Hebrews A Study In The Book Of Faith of our Fathers Song #265 Faith of our fathers, holy faith! We will be true to Thee till death Thee = God When we sing this song lets make sure we have the right faith & right fathers in mind Acts 2:42; 1 Jn. 4:6; Jn. 15:20 Faith of our Fathers Some are committed to their ancestors, not scripture Ben Cook, a Southern Baptist minister said he was taught the following song: Baptist, Baptist, Baptist Baptist till I die Id rather be a Baptist And eat that Baptist pie! How healthy is it to teach this song to anyone? Faith of our Fathers Some are committed to their ancestors, not scripture Julie McClure, a Methodist of 105 years, said: It used to be that you never heard of anything but Methodist. Its the truth. The Old M. E. Methodist Church is the first church that I can remember and thats been a right long time, you know. Its been there ever since the worlds been standing, I reckon. I wouldnt ever part with the Methodists. Thats right. I know all about it. My father was a proud Methodist and so am I (Foxfire Seven, Paul F. Gillespie, p. 176). Do not think of men above that which is written (1 Cor. 4:6) Faith of our Fathers Heb. 10:19-31 This passage cant get any more clearer about our duties! Once your life is done your legacy is established! Forever fixed It can never be changed Eccl. 1:9 The wiseman said: That which has been is what will be, That which is done is what will be done. If your reputation was to attend sporadically (once a week or less) thats exactly what will be remembered about you!!! Redeeming The Time Be moved to worship with the saints! 24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. 26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries (Heb. 10:24-27) When I Forsake the Assembly I . 1. Trample the Son of God cccunderfoot 2. Count the blood of the ccccovenant a common thing 3. Insult the Spirit of grace 4. Crucify again the Son of God ccc (Heb. 6:6) Faith of our Fathers Chapter 11 The chapter break may be unfortunate Chapter 11 is built directly upon what was just said: 10:38 Now the just shall live by faith There are some who want to use this verse to promote justification by faith alone but they are divorcing it from its context! The writer shows the faith that saves is the faith that obeys! v4 by faith Abel offered v5 by faith Enoch pleased God v7 by faith Noah prepared the ark v8 by faith Abraham obeyed v11 by faith Sarah judged him faithful v17 by faith Abraham offered The Elders obtained a good testimony by Faith! v20 by faith Isaac blessed v21 by faith Jacob blessed v22 by faith Joseph gave instruction v23 by faith Moses was hidden v24 by faith Moses refused / chose v27 by faith Moses forsook Egypt The Elders obtained a good testimony by Faith! v28 by faith Moses kept the Passover v29 by faith Israel passed through v30 by faith Israel encircled v31 by faith Rahab received the spies The Elders obtained a good testimony by Faith! And some say that works have nothing to do with saving faith!!? Faith of our Fathers Heb. 11:1-40 Abraham, vss Sarah, vss Moses, vss 1 2 3 Faith of our Fathers Heb. 11:1-40 Faith of our Fathers Heb. 12:1-11 He brings up the topic of chastening and discipline v7 For what son is there whom a father does not chasten? v9 We have had human fathers who corrected us and we ppppp paid them respect It is the chief responsibility of the father to carry out corrective punishment V11 It yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those ppppp who have been trained by it It will help us to live right Faith of our Fathers Heb. 12:12-17 He pictures them as having had an accident or injury (due to their backsliding) Theyve got feeble knees (v12)! Make straight paths for your feet so that what is lame may not be dislocated (v13) See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise but understand what the will of the Lord is (Eph. 5:15). Faith of our Fathers Heb. 12:12-17 One root of bitterness can cause many to be defiled! One or two bitter Christians in a congregation can cause others to fall away!!! This is an admonition to make sure we have proper attitudes toward Gods people!!!
