Dear Parents/Carers,
Term 2
Welcome back for Term 2. It has already started off at a fast pace. This term will be busy with excursions, weekly
gymnastics, Peer Support lessons, NAPLAN for Years 3 & 5 students, Model Mathematician, Zone Cross Country, Winter
PSSA, Band Eisteddfods, Semester One reports and Parent/Teacher Interviews. These things are just what we know about
at the moment. A calendar is attached to the newsletter for Term 2 but please be aware things maybe added and some
things could even be changed at short notice. Keep an eye out for App notifications and the website for changes.
NAPLAN Online – Years 3 & 5
Next Tuesday 14th May 2019 our Year 3 and 5 students will start the NAPLAN Online assessments for Literacy and
Numeracy. All students will require their own set of headphones. During Term 1 students completed practice tests online
to get a feel for the platform and how the assessments will look on their computer screens.
Students and families have the opportunity to trial the types of test questions, and understand the interactive test format
and specific NAPLAN Online tools by visiting ACARA’s public demonstration site. Students are encouraged to look at
appropriate tests for their year level.
School Photos
Last week our school photos were delivered by MSP and distributed to students. On the day of the photos the
photographers took a special “funny” photo of each class. This photo can be viewed at the front office and purchased
separately.
The Family Fundraiser framed photos will be delivered soon and distributed to families, hopefully just in time for a lovely
Mother’s Day gift.
If there are any issues with your school photos please contact MSP Photos on 9831 5505.
School Open Afternoon
The school will hold an Open Afternoon on Wednesday 22nd May 2019 for prospective 2020 enrolments. Thank you to the
many parents who have assisted in our letterbox drop to promote this afternoon over the last 2 weeks.
P&C AGM
Next Monday 13th May the P&C will hold their AGM and May general meeting. All parents and community members are
welcome. The meeting will commence at 7pm.
Winter Uniforms
All students should now be wearing full winter uniform on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. This includes correct black
shoes and school socks. Full sports uniform should be worn on Tuesday and Friday. Please ensure any uniform orders are
placed by Sunday evening through FlexiSchools for the order to be filled and delivered on the following Wednesday.
Adopt a Farmer
Our students raised $664 to go towards the Adopt a Farmer fundraiser yesterday. It was lovely to see the children and staff
dress in “farmer” wear in support of this event.
Peer Support
This term students K-6 are doing Peer Support each week on a Wednesday for 30 minute sessions. Two Peer Leaders, from
Stage 3, facilitate a small group of 8-10 younger students, who work together through a number of structured
activities. Teachers supervise the groups in classrooms. Our focus this year is a unit called Moving Forward which will help
us explore the concept of optimism. Students will engage in fun activities about things that make them happy, their
strengths, resilience, perseverance, goal setting, people who help and ways to think optimistically.
PSSA Sport Representatives
Congratulations to three students who have been selected to represent Sydney West Region at State sporting carnivals this
term. Aaron will be participating in the hockey carnival and Brody and Zach have been selected in the AFL team. We wish
them luck in their respective carnivals.
Cybersafety
There is an online guide available for parents with tips and advice on helping your child have safe and enjoyable experiences
online. Please follow the link to access the information. https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/online-safety-guide
PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning)
We are revisiting our learning of Positive Behaviour for Learning at school this term. We have a focus each week that we are
explicitly teaching in class and reminding the students about daily. Our weekly focus will also be talked about at assembly
lines and our weekly K-6 assembly. The focus will also be displayed on our Electronic board at the front of the school. Please
discuss the PBL values of Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible with your children so that we are all working together to
keep our school a safe, respectful and responsible environment. In Week 1 we focused on Assembly Lines. This week we
focused on Classrooms. The Week 3 focus next week will be around Hard Surfaces. Week 4 will be Stairways and Walkways.
Our PBL values are a common language used across K-6.
Week 1 – Assembly Lines
Week 2 – Classrooms
Week 3 – Hard Surfaces
Week 4 – Stairways and Walkways
ANZAC Day School Service
Our ANZAC Day service was held last Wednesday in our school hall. I would like to thank Mr Coleman who addressed the
school assembly about some of his experiences of being in the army during the Vietnam War. Thank you also to Mr Leverton
who recited the Ode. Lorenzo did a marvellous job of playing the Last Post and Mr Williams played the Reveille. Thank you
to all the families who donated flowers for our special ANZAC wreaths. Many students were involved in the service,
including class representatives as wreath layers and girl guides and scouts as flag bearers. It was a very moving service and
all the students listened carefully and demonstrated compassion during the special assembly.
P&C Trivia Night
The famous Winston Heights Trivia Night will be held on Saturday 27th July 2019 in the school hall. This year the theme is
“Christmas in July”. The flyer is in the newsletter and tables of 8 can now be purchased through FlexiSchools.
Opportunity Class Applications 2020
Year 4 students received a separate note last term outlining the steps to be taken if an application is sought for a position in
an Opportunity Class for 2020. These notes have also been emailed to each Year 4 family. Please understand that if you wish
to apply for a position for your child it is your responsibility to complete the application process online through the
Department of Education’s website which is listed on the information form. Applications are open now and will close on 17th
May.
Mother’s Day
Today our students visited the Mother’s Day stall to buy a special gift for mum and/or nana and/or grandma. Thank you to
the P&C for organising lovely gifts for the children to purchase for this special occasion. A huge thank you to the organising
committee and the parent volunteers who worked on the stall this morning. The Mother’s Day raffle was drawn at the
Assembly and the prize winners are listed below.
1st – Linda..(Franklin)
2nd – Liane..(Brandon)
3rd – Sarah..(Charlotte)
On behalf of all the students and staff at Winston Heights Public School we wish all our mums, nanas, grandmas and all
other mother figures out there a wonderful Mother’s Day for Sunday 12th May.

As mentioned last term we are in the process of installing a new electronic sign-in device on our front counter. This will be used by all visitors to our school including parent helpers. As part of this process all visitors will need to complete a Department of Education Appendix 5 form and supply 100 points of identification. This form can be collected from the office and will only need to be completed once. When checking in for the first time the system will ask you for your name, phone number, reason for visit and to verify you have completed the Appendix 5 and 100 point check. Signing out is easy. You will scan the badge you received at sign-in and you are done! On the next visit to our school you will only need to enter your mobile number. We look forward to using this new device, and of course we will be here to help with any questions that arise during the sign-in process.
PSSA shirts have now been issued to all students competing in the winter PSSA competition. Please ensure these shirts are washed and cared for. At the end of August after the last PSSA round these shirts need to be returned to the office in good clean condition. A fee of $30 is payable for any lost or damaged shirt.

Chaplain Chat - Children and Technology 2
This fortnight I thought I would take you through some of the different features of the Common Sense Media website. It’s extremely informative. https://www.commonsensemedia.org/ Common Sense Media kids movie reviews: These are categorised into various age groups to help you find the best movies for your particular family needs. The biggest family mov-ie at the moment seems to be Endgame. Read what common-sense media says about that here. https://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/avengers-endgame Best Of Lists: They also have a “Best of” list for movies, as they do for books, apps, games, websites, TV, and music. In fact, they even have a Best Of list for Character Devel-opment, to help your kids with enhancing their strengths and life skills. Parents Need to Know: This category includes detailed information about topics such as Cell phones, Screen Time, Social Media, Privacy and Online Safety, Cyber bullying and even whether your child should start their own YouTube channel. You can also follow them on Twitter, where, for example, you can find a quick video on stopping technology from interfering with your child’s sleep. There is so much on this website, I have only just scratched the surface. Check it out yourself and don’t forget to look at their blog page for regular articles such as Step by Step Tips to Set Up Your Kids IPhone. Speaking of technology, I thought I might also add an extra feature to these newsletters this term – podcasts. So my first podcast for the term is Justin Coulson’s Happy Families Podcast. I would love to know what you think, so please feel free to email me at [email protected] or catch me at school Monday mornings and after-noons, Wednesday afternoons or Friday afternoons.
