Open Source History
In the 1950s, IBM distributed operating systems in source format, and the SHARE user group was formed to facilitate the exchange of source code. In 1960's, researchers with access to the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) used a process called Request for Comments, which is similar to open standards, to develop telecommunication network protocols. Characterized by contemporary open source work, this collaborative process led to the birth of the Internet in 1969.

MIT OCW Financial Acctg. Course
The lecture note ( ..\Miscellaneous\MITaccounting.htm ) slides explain the basics of financial accounting. Students practice these skills on the required and optional textbook problems listed on the readings page.
This six-week summer course teaches basic concepts of corporate financial accounting and reporting. This information is widely used in making investment decisions, corporate and managerial performance assessment, and valuation of firms. Students perform economics-based analysis of accounting information from the viewpoint of the users of accounting information (especially senior managers) rather than the preparer (the accountant). This course is restricted to MIT Sloan Fellows in Innovation and Global Leadership.

Helping students achieve the five course challenges is a thorough set of lecture notes, complemented by class overviews and necessary handouts. A complete quiz and midterm exam are also available, with solutions.
15.514 is an intensive introduction to the preparation and interpretation of financial information for investors (external users) and managers (internal users) and to the use of financial instruments to support system and project creation. The course adopts a decision-maker perspective on accounting and finance with the goal of helping students develop a framework for understanding financial, managerial, and tax reports. 15.514 is restricted to System Design and Management students.

How to Download PC Videos to TV
Giant screen TV sets are better than computer screens for viewing video, including course content video recorded by instructors using such capturing software as Camtasia. As we increasingly download video files or capture streaming video on the Web into video files, it is possible to transfer those files to a DVD disk for playback on other computers and TV sets with DVD players. However, is it possible to transfer files to TV in one step without having to make DVD disks?

Blackboard (Bb) is the most popular way for colleges to serve up course materials for students without sharing those materials with the outside world. Blackboard has password protection.
Colleges typically do not provide instructors with enough server space for much video.

The word moodle is an acronym for "modular object-oriented dynamic learning environment", which is quite a mouthful. What Scout Report readers should know is that Moodle 1.7 is a tremendously helpful opens-source e-learning platform. With Moodle, educators can create a wide range of online courses with features that include forums, quizzes, blogs, wikis, chat rooms, and surveys. On the Moodle website, visitors can also learn about other features and read about recent updates to the program. This application is compatible with computers running Windows 98 and newer or Mac OS X and newer.

Course Management System Costs
The expense of Blackboard, and all of these alternatives, in fact is much more than licensing fees. The expensive problem is the technical support staff needed to both maintain the servers (these systems have their own servers) and to train users of the system, students and staff. This is an expense that never ends. Most importantly there must be relatively expensive backup systems. Servers crash and burn.
Of course Blackboard and other vendors like eCollege can take all the IT headaches off campus. This is something I recommend for smaller colleges, but it is more expensive in some ways and cheaper in others considering the expensive and specialized IT skills needed to maintain servers and backup systems.
