HEIGHTS HYPE 1st September 2016 Newsletter No.16 Dear Parents, YR 1/2 TRANSPORT EXPO As part of the Yr 1/2 integrated curriculum focus, an expo was held this week, to showcase the outstanding projects completed by the students and their families this term. A collection of automobiles ranging from flying machines to land based vehicles was designed, constructed and presented, culminating in a grand parade on our synthetic turf area. I congratulate all children and their families for the outstanding craftsmanship demonstrated and the ingenuity in design of these vehicles. In speaking to a number of families at the expo, it was clear that many parents had enjoyed the experience and opportunity to be involved in this homework project, and to support their son / daughter with the task. I hope you enjoy the selection of photos included with this newsletter. CLASSROOM HELPERS Whilst parents in Yr 1/2 enjoyed their afternoon tea during the expo, the staff thanked all for their help and assistance throughout the term. Any assistance that can be provided in hearing children read, testing their words, working with small groups on set tasks and so on, is sincerely appreciated by the teachers. Each homestead will be holding expos in the up and coming weeks and utilising this time to thank parent helpers and to encourage others to be involved. Every effort contributes to the students’ learning, and makes a large difference overall. On behalf of all the staff, I thank all volunteers and helpers for their attendance, assistance and work in the school this term. Please know that it is much appreciated by us all. Our hats meet the Anti-Cancer standards to best protect the students from the harmful effects of the sun’s UV rays. It is good practice for your children to wear their hats when walking to and from school everyday. All students are required to wear a hat at recess, lunchtime, when on an excursion or outside at Sport to be sun smart. New hats are available from the school’s uniform shop for $10 if your child has lost theirs, or if the hat is well worn and in need of replacement. UNIFORM REMINDER Please note the requirements for footwear as per our school’s policy. Shoes are expected to be completely black with enclosed toes. Some students are becoming casual in their footwear and are not compliant. We are reminding all families of the expectation for all students to wear full school uniform at all times. Dear Parents,

YR 1/2 TRANSPORT EXPO

As part of the Yr 1/2 integrated curriculum focus, an expo was held this week,

to showcase the outstanding projects completed by the students and their

families this term. A collection of automobiles ranging from flying machines

to land based vehicles was designed, constructed and presented, culminating in

a grand parade on our synthetic turf area. I congratulate all children and their

families for the outstanding craftsmanship demonstrated and the ingenuity in design of these vehicles. In

speaking to a number of families at the expo, it was clear that many parents had enjoyed the experience and

opportunity to be involved in this homework project, and to support their son / daughter with the task. I hope

you enjoy the selection of photos included with this newsletter.

CLASSROOM HELPERS

Whilst parents in Yr 1/2 enjoyed their afternoon tea during the expo, the staff thanked all for their help and assistance

throughout the term. Any assistance that can be provided in hearing children read, testing their words, working with small

groups on set tasks and so on, is sincerely appreciated by the teachers. Each homestead will be holding expos in the up and

coming weeks and utilising this time to thank parent helpers and to encourage others to be involved. Every effort contributes

to the students’ learning, and makes a large difference overall. On behalf of all the staff, I thank all volunteers and helpers for

FATHERS DAY STALL

this weekend. I wish all dads a very special Fathers Day for this Sunday.

SUN SMART– HATS ON FROM 1 SEPTEMBER

As Spring commences, it is timely to remember our school’s Sun Smart policy

expecting all students to wear our school wide brim hats from 1 September to

the end of April 2017. Our hats meet the Anti-Cancer standards to best protect

the students from the harmful effects of the sun’s UV rays. It is good practice for

your children to wear their hats when walking to and from school everyday. All

students are required to wear a hat at recess, lunchtime, when on an excursion or

outside at Sport to be sun smart. New hats are available from the school’s

uniform shop for $10 if your child has lost theirs, or if the hat is well worn and

in need of replacement.

UNIFORM REMINDER

Please note the requirements for footwear as per our school’s policy. Shoes are

expected to be completely black with enclosed toes. Some students are

becoming casual in their footwear and are not compliant. We are reminding all

families of the expectation for all students to wear full school uniform at all

Have a wonderful weekend.

A message from the Assistant Principal. Jolly Phonics!

Last week on behalf of FHPS, Trish Hawkesworth, Jo Bosward and myself attended 2 days of professional development on Jolly Phonics and

Jolly Grammar.

Phonics is the sound system of the English language. The word PHONICS comes from the Greek Word PHONE meaning voice or sound -a

method of learning to read and write using the sounds letters make. Phonics is composed of single sounds-vowels and consonants, double

sounds and consonant blends. By learning phonics, children learn to decode the English Language and become empowered to be:

FLUENT, INDEPENDENT READERS AND WRITERS.

Research has demonstrated that a phonics approach to reading will definitely be the most effective program.

Jolly Grammar builds on the 5 basic skills taught in Jolly Phonics.

1. Learning the letter sounds

2. Learning letter formation

3. Blending

4. Identifying sounds in words and

5. Trick words.

This is a whole school approach in which the students will benefit by

1. Spelling and punctuating more accurately

2. Having a wider vocabulary

3. A clearer understanding of how language works

4. Produce better, more interesting pieces of writing.

Grammar helps children develop more conscious control over clarity and quality writing

1. Understanding more complicated texts

2. Use standard English in speech

SCHOOL FETE IS COMING TO FHPS FRIDAY 28th OCTOBER 2016

Please let us know if you can spend some time on the day to help out. We would

really appreciate your help and support.

Thank you. Have a wonderful weekend!

We now have hi-viz covers for our school bags. These covers are ideal for students who ride or walk to

school especially on dark rainy days. The hi-viz covers are more easily seen by drivers and also offer rain

protection for our school bags. They cost $10 and are available from our uniform shop (limited stock)

We will be holding a second-hand uniform stall at our upcoming Fair. If you have any uniforms (in good

clean condition) that no longer fit your child, please drop them into the school office for sale at our

Fair. This will assist parents to clean out uniforms from their homes and assist families who cannot afford

to purchase new uniforms.

What’s on in 56M CERES – Centre for Education and Research in Environmental Strategies, is an award winning, not-for-profit, sustainability centre located on 4.5 hectares on the Merri Creek in East Brunswick, Melbourne (http://ceres.org.au/about/). The Senior School visited CERES earlier this term. 56M worked with 3 staff members throughout the day. Our program included:

A talk on Indigenous Australians in Victoria, past and present

A walk around the grounds exploring bush tucker

A river walk and discussion on the local area, conservation and eco’ accomplishments.

Information texts have been our writing focus this term. 56M students are getting fast and factual when researching on computers. This style of writing is great for students to investigate their interests! Our writing pieces have focused on a range of topics, such as; significant people, places, iconic locations, animals, science and the earth. The inquiry project on a significant Indigenous Australian will be submitted as an information text later this term.

Students are currently investigating how to measure and understand units of measurements. 56M has investigated finding area of rectangles and triangles. HAVE A GO BELOW: What’s the area of these triangles?
