Onethingwascertain,atanyrate:sleepwasnolongerpossible;soIhastilydressed,andwentintothegarden.Amongthebeautyandthefragranceoftheflowers,andinthedeliciousmorningair,Isucceededinregainingmytemper,andwasdelighted,onansweringthebreakfast-bell,twohourslater,tohaveBudgeaccostmewith:--
"Why,UncleHarry,wherewasyou?Welookedalloverthehouseforyou,andcouldn'tfindaspeckofyou."
Thebreakfastwasanexcellentone.IafterwardlearnedthatHelen,dearoldgirl,hadherselfpreparedabilloffareforeverymealIshouldtakeinthehouse.Asthetabletalkofmyselfandnephewswasnotsuchascoulddoharmbybeingrepeated,IrequestedMaggie,theservant,towaituponthechildren,andIaccompaniedmyrequestwithasmalltreasurynote.Relieved,thus,ofallresponsibilityforthedreadfulappetitesofmynephews,Ididfulljusticetotherepast,andevenregardedwithsomeinterestandamusementtheindustryofBudgeandToddiewiththeirtinyforksandspoons.Theyaterapidlyforawhile,butsoontheirappetitesweakenedandtheirtongueswereunloosed.
