Lesers se kommentaarDWELMS IS GEMEENSKAPPE
Vang die druglords almal. Al drie my kin-ders is op dit. My lewe is verwoes.
Dit stel my egter so teleuras mede-inwoner van Macassar as ek sien hoeons gemeenskap se fasiliteite en sport geriewe
so gevandaliseer word.

SAPS too complacentWhilereading theHelderbergGazette, Iwas-veryhappytonoticethatcommonsensepre-vails in the answers on “lowering the agefor drinking alcohol by the youth”.I seriously hope that the readers’ com-
ments will be read by the authorities whowill make a decision and that the numberof “new voters” will not tilt the balance...It is indeed time that the authorities “adhoc” start to think about the well-being ofALL their citizens rather than their voternumbers! What bothers me more and more is the
complicity of the SAPS with the criminals! It isa fact, thathasbeenbrought to theatten-tion of the public by the Department of Jus-tice, thatanythreateningwitha firearm(re-al or false!) in an assault, robbery, criminaloffence, etc. will henceforth lead to a mini-mum of 10years jail sentence.Hence, whenapersonisassaulted, robbed
while threatened with a handgun, notwith-standing the declaration of the robbed per-son, the statement by the police is always
“robbery” and never stated as threatenedwith a firearm (real or false!).The SAPS officer who writes the docket
should know that by omitting this impor-tant fact, he makes himself an accompliceof the criminal. This is important information that is for-
gotten by the SAPS as well as by the public.JWJM (Hans) POOTGordon’s BaySgt Suzan Jantjies, spokesperson for the
Somerset West police responds:In all robbery cases that are reported to po-
lice, the members do make a note in the state-ment of the complainant of the method andinstrument used to commit an offence (suchas robbery).
Theweapon/ instrumentusedby theperpe-trator determines the type of robbery the po-lice has to register.
Without an instrument/weapon beingused, but only a verbal threat when some-thing is forcefully removed from a victim itwill only be a common robbery.
Working conditions questionedWorking conditions questionedMywifehasbeenjobhuntingfor fewmonths recently. Finally, a company In 2 Foods in
Strand contacted her to come in fortraining. On the first two days sheunderwent induction. The compa-ny’s rules and regulations were ex-plained to her.She then signed a two-week con-
tract towork from07:30 to 17:00 eachday. On the first day of her contractshe worked overtime until 21:00.This is when it was brought to herattention that employees are some-times needed to work overtime. The concern at the time was that
thereisnopublictransportthattimeof the night and the company doesnot provide transport or additionalbreaks. All the new recruits are women
and residing in Broadlands Park.Working until late at nightmeans
that the only way home for them isby walking past informal settle-ments where there are elementslurkingaroundwaiting on In 2Foodstaff, knowing the workers are aneasy target. Now that it has been discovered
that working overtime is a daily oc-currence, sometimes until 23:00, mywife’s safety is at risk by walkinghome that time of night.I advised her to resign, which she
did.Whenshedidnotreceiveherwa-ges on pay day, she went back to In2 Food to enquire what the reasonwas for them not paying her. Theytold her that her wages were heldback because she absconded, whichwasn’t the case.I personally spoke to a few work-
ers there and they all have samegrievances and more: harsh work-ing conditions, long working hourswithout decent breaks, hoursworked not paid accordingly.Aren’t there any labour laws that
protect people who are in dire needof work after being exploited by bigcompanies?A CONCERNED HUSBAND, Broadlands
