Sometsewu says many murders were linked to robberies and vigilan- te retaliation. He says the station’s active attempt to curb robberies vigi- lante behaviour contributed to the downward trend in murders. Sometwewu, however, says a fac- tor that contributed to the number of murders, common assault and as- sault with intention to do grievous bodily harm (GBH) was a spike in gang violence, especially in schools, late last year and early this year. Sometwewu says the police station was ably assisted by the Community Policing Forum, who created a com- mittee to address gang violence with great success. Since March there has not been a single incident of gang-re- lated violence in the Lwandle polic- ing precinct. In Macassar, however, murders have increased in the past year. Last year, there was a total of nine mur- ders in Macassar, while statistics for the period April 2012 to March 2013 indicate there were 13 murders in the Macassar polic- ing precinct. Station com- mander of the Macassar Police, Lt Colonel Errol Merkeur, says many of the murders in Macassar were alcohol-related. In their attempts to address this is- sue, the Macassar Police raid illegal shebeens on a weekly basis. He says that there is no gang activity in Ma- cassar and none of the murders are gang-related. “All incidents are isolated and not part of organised crime.” According to the latest statistics, there were 283 burglaries at residen- tial areas in the Macassar polic- ing precinct. Merkeur at- tributes this number to the drug problem in the area. There were 457 drug-related cases opened at Macassar police sta- tion. According to Africa Check, a non-profit organisation that pro- motes accuracy, an increase in drug- related crimes indicate “intensified police activity”, rather than an indi- cation of increased drug crimes. The community reports many drug-relat- ed activities, which the police follow up. Merkeur thanked the communi- ty for their input. Altogether 590 drug-related cases were opened in the Lwandle policing precinct, an increase from the 467 cases in the previous year. Sometwewu says this statistic re- flects the input of the Lwandle Police. He said with the help of information supplied by the community, Broad- lands Village which was previously a drug haven, now has minimal drug activity. Nomzamo gets a formal taxi rankDALEEN FOUCHÉ

Construction on the proposed upgrade ofthe Nomzamo taxi rank inMichael Streetis set to start early next year andwill pro-vide the first formal taxi rank forNomza-mo residents.

Ward Councillor Samual Matha, says thecurrent taxi rank was built as a temporarytaxi rank and is only an open piece of landwith no facilities. In the 2006–2007 financial year a proposed

upgrade of the facility was approved by theCity of Cape Town, but was never executed.

Matha says a revised proposal for the taxirank upgrade was approved by the City ofCape Town last year. An additional R5,5 mil-lion has been requested for the constructionbudget.Currently the project has an approved

budget of R5 million, but after a revised de-sign, endorsed by the project managementteam, the required budget is R10,5 million.According to a report, submitted to sub-

council 8, a motivation for the additionalfunding has been submitted to the PublicTransport Infrastructure and SystemsGrant(PTSIG), which is the approved fundingsource for theproject.Confirmationof thead-

justed budget is expected in January 2014.Construction is set to start early next year,

with a construction period of about ninemonths. The newly constructedMacassar taxi rank

was completed in August this year. Accord-ing to Councillor John Heuvel, theMacassartaxi rank which was officially opened on 18September, was funded by theDepartment ofTransport which gave R6,5milion over threefinancial years.Heuvel says the renovated taxi rank is

more formal and includes bathroom facili-ties.The design of the Nomzamo taxi rank in-

cludes public transport lanes, pedestrianwalkways and an urban forecourt, intendedas a community meeting place. The designfurther includes six structures for eateriesand a designated area for informal traders.Parkingbays, roadsandwalkwaysnext to thetaxi-rank will be rebuilt. In line with the City of Cape Town’s Envi-

ronmentalAgenda, greenbuildingprincipleswill be adopted where financially viable, in-cluding solar panels for energy generation.Matha says the upgraded taxi rank will

make the life of Nomzamo residents “mucheasier” and create jobs for unskilled labour-ers during the construction phase. The Nomzamo taxi rank will be upgraded at an estimated cost of R10,5 million. PHOTO: DELIAH BRINKHUIS

Police helpful when car broke downPolice helpful when car broke downI was filling up our Mercedes at the BP ServiceStation onMain Road – opposite Virgin Active,on Tuesday evening, 20 August, around 20:00when my husband called to tell me our Hondahad overheated and broken downwhile drivingup the Macassar off-ramp off the N2, travellingtowards Somerset West. As he could not raiseour mechanic on his mobile, he asked if I couldcome and help tow the car home.Onapproachingtheoff-ramp, Inoticedtwopo-

lice vehicles with their blue lights flashing. My heart skipped more than just one beat!Tomy relief, myhusbandwas standingunder

a street-lamp on the side of the road, with oneof the officers, waiting for me.As I was somewhat nervous of towing, espe-

cially at night, I asked if one of the officers couldpossibly assist us in towing our car home.

They all readily agreed and assisted with fit-tingthesteeltow-rope,escortingus,andsteeringthe Honda home behind my husband and I.To facilitate towing on Wednesday, we were

planning to leave the car on the roadside over-night, as we have a rather steep driveway intoour garage. Once again the officers advisedagainst it, informingus that car theft, especiallythis particular sought-after model, was on theincrease in our area at present. Many thanksonce again to them for advising and informingus. We would like to go on record in expressingour sincere gratitude most specifically to War-rant Officers Strydom, Hattingh, Vercuil, andConstableMichaels. They were extremely help-ful, very courteous, and all went more than justthatextramiletohelpus.Keepupthegoodwork.
