Open Source History

In the 1950s, IBM distributed operating systems in source format, and the SHARE user group was formed to facilitate the exchange of source code. In 1960's, researchers with access to the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) used a process called Request for Comments, which is similar to open standards, to develop telecommunication network protocols. Characterized by contemporary open source work, this collaborative process led to the birth of the Internet in 1969.

MIT OCWhttp://ocw.mit.edu/index.html

MIT OCW is a large-scale, Web-based electronic publishing initiative funded jointly by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation , MIT, and generous support of the Ab Initio software company.

MIT OCW's goals are to: Provide free, searchable access to MIT's course materials for

educators, students, and self-learners around the world. Extend the reach and impact of MIT OCW and the

"opencourseware" concept.

Page 4: Hedging Overview

MIT OCWhttp://ocw.mit.edu/index.html

MIT OCW would not be possible without the support and generosity of the MIT faculty who choose to share their research, pedagogy, and knowledge to benefit others. We expect MIT OCW to reach a steady - though never static - state by 2008. Between now and then, we will publish the materials from virtually all of MIT's undergraduate and graduate courses.

Page 5: Hedging Overview

MIT OCWhttp://ocw.mit.edu/index.html

We will be continually evaluating the Access, Use, and Impact of MIT OCW. With 1,550 courses published as of November 1, 2006, we are still in a learning stage of this MIT initiative and we will benefit enormously from your feedback, as we strive to make MIT OCW as rich and useful as possible for our users.

MIT OCW Financial Acctg. Course

The lecture note ( ..\Miscellaneous\MITaccounting.htm ) slides explain the basics of financial accounting. Students practice these skills on the required and optional textbook problems listed on the readings page.

This six-week summer course teaches basic concepts of corporate financial accounting and reporting. This information is widely used in making investment decisions, corporate and managerial performance assessment, and valuation of firms. Students perform economics-based analysis of accounting information from the viewpoint of the users of accounting information (especially senior managers) rather than the preparer (the accountant). This course is restricted to MIT Sloan Fellows in Innovation and Global Leadership.

MIT OCW Financial & Managerial Acct.

Helping students achieve the five course challenges is a thorough set of lecture notes, complemented by class overviews and necessary handouts. A complete quiz and midterm exam are also available, with solutions.

15.514 is an intensive introduction to the preparation and interpretation of financial information for investors (external users) and managers (internal users) and to the use of financial instruments to support system and project creation. The course adopts a decision-maker perspective on accounting and finance with the goal of helping students develop a framework for understanding financial, managerial, and tax reports. 15.514 is restricted to System Design and Management students.

UC Berkeley’s Lectures on YouTube

UC Berkeley is the first university to make videos of full courses available through YouTube. Visitors to the site at youtube.com/ucberkeley can view more than 300 hours of videotaped courses and events. Topics range from bioengineering, to peace and conflict studies, to "Physics for Future Presidents," the title of a popular campus course. Building on its initial offerings, UC Berkeley will continue to expand the catalog of videos available on YouTube.View the Playlist Here --- http://www.youtube.com/ucberkeley  There is a link to the most viewed videos (with star ratings) at the above page.

How to Download PC Videos to TV

Giant screen TV sets are better than computer screens for viewing video, including course content video recorded by instructors using such capturing software as Camtasia. As we increasingly download video files or capture streaming video on the Web into video files, it is possible to transfer those files to a DVD disk for playback on other computers and TV sets with DVD players. However, is it possible to transfer files to TV in one step without having to make DVD disks?

Other Examples of Video Lectures Nearly all prestigious universities now offer some form of open sharing

of course materials, the most noteworthy of which is MIT. Yale, however, has some of the finest lectures on video --- http://www.yale.edu/opa/download/VLP_QuestionsAnswers.pdf

In most instances open sharing videos are streaming (using the term loosely here) videos for which there is no file to download. In that case the video must be captured in total or in part by software designed for such purposes. The software I like for video capturing is called Camtasia Recorder --- http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia/record.asp Also see http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia/education.asp

Storing and Sending Video

Typically Web and/or Blackboard servers do not grant enough space to serve up lots of course video, although quite a lot of audio might be served up for stuents.

Open University in the England

Open Sharing Catching on Outside the United StatesBritain’s Open University today formally begins its effort to put its course materials and other content online for all the world to use. With its effort, OpenLearn, which is expected to cost $10.6 million and is supported by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the university joins Massachusetts Institute of Technology and institutions in several other countries in trying to put tools for learning within the reach of otherwise difficult to reach populations.Inside Higher Ed, October 25, 2006

Yale Universityhttp://www.yale.edu/opa/newsr/06-09-19-01.all.html

Yale University is producing digital videos of selected undergraduate courses that it will make available for free on the Internet through a grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

While MIT’s OpenCourseWare model has been widely emulated, Yale will be the first university to tap the potential of digital video by combining course architecture with essentially complete sets of lectures from these courses, as presented by its faculty.

Because of the quality and quantity of these video offerings, UC Berkeley will be the first university with its own page on the Google Video Web site: http://video.google.com/ucberkeley, campus officials said. The campus is making more than 250 hours of content available to the public through Google Video. UC Berkeley's page on the Google Video website features links to top courses, campus events and symposia.

Ask Philosophers (Amherst)

This site puts the talents and knowledge of philosophers at the service of the general public. Send in a question that you think might be related to philosophy and we will do our best to respond to it. To date, there have been 1599 questions posted and 2152 responses.

There is a paradox surrounding philosophy that AskPhilosophers seeks to address. On the one hand, everyone confronts philosophical issues throughout his or her life. But on the other, very few have the opportunity to learn about philosophy, a subject that is usually taught only at the college level.

E-Learning is vitally important to UWC because, used effectively, it can be bring a number of benefits: it can be a means to help our students learn better, and progress faster through their degree; it can be a means to reach out to students who are off campus; it can facilitate learning in spaces and times where learning does not normally happen;

Open Access to Research Reports

Stevan Harnad has created a summary of the universities, university departments, and funding agencies that are requiring their authors to make their research available in an open access mode. See his blog entry, "Pit-Bulls vs. Petitions: A Historic Time for Open Access" on the blog Open Access Archivangelism. You'll notice that Europe is ahead of the U.S. in this activity, though the U.S. will catch up if several important U.S. funder mandates are passed.

http://teacherspayteachers.com/ And now we can harness the internet's strengths in order to

bypass the educational publishing conglomerates and help ourselves. Here, we will pay each other for our teaching materials and evaluate one another's work with ratings and comments.

As sellers, creative teachers will get credit and income for their ideas.

As buyers, teachers will save huge amounts of time and use the best teacher-created, teacher-tested practical materials available.

SCORM

Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) is a collection of specifications that enable interoperability, accessibility and reusability of web-based learning content. Being SCORM compliant in software and course management technologies is very important in education in order to be compatible with other education technologies.

Password Protected Access --- http://www.trinity.edu/rjensen/Blackboard.htm Local Link --- ..\..\blackboard.htm

Even if Web documents have secret links, Web crawlers like Google and Yahoo might find them for searching eyes.

Blackboard (Bb) is the most popular way for colleges to serve up course materials for students without sharing those materials with the outside world. Blackboard has password protection.

Colleges typically do not provide instructors with enough server space for much video.

Moodlehttp://moodle.org/

The word moodle is an acronym for "modular object-oriented dynamic learning environment", which is quite a mouthful. What Scout Report readers should know is that Moodle 1.7 is a tremendously helpful opens-source e-learning platform. With Moodle, educators can create a wide range of online courses with features that include forums, quizzes, blogs, wikis, chat rooms, and surveys. On the Moodle website, visitors can also learn about other features and read about recent updates to the program. This application is compatible with computers running Windows 98 and newer or Mac OS X and newer.

Course Management System Costs

The expense of Blackboard, and all of these alternatives, in fact is much more than licensing fees. The expensive problem is the technical support staff needed to both maintain the servers (these systems have their own servers) and to train users of the system, students and staff. This is an expense that never ends. Most importantly there must be relatively expensive backup systems. Servers crash and burn.

Of course Blackboard and other vendors like eCollege can take all the IT headaches off campus. This is something I recommend for smaller colleges, but it is more expensive in some ways and cheaper in others considering the expensive and specialized IT skills needed to maintain servers and backup systems.
