Upon hearing this, my imagination treated me to images of pine trees falling over and the windows in my home shattering under the force of such severe gales. I imagine my family huddled in a windowless closet, trying to stay warm until the worst has passed and we can begin repairing the damage done by the angry west wind and I chuckled, comfortable in the notion that such disaster is unlikely and just one of the scare tactics so oſten employed by newscasters to boost ratings. But then I thought about it a bit more; this re- ally isn’t a joke at all. Not long ago I was talking to a coworker who told me of how he has had to keep his furnace constantly full of fire wood, lest his home’s temperature drop dangerously and cause his family undue distress. You can actually feel a breeze near some of his windows - even before the weekend’s expected blasts - and what he has had to spend on firewood and natural gas is staggering. Worse, I know his story is hardly a unique one. All too many Montanans are facing the coldest part of the winter – usually February – with windows that are hardly up to the task of keeping the house warm; my wallet cringes, in empathy. What is a homeowner to do? Well, the National Resource Defense Council would suggest that, among other things, replac- ing your windows as a good start. much of a diff erence.”

But, times are tight and many of us don’t have the budget to make this kind of home improvement. Well, there’s good news there, too. Energy.gov (the Environmental Protection Agency’s website) estimates that most homes will recoup the cost of a window replacement within 3-5 years, just off the reduction in power costs alone and which says nothing of the increased value to your home itself.

“We can really fi t it [a window replace-ment] to anybody’s budget. If you are just looking for a basic upgrade to make your home comfortable, fi ne. If you decide you

want to go historically correct or you want a specifi c color on the outside, it can all be done.” Tax credits are even available to help cover the product costs. “What you’re really buying is comfort,” says Rusty.

With the weather we’ve been seeing this winter, that is no small thing. It’s hard to get peace of mind when below-zero tem-peratures and hurricane-force winds have you worried about how you will keep your family warm. So, call the guys at ProBuild and let them make your home a more comfortable place to be at any time of year: 442-7110 or at their store at 1000E. Lyndale Ave, in Helena.

HOLLYWOOD -- As Chris Pine waits to fi lm the third “Star Trek” movie, due out in 2016, he’s taking on another franchise. He’ll be Jack Ryan in the $80 million “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” being directed by Kenneth Branagh. Pine has big shoes to fi ll. Alec Baldwin played Jack Ryan in 1990’s “Th e Hunt for the Red Octo-ber” (gross $200 million); in 1992 and 1994, Harrison Ford did “Patriot Games” (gross $178 million) and “A Clear and Present Danger” (gross $300 million); and in 2002, Ben Affl ick played Ryan in “Th e Sum of All Fears” (gross $194 million). Th is “Recruit” has a lot to live up to.

NBC must be having deja vu replac-ing Jay Leno as host of “Th e Tonight Show” again. Jimmy Fallon, who re-placed Conan O’Brien on “Late Night” fi ve years ago when NBC fi red Leno, only to bring him back, debuts Feb. 17. Jay is mum, but rumors persist he’s being wooed by other networks like CNN, which is making NBC lose sleep

again!***

Jerry Weintraub, who produced the Liberace biopic “Behind the Candela-bra” for HBO, will next do the same for Mae West. Director William Fried-kin, who won an Oscar for “Th e French Connection” and a Golden Globe for “Th e Exorcist,” will have Bette Midler as Mae West. Harvey Fierstein who wrote “Torch Song Trilogy,” “La Cage Aux Folles” and “Kinky Boots,” based his screenplay on Mae’s book “Good-ness Has Nothing to Do With It.”In 1970, at 77, Mae personally inter-viewed men to play opposite her in “Myra Breckinridge.” One of those men was an unknown, out-of-work actor named Tom Selleck. In 1978, at 85, Mae starred in “Sextette” opposite the soon-to-be James Bond, Timothy Dalton. Because she had trouble hear-ing, she wore a hearing aid that fed her

lines. A news helicopter interfered with her reception, causing her to give the traffi c report instead of her lines. In 1969, critics said Barbra Streisand did Mae West when she played Dolly Levi in “Hello Dolly.” Th e following year brought “Dinah East,” in which Jeremy Stockwell played a 1950s movie queen who was actually a man. In 1982, Ann Gillian played Mae West in a TV biopic bearing her name.I once saw Mae sitting in her limo at a gas station off Sunset Boulevard. She said she wanted her fans to see her so they could grow old together. She passed away in 1980 at 87, but her one-liners live on: “When women go wrong, men go right aft er them”; “A man in the house is worth two in the street”; and “If I make it hard for you will you hold it against me? And hurry!” (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Where There’s Life, There’s Hope

Assume you’re in four spades and West leads a low heart. East collects two heart tricks and shift s to the jack of diamonds. How would you play the hand?Th e outlook is not good. It seems certain that you’ll lose a diamond and a club

and go down one. Of course, you might get lucky and catch the doubleton Q-J of clubs, but the 7 percent chance of this occurring doesn’t cheer you up much. But when you consider the matter further, a brighter prospect emerges. You might be able to make the contract via an elimina-tion play. So you win the diamond return with the king, draw three rounds of trumps and cash the A-K of clubs.Aft er the trumps and clubs both turn out to be divided 3-2, your chances of mak-ing four spades improve signifi cantly. You next cash the ace of diamonds, and then, with fi ngers crossed, you exit from dummy with a club. When East wins the trick

with the queen, which is what you were hoping for, the contract becomes a virtual certainty. Assuming East started with fi ve hearts for his overcall, he now has nothing but hearts left in his hand. When he returns one, you discard a diamond from one hand and ruff in the other to make four spades.Th e hand illustrates how a declarer can sometimes salvage what appears to be a hopeless contract. Th e key to success in such situa-tions is to try to picture an opposing distribution that would allow you to get home safely. More oft en than not, your hopes will go unrewarded, but occa-sionally the outcome will be a happy one.(c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

“Vivien Leigh: An Inti-mate Portrait”

by Kendra Bean (Run-ning Press, $30)Reviewed by Larry CoxIf Vivien Leigh had made only two fi lms, “Gone with the Wind” and “Streetcar Named Desire,” she still would have managed to achieve fi lm immortality. Her fi rst love was the stage, but it was her luminous in-tensity in motion pictures that helped establish her lasting reputation. When Vivien Leigh walked into a room, her aura triggered

a magnetism that drew people in and left them spellbound.Kendra Bean’s biography of Leigh is the fi rst to have utilized the Laurence Ol-ivier Archives that features an invaluable collection of personal letters and documents ranging from interview transcripts to fi lm contracts and even medical records. Because of this access, Bean’s book is the fi rst to examine in such intimate detail the fascinating, troubled and oft en misunderstood life of Leigh.Vivien Mary Hartley was born in 1913 in India, the daughter of a British military offi cer. When the Hartley family returned to England in 1931, Vivien was enrolled at the Royal

Academy Dramatic Arts in London. She married a barrister, Herbert Leigh Holman, a year later. Th e marriage didn’t last, but Vivien used his middle name professionally. Aft er several minor roles, she was cast in a play, “Mark of Virtue,” in 1935, and it was during its run that Vivien met Laurence Oliver. Th e chemistry between them was especially evident in their fi rst fi lm together, “Fire Over England” in 1937. Bean documents the highs and lows of Leigh’s life and career with clarity and sensitivity. Th e incredible images -- many published for the fi rst time, -- add just the right touch. Lattes & Sundaes Artist Profi le:

Sally Rogers Angove

Angove feels that it is important for the essence of the artist, as well as that of the subject, to show in her paintings. She works in several mediums, but primarily in watercolor because of challenge in al-lowing the medium to “do its own thing.” Her favor-ite subjects are fl orals, still lifes, landscapes, birds and small animals.

In recent years Angove has focused on miniature art which has been accepted into shows across the country and even earned her recognition interna-

tionally, being accepted by Th e Royal Miniature Soci-ety of Painters, Sculptors and Gravers of London, U.K., the oldest exhibition of miniature art in the world. Additionally, her miniatures were accepted into the World Feder-ation of Miniatures exhibition in Moscow, Russia.

Sally also en-joys the sim-plicity and philosophy of Sumi-e (oriental brush paint-ing). She has taught classes in this medium and does demon-strations for school children in addition to other groups and organizations.

She was an active member of the Helena Art Center for many years, serving as board secretary, offi ce

secretary and director for two years. She is one of the founding members of the Upper Missouri Art-ists Gallery in Downtown Helena, which has been in business for 17 years.

To further artistic growth, Angove annually at-tends work-shops taught by nationally known art-ists, tours art galleries in the United States as well as in other countries in order to expand her appreciation for all forms of art.

Today and throughout the rest of

2014, you can see her work on display in the warm, comfort-able setting of Lattes & Sundaes along with that of seven of Helena’s other premier artists.

Do you suff er from chronic joint or muscle pain or pain from arthritis or other infl ammatory diseases? Have you recently suff ered a sports injury that is not healing as quickly as you would like and is creating pain and discomfort? Are you having sleepless nights because of pain or just having trouble getting a good night’s sleep? Peak Wellness Clin-ic may have the answer for your pain and discomfort. We are proud to be the fi rst to introduce Helena to a new kind of therapy called PEMF – Pulse Elec-tro-Magnetic Field. At Peak Wellness Center we treat your health at the cellular level, where the origin of the problem occurs. Your cells are like tiny, little batteries. Each cell holds an electrical charge. When pain and infl ammation are present your cells are stressed, damaged, and need

repair. Th ese cells are using all of their energy to maintain just MINIMAL cell function. Th e batteries’ (cells’) electri-cal charges are low and need to be re-charged. Th e PEMF pulses a magnetic fi eld through every cell. Th at fi eld pass-

es through healthy cells, locating dam-aged ones. Th e pulses harmlessly pass through the cells’ membranes, which instantly aff ects the cells’ inner struc-tures, recharging the cells and restoring the proper cell voltage and optimal functional level of each cell.Th e foundation of pain, injury, and ill-health is an electrical imbalance. When the electrical imbalance is corrected the body can ultimately repair and defend itself from almost any dis-ease. Th e PEMF supports the cells’ need for prop-er electrical balance to regain or main-tain metabolic functions and optimal health. PEMF provides the essential energy needed to repair and rejuvenate. But don’t just take our word for it! Visit YouTube and see Dr. Oz’s segment on this new therapy (or visit the homep-age for the Dr. Oz show) and search for PEMF. Come to our clinic and experience advanced injury repair and whole body rejuvenation at 1111 N. Rodney St. suite 4, or call us at 495-1222.

SEND US YOUR RECIPENow that we’ve had a bit of a chance to get our feet wet, we at the Helena Shopping News are ready to start growing the scope of our publica on. It has al-ways been our intent to have our li le publica on be more of a community paper, bringing the Helena area together.

To that end, we would like to introduce our new fea-ture columnist: You! Nothing brings people together quite the way that food does, so every issue we would

like to feature a recipe from our readers: be it a holiday favorite, comfort food staple or the menu item that en ces the family to gather ‘round the table.

Each issue we will choose our favorite to show up in the Shopping News and then share your recipe with Helena. We look forward to featuring (and feeding) you!

Caramelized Onion, Rosemary,

& Mozzarella Crostini

Serves 6-8 | Veg

3 onions, cut into ½ rings

2 Tbsp Avocado Oil

1 tsp Sel Gris Sea Salt

½ tsp sugar

1 Tbsp Mediterranean Rub

¼ cup dry white wine

1 Tbsp Reserva Sherry Vinegar

1 crusty Italian baguette

3 Tbsp Wild Rosemary EV Olive Oil

½ lb fresh mozzarella cheese

1. In a large sauté pan, heat the avocado oil over medium heat. Add the onions, sel gris, sugar, and Mediterranean rub.

2. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, as the onions slowly caramelize and reduce, about 50-60 minutes.

3. Turn the heat up to medium high and add the wine to deglaze the pan. Stir in the sherry vinegar. Set aside.

4. Preheat the oven to 400°F.5. Cut the baguette into ¼” slices

and arrange on a baking sheet. Drizzle with rosemary olive oil

and bake until light brown in color, about 10 minutes.

6. Top each of the baguette slices with mozzarella cheese, cara-melized onions, and a pinch of Mediterranean rub. Return to the oven until the cheese is melted and golden in color, about 10 minutes. Enjoy!

Help Send Two and Reach Many Mother and son, Carol and Jeremiah Leggett, are raising money ($4,000) for a cause which will help many individ-uals increase, not only their quality of life, but also increase its meaning to them. Th ey will be part of a team going to El Salvador from Helena First Assembly of God Church. Th ey will be ministering through King’s Castle Ministries in El Salvador, doing a lot of street ministry, through programs with songs and dramas. Th e team will also will be ministering in churches at night. Th ey may do some construction or any other specialized ministry when needed. Th e focus while in El Salvador will be on children, most of who will see or be forced to participate in horrifi c gang related acts…unless they get the help they so desperately need. Th ese chil-dren need a way out; they need hope. Th rough this ministry, they will have

the opportu-nity to hear and learn about the Gospel, have needs met, and be able to share this hope with their families (we will also have time to minister to families). Carol and Jeremiah cannot be part of this team without your generous support. Please go to the King’s Castle website if you desire to learn more about this ministry. (www.kingscastle.org). To support us fi nancially, please go to our personal ministry site www.faithcasterradio.com and fi nd the “Donate to the El Sal-vador Mission” button and you can donate online. We thank you in advance for your careful thought and generosity.

Th e Short Version: A QR Code is a newer form of a bar code that is frequently used to pass information to a mobile device, gener-ally they pass on website URL’s or info that would be hard-unpleasant to type from the average keypad used on most mobile devices. Typical uses include launching websites, logging into Wi-Fi hotspots in public places or fi nding on-line coupons with your smart phone or tablet (the uses are potentially infi nite). So why should you care? In a nutshell it will make your mobile usage easier, and who doesn’t like easier? Plus you can get discounts from online coupons, and saving money is Good™.

Th e Long Version: HistoryTh e QR code system was invented in 1994 by Toyota’s subsidiary, Denso Wave. Its purpose was to track vehicles during manufacture; it was designed to allow high-speed component scanning. Although initially used for tracking parts in vehicle manufacturing, QR codes now are used in a much broader context, including both commercial tracking applications and conve-nience-oriented applications aimed at mobile phone users.

Uses Originally designed for industrial

uses, QR codes have become common in consumer advertising. Typically, a smartphone-tablet is used as a QR-code scanner, displaying the code and converting it to some useful form (such as a standard URL for a website, there-by obviating the need for a user to type it into a web browser). QR codes have become a focus in advertising, since it provides quick and eff ortless access to the advertiser’s website-information.Although initially used to track parts in vehicle manufacturing, QR codes are now (as of 2012) used over a much wider range of applications, including commercial tracking, entertainment and transport ticketing, product/loy-alty marketing (examples: mobile cou-poning where a company’s discounted and percent discount can be captured using a QR code decoder which is a mobile app, or storing a company’s information such as address and related information alongside its alpha-nu-meric text data as can be seen in Yellow

Pages directory), and in-store product labeling. Users may add a vCard contact to their device, open a Uniform Re-source Identifi er (URI), or compose an e-mail or text message aft er scan-ning QR codes.QR codes storing addresses and Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) may appear in magazines, on signs, on buses, on business cards, or on almost any object about which users might want information. Users with a camera phone equipped with the correct reader application can scan the image of the QR code to display text, contact information, connect to a wireless network, or open a web page in the mobile device’s browser. Recruiters have started placing QR codes in job advertisements, while applicants have started sporting it in their CVs and visiting cards. In June 2011, Th e Royal Dutch Mint issued the world’s fi rst offi cial coin with a QR code to celebrate the cen-tenary of its current building and premises. Th e coin can be scanned by a smartphone and link to a special website with contents about the historical event and design of the coin. In 2008, a Japanese stonemason an-

nounced plans to engrave QR codes on gravestones, allowing visitors to view information about the deceased, and family mem-bers to keep track of visits.

How to useQR codes can be used in Google’s Android, Black-Berry OS, Nokia Symbi-an Belle and Apple iOS devices (iPhone/iPod/iPad), as well as Microsoft ’s Windows Phone operating system, Google Goggles, 3rd party barcode scanners, and the Nintendo 3DS. Th e browser supports URL redirection, which allows QR codes to send metadata to existing applications

on the device. In Apple’s iOS, a QR code reader is not natively included, but several paid and free apps are available with both the ability to scan the codes and hard-link to an external URL. Google Goggles is an example of one of many applications that can scan and hard-link URLs for iOS and Android. BlackBerry 10 devices have a na-tive QR reader as well as several third party readers. Windows Mobile platform is able to scan QR codes through the Bing search app (I haven’t had much 1st hand experi-ence with windows phones, so I’m not sure what 3rd party apps are available).
