message from j. reeve bright ’66, chair

For the past several years I have embraced the opportunity to share remarks at The commitment of those people has steered the Academy toward continued prosperity and another year of achievement in fund raising and financial health. More than 850 alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends joined forces to raise just under $3,000,000 in fiscal year 2013. The money raised by all individuals with ties to the School will sustain and invigorate the programs and people who define the unparalleled experience that is a Hebron education. It guarantees that a student with a passion for violin and surfing will enjoy the same wonderful opportunities that a student primed for Division I hockey or elite fashion design will enjoy.

As I stated in the opening lines of this message: Thank You. This time, I thank not only the School’s faculty, but also you: a friend, grandparent, alumnus/a, or current parent of Hebron Academy. Thank you for ensuring that Hebron may honor its mission of inspiring and guiding students to reach their highest potential in mind, body and spirit year after year. Your generosity runs deep, and I hope you will continue to support an institution whose success depends entirely on the people who make it truly Hebron.

Commencement, an occasion which, year after year, leaves me feeling ever prouder of our community. I always open my address with the same two words: Thank You. It is not easy to express to what depth I feel thanks, as those two syllables are seemingly never enough. My thank you is to Hebron’s teachers. I know how hard they work, and I know how hard it can be to work with young people of a certain age, having been one of them many years ago. There is no question that the people of Hebron Academy are the life force of our school. We depend on one another to fuel the engine that drives this wonderful institution, and it is the efforts of many that lead to the greatest change.

Hebron has risen to the challenge year after year of filling our classrooms and populating our residence halls with talented, sincere and friendly students. We have incredible teachers who follow through on their promise and forge relationships with adolescents that transcend time and classroom walls. We have alumni who are committed to keeping the ship afloat, and whose contributions enable Hebron Academy to stay the course.

This past year Hebron continued to do what it does best: prepare young people for the bigger world beyond, thanks to the educators and individuals who without hesitation support our students in all of life’s arenas. It is not often that a high schooler can say that his geometry teacher is also his lacrosse coach and hallmate who possesses an uncanny ability to tie bowties and play the harmonica. Conversely, where else can a teacher feel empowered to roll out her own after-school biology program from concept to completion and relish the successes of her students as they explore the complexities of marsh ecosystems? It’s hard to picture Hebron without its people. Hebron is its people.

message from the director of advancement and external relations

The Academy’s focus on public speaking urged all seniors and post-graduates to step outside their comfort zones to tell their own meaningful stories to the entire school in their “Last Word” speeches. Although some students felt they would never be able to do this, by the end of the year each student could feel proud to have accomplished this daunting feat. The stories that were told ranged from incredibly moving and personal to light and uplifting. Students will remember this sense of accomplishment felt at the completion of their speech for years to come. The faculty worked with these students tirelessly, as they do each day, to fine-tune their stories in order to make the presentations the best that they could be.

Gifts to Hebron support the people and programs that allow Hebron to inspire the best in all of its students.

The past year at Hebron was filled with numerous positive experiences for students.

Thank you to the 859 alumni, parents, grandparents and friends who made a gift to the Academy in FY 2012-2013. All gifts help to ensure Hebron’s place among the top New England schools. As we celebrate recent achievements and anticipate future success, please know that we are grateful for your generosity.

Sydney Randall ‘13 (New Gloucester, ME), headed to Skidmore College (Saratoga Springs, NY) this fall, urged her peers to “be happy, and don’t forget to embrace your weirdness” in her Last Word speech.

The ties of memory are maintained through reunions and functions, yet the bonds of classes are also reinforced through the great willingness of Hebron’s alumni to support the vision and success of the Academy. Listed here are all gifts made by alumni and honorary class members—to operations, capital projects and endowment. As always, we are deeply grateful to the many alumni who

have joined together in support of their alma mater.

planned gifts: investing in hebron’s vision

Including Hebron Academy in your charitable estate planning is one of the most personal ways to express your philanthropy. We are forever grateful for this commitment, and we honor those who remember the Academy in this way by recognizing them as members

of the Franklin Society.

The society was named to celebrate Dr. Benjamin Franklin’s qualities of foresight, prudent financial management and intellectual achievement. Dr. Franklin serves as a symbol of building up on the past for the benefit of the future.

My husband Ted and I currently support Hebron Academy not just because my late brother James C. Yovic graduated from Hebron in 1976.

Hebron will receive the largest charitable gift in our estate plans even though we also support our own alma maters and other organizations.

We put Hebron Academy first because Hebron teaches young people the timeless values of integrity and service. Hebron’s positive influence extends well beyond Maine – the Academy’s alumni, faculty, staff, families, and friends have a global reach.

Volunteer of the YearRichard “Dick” Forté, Class of 1962

Dick was a four-year student at Hebron and served the Academy in numerous capacities since

graduating. He took on the role of Class Agent and has an uncanny ability to keep the gang in touch with one another, evidenced by ‘62’s remarkable turnout at its 50th Reunion last October.

While at Hebron, Dick immersed himself in sports, arts and activities and, through his high level of achievement and graciousness, garnered the respect of classmates and teachers alike. He found time to play football and basketball, ski and run track in addition to participating in Academy clubs and the theater program.

After Hebron, Dick went on to Bowdoin, graduating in 1966, and headed to Columbia to earn his MBA. He completed his studies in 1968 and took over the helm of his family’s cashmere business until 2004. Dick remained in close contact with Hebron throughout the years, volunteering for the role of Chairman of the Annual Giving Fund in 1987, Class Agent, then esteemed Trustee and eventually Chairman of the Board in the late 80s and early 90s, where he served until 1994. Hebron named Dick Trustee Emeritus for his outstanding leadership and unwavering service to the Academy, acting on the Board for well over a decade.

Dick is a longtime supporter of the School, making regular contributions to various programs since 1965. A member of the Franklin Society, he champions Hebron’s mission of today and has helped ensure that it will remain alive and well for young people in the decades to come.

At Reunion-Homecoming Weekend last fall, Head of School John King (left) presented Dick Forté ’62 (right) with the Volunteer of the Year Award while Board Chair J. Reeve Bright ’66 (center) looked on.

Young men of Hebron’s newest class of alumni look on at Commencement this past May. From left to right: Ryan Ratsep, Mike Kelly, Sam Kinasewich, Kale Johnstone, Robbie Berube and Pat Shelley of the Class of 2013.
