Contrast agents that are used in angiography :

Barium sulfate(only used in digestive tract) and Iodine solution.

Iodine solution can be organic or inorganic(side affect due to hyperosmolar solution is that

they deliver more iodine and which results in more dense X-ray effect.)

Choice of contrast agent: Iso osmolar non-ionic or hypo osmolar non-ionic(if iso is not

available)

Advers effects:

a.causes allergy(due to anaphylactoid reactions )

b.causes damage or disease to kidney.

FLUOROSCOPY :

The video signal from tv camera is processed by digital image processor and presented on

display.This technique is called fluoroscopy.Siemens fluoroscopy systems provide the capability for a wide range of applications, from

fluoroscopy, including gastro-intestinal and genito-urinary exams, to special procedures, to

routine radiographic work. The product selection also provides a choice of under-table or

over-table systems, depending on the customer's preference. Additionally, Siemens also

COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY:

Produces a video image that represents a trans axial slice taken through a patient.Sliceconsists of small boxes (.5.5mm).

No film is used in CT.(Detector is used here.)

Here detector as well as X-ray source,both rotates to collect attenuation information from

different angular positions.

Problems with traditional X-ray technique:

a.Objects with different size produce same attenuation and thus images are of same size.

b.If two objects are of different density and one lies in the path of another one ,smaller object

may not be visible at all.

In 1971,first CT scanner was made and siemens had introduced its first full body scanner in

MAGNETIC RESONANCE:

Procedure to probe nuclei in a non destructive manner.

Principle used: Each nucleus gives of different frequencies when placed in magnetic field ofdifferent strengths and vice-versa.

Gradients are used which are just like an electromagnet that can be turned on at specific times

during scan to alter magneticfield in given direction.

Four components are required :

Advantages of MRI :

Images are sharper. Soft tissues contrast No harmful radiation

Disadvantages:

A nuclear medicine technique which produces a 3-d image or map of functional process in

the body.The system detects a pair of gamma rays emitted indirectly by a positron emitting

Images are then reconstructed using computer analysis

CT scanners are used for imaging.

The combination of PET and CT is available. PET-CT combination gives metabolic as well
