Hedvig Object Storage supports AWS S3 Object Lock Hedvig supports the S3 Object Lock feature of AWS S3, as described here:

https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/dev/object-lock-overview.html

The Object Locking feature protects objects from being overwritten or deleted for a specified period − or indefinitely. This feature can be used to store objects in WORM (write-once-read-many) mode or to prevent object deletion to meet certain requirements, as well as to provide protection against ransomware.

Object Lock configuration (Retention and Legal Hold) Object Lock is an object-level configuration with two configuration types: Retention and Legal Hold. With Retention, you must specify two parameters: RententionPeriod and RetentionMode. Legal Hold is a flag that you can switch ON or OFF for an object.

Retention • RetentionMode has two possible values: GOVERNANCE and COMPLIANCE. In GOVERNANCE

mode, you cannot delete or overwrite an object or modify the object lock configuration within a specified amount of time, unless you have s3:BypassGovernanceRetention permission. In COMPLIANCE mode, no one can delete/overwrite or change the lock setting for the object, including the owner. And when an object is locked in COMPLIANCE mode, no one can change the retention time.

• RetentionPeriod specifies the length of time for which the retention lock setting will protect this object from being deleted or overwritten. It is specified in setting the lock with the RetainUntilDate parameter, which is a timestamp stored with the retention mode as part of the metadata for a particular object.

Object retention lock settings can be set individually for each object when the object is created (normal object upload, copy object, or create multipart upload).

Legal Hold Legal Hold is another way to protect an object. It is also per object level, and there are two possible values: ON or OFF. When the Legal Hold status is set to be ON for an object, even if the object does not have Retention type lock settings, or the setting simply expired, it will keep protecting the object from overwriting and deletion. There is no expiration time to specify with Legal Hold status; it will remain effective forever until someone sets it to OFF status. Users with s3:PutObjectLegalHold permission can modify legal hold status of an object.

These two configurations do not conflict with each other. You can put both configurations on a single object, and if any of them becomes ineffective, but the other is still in effect, the latter will keep protecting the object.

Bucket level Object Lock Configuration To avoid having to specify lock settings on an object one-by-one, you can set a bucket-level lock configuration to automatically apply a specified locking rule to all objects uploaded into the bucket onward.

This setting is only for specifying the Retention-type lock feature, where a RetentionMode can be chosen, and RetainUntilDate is specified through setting how many Days or Years from the object creation time.

Only the bucket owner and users with s3:GetBucketObjectLockConfiguration permission can set or modify a bucket's Object Lock Configuration.

{ "ObjectLockEnabled": "Enabled", "Rule": { "DefaultRetention": { "Mode": "GOVERNANCE"|"COMPLIANCE", "Days": integer, "Years": integer } } }

Note: Hedvig S3 differs from AWS S3 in Object Lock Bucket Configuration in this way: With AWS S3, before you can apply a lock to any object, you must enable the feature at the time of a new bucket creation, and it will automatically become a Versioning-enabled bucket.

With Hedvig S3, there is no such restriction, and you can set the Lock Configuration anytime on any bucket, whether it is newly created or existing, or whether it is Unversioned or Versioning Enabled or Versioning Suspended. You do not need a bucket lock configuration to start applying lock settings on an individual object.

Highlights of the Hedvig 4.2 release

Here are the highlights of the Hedvig 4.2 release:

• Hedvig vCenter Plugin 4.2 − HTML5 Support for vSphere Client

• Hedvig VAAI NAS Plugin for Non-Dedup Volumes

• Hedvig Support for NFS 4.1

• Hedvig + Splunk Integration

• Hedvig UI Installer Enhancements

• Hedvig High-level Workflow for Block-based Backup Reclamation

• Hedvig + SAP HANA integration

• Container Data Mover (CDM 1.1) Enhancements

Hedvig vCenter Plugin 4.2 − HTML5 Support for vSphere Client The Hedvig vCenter Plugin (VCP), in previous Hedvig releases, has supported the VMware vSphere Web Client.

The web client uses Flash-based technology that results in less-than-ideal performance and constant update requirements. In addition, Adobe is deprecating Flash in December 2020. Since Flash is not a long-term solution, VMware has released an HTML5 version of the web client called the VMware vSphere Client.

With the 4.2 release, Hedvig is releasing a plugin that supports HTML5 and the VMware vSphere Client − and is deprecating support for the Flex (web client) version of the plugin.

Prerequisites for Hedvig vCenter Plugin Note the following prerequisites when using the Hedvig vCenter Plugin:

• Supported vCenter Appliance versions

• Backend Cluster requirement

• Registration for VCP Credentials

Supported vCenter Appliance versions The plugin supports vCenter Appliance 6.7 Update 3j (6.7.0.45000) and above.

Backend Cluster requirement The backend cluster must be HTTPS enabled.

HEDVIG PRODUCT RELEASE NOTES

17

Hedvig VAAI NAS Plugin for Non-Dedup Volumes Hedvig supported, in previous releases, full clones on VMs residing on dedup-enabled Hedvig datastores.

Two needs were observed:

• Support for both dedup and non-dedup volumes

• Creation of templates and further creation of clones out of these templates

With the 4.2 release, Hedvig is enabling the full clone feature to all Hedvig datastores, and it can be accessed by using the Hedvig VAAI NAS Plugin.

For more detail, see the Hedvig VAAI NAS Plugin User Guide.

Hedvig Support for NFS 4.1 Prior to the Hedvig 4.1.2 release, VMware NFS datastores were supported only over Hedvig NFS version 3 exports.

With the Hedvig 4.2 release, Hedvig NFS virtual disks can be provisioned to create NFS version 3 and NFS version 4.1 datastores in VMware.

This feature was validated with ESXi version 6.7P02. In prior ESXi versions, any failover/failback operation on the storage system can cause the ESXi NFS 4.1 client to enter an infinite loop of exchange-id request and reply processing, thus causing the datastore to experience an APD (All Paths Down) state.

The following are not supported in the Hedvig 4.2 release:

• Kerberos authentication is not supported on NFS version 4.1 datastores for VMware.

• pNFS is not supported.

Hedvig UI Installer Enhancements This is a summary of new features of the Hedvig UI Installer. For more detail, see the Hedvig UI Installer User Guide.

• Hedvig UI Installer Upgrade Modifications

• Upgrade Paradigm

• Upgrading the Deploy Node

• Upgrading the Cluster

• Monitoring an Upgrade

Hedvig UI Installer Upgrade Modifications The following modifications have been made to the Hedvig UI Installer to handle upgrades:

• The installer versioning has been added to the UI node.

• A process has been added for upgrading the UI node to a new version.

• Cluster versioning has been added to each installed cluster.

• The ability to upgrade a cluster from an older version to the version installed on the UI node has been added, for both of the following scenarios:

• Upgrading a cluster one-node-at-a-time

• Upgrading a cluster via rack or data center, for Rack Aware or Data Center Aware clusters

Upgrade Paradigm The Hedvig UI Installer is release-centric:

• The deploy node that drives the install has its own release.

• Each separate cluster has its own release.

• The release contains both the executables for driving the install/upgrade and the code for the creation of the cluster.

This tight coupling of the deploy code and the cluster code simplifies the deploy process and limits versioning issues. Thus, the upgrade process always has two steps:

• Upgrading the deploy node with the target version

• Interacting with the UI to transfer that version to each cluster, as needed

The last criterion is the most important – and the other ones are in support of that goal.

HEDVIG PRODUCT RELEASE NOTES

22

Upgrading the Deploy Node The deploy node contains its own release, which controls the install process.

To upgrade the deploy node:

• A self-extracting executable is transferred and installed onto the deploy node, which then does any upgrades necessary to both the UI itself and the underlying deploy environment.

• Sessions connected to the older release are restarted.

• The new version is reflected on the UI itself.

Upgrading the Cluster After the deploy node is upgraded, any existing clusters - in the cluster listing page - will have an indicator next to them showing their current version, and that they can be upgraded.

There are three modes of upgrade:

• non-disruptive upgrade, one-node-at-a-time

• non-disruptive upgrade via rack or data center, for Rack Aware or Data Center Aware clusters

• disruptive upgrade

To upgrade a cluster, you simply login to the cluster and then go to the upgrade drop-down menu on the cluster actions page.

Monitoring an Upgrade Monitoring an upgrade is done in the same panel in which the upgrade was executed.

You can detach and reattach to the process and track the process of the upgrade as it happens.

In addition, the list of clusters will reflect the fact that the cluster is in the process of being upgraded.

Pre-requisites:

• Rough idea of full frequency

Workflow:

• Choose NFS as Disk Type

• Enable Deduplication

• Choose BACKUP as Workload Type

• Choose FOREVER as Retention Policy

• Enter Full Frequency in weeks

Cluster sizing for Block-based Backup Reclamation • Assumptions:

• Subsequent fulls always dedup completely

• 0% dedup for incrementals

• Sizing:

• Init_DatasetSize + Avg_ChangeRate * (IncrementalBackups_In_RetentionWindow + IncrementalBackups_In_GCFrequency)

• Example:

• Full Data set: 100 GB

• Incremental rate: 1%

• Incremental frequency: 1 day

• Retention: 1 month

• GC frequency: 1 week

• Space needed: 100 GB + 1 GB * (30 + 7) = 137 GB

• Metadata space per node:

• 10% of the raw capacity

• Dedup Hash space per node:

• 60 bytes * (usable capacity / 4096) * 1.1 (~1.5% of the raw capacity)

Highlights of the Hedvig CSI Driver 2.0 release

This is a summary of new features in the Hedvig CSI Driver 2.0 release. For more detail, see the Hedvig CSI User Guide.

• Secrets Support − The Hedvig CSI Driver authenticates with a Hedvig Cluster on startup using Kubernetes Secrets.

• Volume Expansion − The Hedvig CSI Driver enables users to expand dynamically provisioned persistent volumes for hedvig-block and hedvig-nfs backend types.

• Raw Block Volume − The Hedvig CSI Driver enables users to dynamically provision persistent volumes that will appear as block devices inside containers. This feature applies only to the hedvig-block backend type.

• Scheduled Snapshots − The Snapshot Scheduler enables users to schedule periodic snapshots of dynamically provisioned persistent volumes through schedule policies. This feature applies only to the hedvig-block backend type.

• Provisioning of Agnostic/Rack Aware volume with single data center − If a Hedvig Storage Cluster is configured to support both Rack Aware and Data Center Aware replication policies, you can create an Agnostic or Rack Aware virtual disk with replicas confined to a single data center.

• Container Data Mover − For Kubernetes environments, the Container Data Mover feature enables the streaming of persistent volume data from a source cluster to a target cluster.
