Introduction

• Why a vaccination?

• What is a safety culture?

• Can training be the safety culture vaccination?

• Questions and Discussion

MMR Vaccine

Vaccination to fight three childhood diseases (measles, mumps, and rubella). Since the 1970s, it has virtually wiped out these very common childhood diseases in the US.

Here is how it works….

Vaccinate the new and young

Provide boosters at regular intervals

Never been vaccinated? Never too old!

“Safety Vaccination?”

Let’s use the MMR vaccine as an example. The three diseases we

need to fight:

Poor Safety Culture

Lack of a Plan

Lack of Participation

Page 13: HeliExpo 2015: Training . . . A Safety Vaccination

What is a Safety Culture?

Page 14: HeliExpo 2015: Training . . . A Safety Vaccination

What does this mean?

Page 15: HeliExpo 2015: Training . . . A Safety Vaccination

Stop!

Does everyone have a plan?

How about an SMS?

(Safety Management System)

Page 18: HeliExpo 2015: Training . . . A Safety Vaccination

What is an SMS? •A structured means of safety risk management decision making •A means of demonstrating safety management capability before system failures occur •Increased confidence in risk controls though structured safety assurance processes •A safety promotion framework to support a sound safety culture

Everyone Must Participate

Vaccines are not effective in eradicating diseases unless everyone uses

them…we will not eradicate helicopter accidents until everyone is on board

with the process.

Get the Word Out!!

•Train safety culture

•Train risk avoidance and safety processes

•Train technical skills

Page 21: HeliExpo 2015: Training . . . A Safety Vaccination

“THE INITIAL SHOT”

AB INITIO TRAINING

• Utilizes a Safety Management Systems (SMS).

• Set the right example….even when you think nobody is watching. Always follow the rules!

• Primacy for standards! (Wear a helmet?)

• Teach responsibility.

• Set levels of acceptability high!

• Be Professional!

Page 22: HeliExpo 2015: Training . . . A Safety Vaccination

“THE BOOSTER”

RECURRENT TRAINING

• Reinforce the importance of following the rules!

• Revise standards and procedures.

• Reiterate that YOU are responsible.

• “Bad” things do happen to “good” pilots

• Review, review, and review some more.

Page 23: HeliExpo 2015: Training . . . A Safety Vaccination

“ANOTHER BOOSTER”

MISSION TRAINING

• Inherent risks!

• Safe procedures and CRM

• Operating the aircraft within its limitations

• Specialized training for special mission equipment

• Knowing when to say “no.”

Page 24: HeliExpo 2015: Training . . . A Safety Vaccination

HOW OFTEN DO YOU TRAIN?

• Initially.

• Regularly.

• When needed.

• When regulations dictate.

• When you start to get it wrong.

Page 25: HeliExpo 2015: Training . . . A Safety Vaccination

…..but is it ever enough?

Page 26: HeliExpo 2015: Training . . . A Safety Vaccination

Summary

Let’s “vaccinate” for safety…we have the vaccines…

•Good Safety Culture

•Safety Management

•Everyone participates through training
