive! So with this, we say:

Quality Beverages is delighted to be a partner to the Funny Festival along with the City of Cape Town and the other associate sponsors. So: “Raise a Jive in the air, like you just don’t care…. and drink a big gulp for Cape Town, the people of South Africa, and the entire Jive community!”

Enjoy the 10th Jive Cape Town Funny Festival with us…my masekind!

Schalk Bezuidenhout was born in Gauteng in the wonderful city of Johannesburg. Even though this sounds very contemporary, he grew up in a very Afrikaans, ‘bring-terug-Apartheid’ town right next to the airport. His family and friends stood back as they watched Schalk evolve from an Afrikaans conservative caterpillar into a beautiful drama-queen butterfly, complete with a moustache and furry afro.

Schalk is not afraid to say it like it is and talks about how he perceives things through his De la Rey spectacles. On stage he is fun and energetic and appeals to people of all kinds and colours (and yes, even black people. As a matter of fact, especially black people!).

Schalk has come a far way in the short amount of time that he has been doing comedy. He has had the privilege to perform at some great venues, alongside some even greater comedians. In his short career, Schalk has won many industry awards and is destined for the big time.

Christian Lindemann lives in Frankfurt and travels the globe.

In 2007, Christian Lindemann re-introduced the forgotten art of pickpocketing to his routine. This secret tradition, practised in many of the major cities of the world, quickly caught the attention of many theatre and

festival producers.

Christian had vaulted the ancient art into the spotlight and it was’nt long before he was approached by Cirque DU SOLEIL and became a focal point of their show.

His routine, aptly called “I Steal All” saw Christian tour with CIRQUE DU SOLEIL in North America and Japan. He has just completed their tour of Europe where her performed twice daily to an audience of 2 500.

During his time on stage Christian has stolen everything from unsuspecting people. Bill Gates “lost his shirt” to Christian, not literally, but certainly his watch, mobile, and keys!!

During his funny pickpocket performance, he not only relieves the guests of their watches, wallets, glasses, mobile phones – he also steals their ties, their belts, and even their socks!

Christian is in great demand globally and has become one of the top comedy speciality acts on the international circuit, including the following great festivals;

In 2009, Ward brought her award-winning “Ugly As A Child Variety Show” to the Adelaide Fringe, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the Sydney Comedy Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Ward was nominated for Best Newcomer at the 2009 Melbourne Interna-tional Comedy Festival F and won Mervyn Stutter’s Spirit of the Fringe Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

In September 2009, Ward appeared at the Melbourne Fringe Festival with a new show - “Felicity Ward reads from The Book of Moron”. She performed the show at the 2010 Adelaide Fringe, Brisbane Comedy Festival and Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

2011 saw Ward appear in front of sell-out crowds with her critically acclaimed show, “Honestly,” culminating in winning Best Local Act at the Time out Sydney Comedy Festival Awards 2011. She was also named in the

Sydney Morning Herald’s Top 10 comedy shows for 2011, was the face of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and garnered four star reviews all over the country. She toured internationally: to Hong Kong and Singapore, with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow, and to New Zealand, with the Comedy Convoy.

Her new show, “The Hedgehog Dilemma”, was performed at the 2012 Adelaide Fringe Festival and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival with sell-out seasons and nominated Best Comedy at both festivals. It was then performed the Sydney Comedy Festival and Perth Comedy Festival where she won Best Australian Act at both festivals. Felicity performed the show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2012.

Yosuke Ikeda comes from Osaka Japan. He presents a totally new and novel style of performance blending mime with graphics and acoustic arts.

”Hello Goodbye” is one of his well-known pieces based on the famous song by the super group, The Beatles. The lyrics of the song appear in many different ways synchronized to music, added together and culminating cleverly and beautifully to a surprize at the end.

The segment he performs in Cape Town is only a small part of his full length show. All his work is based on juggling, pantomime and magic techniques, performed to perfection.

Yosuke is a silent performer and uses no language, which makes his act perfect for all ages and travels very well.

Yosuke Ikeda has performed in many street festivals, comedy theatres and clubs around the world, always to great acclaim.

Mario is the creation and alter ego of Clarke McFarlane, a New Jersey-born and New York City-schooled performer. First developed for the Off-Broadway hit Planet Banana, the character of Mario went solo in 2005 with his outdoor international festival show.

Mario: Queen Of The Circus quickly became a festival favourite and has toured solidly since its inception. Clarke performs Mario in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish and has done so from Eurasia to the Antipodes.

Competitions in the arena of artistic accomplishment are always complete nonsense…...unless you win! Here are some fair and objectively distributed prizes from around the world that Mario has won:

The close connection between Good Hope FM and comedy is evident in their continued efforts to shine a spotlight on local talent through on-air exposure. Teaming up with the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival and Jou Ma Se Comedy Club was a natural step for the radio station in their search for Cape Town’s next top

comic. As creators of the annual Laugh Master competition, which takes place in the lead-up to the festival, Good Hope FM continue’s to provide a platform to promote local comedy talent within the community. The

winner of Good Hope FM Laugh Master gets an exclusive performance on the main stage at this year’s Jive Cape Town Funny Festival.

Laugh Master is open to any aspiring comedians to enter, as long as you are funny (not crude!) and do not currently earn an income from comedy, the aim is to promote new, up-and-coming talent. The previous

two Laugh Master competitions uncovered two of Cape Town’s funniest unknowns;

Good Hope FM is Cape Town’s leading music focused interactive lifestyle radio station, whose Contem-porary Hit Radio format provides a music mix of R&B, Pop, Hip Hop, Dance and South African Music. The Good Hope FM footprint covers Cape Town surrounding towns and villages and the Overberg, targeting

young, global, routed and now generation listeners. The station has a target audience of LSM 6-9, 19 – 29 year olds.

Top South African stand-up comic Nik Rabinowitz is not only very funny, he also has a list of achievements the likes of which many can only aspire to. For instance, he once posed nude. Not because anyone asked him to, he just did it. He represented South Africa at the Jewish Olympics, which is like the normal Olympics, but with more dentists and accountants. Most impressively, he is universally agreed to be the finest Xhosa- speaking Jewish stand-up comedian in the entire world.

Nik was raised on the mean, green streets of Constantia, Cape Town, a world of ride-bys, piano lessons, and unrelenting love and financial support from family members. Despite all this hardship he still managed to be moderately successful, winning South African stand up of the year in 2008.

Over the past ten years Nik has established himself as one of the country’s premier comics. International performances have included the UK, Holland, Australia, Canada, and the USA. He's been a guest on BBC 2's Mock the Week (2011), performed at the Royal Albert Hall and intentionally driven on the wrong side of the road in Nigeria.

Aside from all this, Nik’s major claim to fame is that he was born in a stable, and is one of only two Jewish boys in the last two thousand years to have done so.

Nik Rabinowitz Riaad Moosa

@nikrabinowitz @RiaadMoosa

Doctor Riaad Moosa is an award-winning comedian, presenter, writer and actor; and happens to be a qualified medical doctor as well! He is the host of SABC3’s Health and Wellness television programme ‘Doctors Orders’ and recently starred as Ahmed Kathrada in Anant Singh’s epic Oscar and Golden Globe nominated movie ‘Mandela – Long Walk to Freedom.’

Riaad originally flexed his comedic and dramatic acting muscles when he played the lead in the internationally acclaimed movie ‘Material’ (also co-written by Riaad), which continues to inspire audiences all over South Africa and Film festival audiences all over the world.

Riaad Moosa won the SAFTA (South African Film and Television Award) for Best Actor for his role in ‘Material’, which also received SAFTA’s for Best Film, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor in 2013. His most recent standup comedy tour in 2013, also called ‘Doctor’s Orders’, was one of the biggest tours of his career, performing to over 35 000 people all over South Africa and Africa.

Moosa, one of the country’s most popular and acclaimed funnymen with a style all his own, is known as “the Comedy Doctor”, and he certainly seems to have the remedy for the nation’s ills at the moment: a healthy dose of laughter, straight up – hold the aspirin.

Hello Cape Town 20

Remember the iconic names of Cape Town comedians of old like Pip Friedman and Tolla van der Merwe or the Biltong and Pot Roast television series which had families huddled in front of their TV sets every week in search of their weekly fix of laughter.

Comedy and Cape Town humour fit like a glove. I’ll be the first to admit that though the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival is very important on the comedy calendar of the city and that it dominates the winter comedy scene, comedy in Cape Town however, is synonymous with Kurt Schoonraad ‘s Jou Ma Se Comedy Club.

As the name suggests, ‘Jou Ma Se Comedy Club’ has had Cape Town and its visitors laughing locally for several years! Late last year, Kurt took the bold step of relocating to a historical landmark, The Pumphouse at the V&A Waterfront, Jou Ma Se Comedy Club is Cape Town’s only dedicated comedy venue and the hub of home-grown South African talent.

Kurt Schoonraad, started his comedy career in 1999. He was vaulted to national recognition through the travel series, Going Nowhere Slowly, which quickly developed a cult following. Kurt’s comedy club followed in 2005. The V&A Waterfront itself was home to the conceptualisation of Jou Ma Se Comedy Club in 2005, at The Cape Town Festival, where comedy acts were first show-cased at Manenberg’s Jazz Café. The club then moved to The Albert Hall in Woodstock (2007 - 2010) and then to The River Club in Observatory until October 2013.

The Pumphouse hosts the best the comedy world has to offer (Wednesday to Sunday), with both local and internationally iconic comedians gracing its stage. In addition to this world-class entertainment, patrons can enjoy great food, relax, laugh and just have fun in a safe, upmarket environment. The website: www.joumasecomedy.com has all the information you need to know about booking shows, comedians, venue etc.

Since 2012, Jou Ma Se Comedy Club has been hosting the Good Hope FM Laugh Master competition in search of Cape Town’s next top comic. The prize is an exclusive performance on the Main Stage at the JiveCape Town Funny Festival and is a platform for aspiring comedians to brush shoulders with establishednames in the comedy industry. Besides Jou Ma Se Comedy Club being Cape Town’s premium comedyvenue, running comedy from Wednesday to Sunday every week, there are also a few permanent monthly gigs and some weekly ones run by local comedians all around the city!

Facebook and Twitter is the best place to watch for events and information about what’s on where but it’s worth mentioning some here:- Sundays: Armchair Theatre (Observatory) and Assembly (Cape Town) Monday at Beefcakes (Greenpoint) and Assembly (Cape Town). Tuesdays: Premium Sports Bar (Westridge, Mitchellsplain) and HQ (Cape Town), Improv Comedy runs Wednesdays at Mercury (Cape Town).

Yes, the Cape Town comedy circuit is alive!

Budding comedians should visit The Armchair Theatre in Lower Main Road, Observatory on Sunday nights where they’ll be given some stage-time, advice, guidance and input from comedians in the industry. Alternatively, enter the next Good Hope FM Laugh Master competition and perhaps become Cape Town’s next top comic! Contact Nelson de Gouveia at the Armchair Theatre on [email protected]

The Cape Town Funny Festival opens in London in October this year. Start sending the emails, get the social

media working and let’s inject “a bit of joy” into the homesick Capetonians in

the United Kingdom.

Since the advent of democracy in South Africa, Cape Town has quickly become one of the world’s top tourist

destinations. Not a month passes without the city being nominated as one of the best places on the planet to visit.

Cape Town is known for its large events, such as the the Minstrel Carnival, Cape Argus, Pick n Pay, Momentum Cycle

Tour, the Cape Epic, the Two Oceans Marathon, the Cape Town International Jazz Festival and the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival,

not to mention its spectacular scenery, world-class wines and diverse cultures.

The Cape Town Funny Festival is the country’s flagship comedy festival, celebrating the city, its many cultures and sense of humour. Archbishop

Emeritus Desmond Tutu has graced its stage on numerous occasions, sharing his wit, laughter and wisdom with the audience.

The E3 Group, one of London’s largest entertainment specialists, has partnered Cape Town Funny Festival director and comedy

entrepreneur, Eddy Cassar Public Relations, in staging the Cape Town Funny Festival in London at the Wimbledon Theatre from 23-25

October 2014.

The Festival intends showcasing the cultural tapestry and diversity of Cape Town, portraying it as a multi-cultural, inclusive city with

many opportunities.

The line-up includes Cape Town’s top performers, including Marc Lottering, Nik Rabinowitz, Alan Committie, Tumi

Morake,Siv Ngesi, “Cape Town Roving ambassador”, Kev Orkian and Carl Wastie.

Tickets are available from www.atgtickets.com.

So tell everyone who is stuck in grey London, dreaming of CapeTown, that the Cape Town Funny Festival is heading their way.

Over the years, numerous local and international comedians have graced the Funny Festival stage and have left the Festival as ambassadors for the city of Cape Town and the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival.

All are in regular contact with us in some form, either wanting to return or recommending someone to us. Many have hit the big time. More recently comedy pianist Kev Orkian, who has visited for the last four years, is on his way to super stardom. South African Trevor Noah, whose face graces billboards in London, New York and Edinburgh, still refers to the Funny Festival with fondness.

Julia Morris, who had the courage to accept my invitation for the first Funny Festival in 2005, is a huge celebrity and TV host in her native Australia. The previous festivals I produced way back from 1997 to 2004, saw a young and unknown Jimmy Carr, who had just resigned from BP to pursue his new comedy career, grace this stage. Lee Mack, now of great fame on BBC and Ross Noble who fills stadia around the world, were also on these Festivals.

Here are the comics who have appeared on the Funny Festivals over the last 10 years. I trust their names bring a smile to your face.
