INFORMATION REGARDING COMMUNITY
SECURITY SERVICE (CSS)
Dear friends and members of the Bayit,
A few weeks ago I was asked by the President of our Bayit,
David Braunstein, if I would be willing to get involved in a
program to provide much needed security for The Bayit.
Having learned a long time ago not to volunteer until you
knew what you were getting in to, I told David I needed
more information. Over the past weeks I got the information
I was looking for and committed to leading the effort to bring
a Community Security Service to the Bayit.
One only needs to reflect on the recent acts of terrorism
against Jews and Jewish institutions around the world to
understand the need to improve security at the Bayit. We
must be cognizant of the immediate and growing threat to
our physical security. One way to reduce the security threat
is to become part of the Community Security Service (CSS).
CSS is a fully volunteer based apolitical and non-
denominational organization. Its goal is to protect Jewish life
and the Jewish way of life. Its membership includes more
than two dozen houses of worship in the tri state area and
Massachusetts. CSS’s goal is to develop effective deterrence
and response capabilities to protect community members
and institutions. It adheres to all local and federal laws and
cooperates closely with local law enforcement agencies.
The CSS effort is staffed entirely by volunteers, that’s you
and me. We know the Bayit, we have a good idea of who
belongs and who might not belong. We will be the eyes and
ears that will identify something strange and respond in a
timely manner to protect and save lives.
For our CSS to function properly we will need many
volunteers. Your commitment will be a two hour shift every
four to six weeks. Members who commit to be team leaders
will attend a training course one night a week for three
months. Local synagogue volunteers will attend two training
classes of three hours. You will learn everything you need to
know during your training including how to work together as
a team.
I know that each of you appreciates the importance of this
effort. Please consider the importance of volunteering. The
more volunteers we have, the fewer times each member will
have to serve. We will be distributing more information in
the near future. The training for team leaders will begin in
April. We must assemble a critical mass of volunteers to
make this work. Please submit your name to the Bayit office
to be added to the list of potential volunteers.
Please help make the Bayit a safer place for all of us.
Shabbat Shalom.
