    RegardlessalikeofToddie'sdesires,ofBudge'sopinion,andthecessationofhisregard,Iperformedahastytoilet.Notnwithstandingmylostrest,savagelythankedtheLordforSunday;atchurch,atleast,Icouldbefreefrommytormentors.Atthebreakfast-tablebothboysinvitedthemselvestoaccompanymetothesanctuary,butIdeclinedwithoutthanks.Totakethemmightbetoassistsomewhatinteachingthemoneofthebestofhabits,butIstronglydoubtedwhethertheseverestProvidencewouldconsideritmydutytoenduretheprobableconsequencesofsuchanattempt.BesidesIMIGHTmeetMissMayton.IbothhopedandfearedImight,andIcouldnot,endurethethoughtofappearingbeforeherwiththecausesofmypleasantREMEMBRANCE.BudgeprotestedandToddiewept,butIremainedfirm,althoughIwassowillingtogratifytheirreasonabledesiresthatItookthemoutforalongante-servicewalk.WhileenjoyingthislittletripIdelightedthechildrenbykillingasnakeandspoilingaslendercaneatthesametime,myownsoleconsolationcomingfromthediscoverythattheremainsofthestaffweresufficienttomakeacaneforBudge.WhilereturningtothehouseandpreparingforchurchIenteredintoasolemnagreementwithBudge,whowasusuallyrecognizedastheheadofthisfraternalpartnership.

    Budgecontracted,forhimselfandbrother,tomakenoattemptstoentermyroom;torefrainfromfighting;toraiseloosedirtonlywithashovel,andtoconveyittoitsdestinationbymeansotherthantheirownhatsandaprons;topicknoflowers;toopennowater-faucets;toreferalldisagreementstothecook,asarbitrator,andtobuildnohousesofthenewbookswhichIhadstackeduponthelibrarytable.InconsiderationofthepromisedfaithfulobservanceoftheseconditionsIagreedthatBudgeshouldbeallowedtocomealonetoSabbathschool,whichconveneddirectlyaftermorningservice,hetostartonlyafterMaggiehadpronouncedhimdulycleansedandclothed.AsToddiewasdailykeptinbedfromeleventoone,IfeltthatImightsafelyworshipwithoutdistractingfears,forBudgecouldnotalone,andina
