Heavenly Vision; More Human World While we were still without hope, God took us out of our emptiness and brought us into a new land, making with us a covenant of libera- tion. But we remain “set upon the things of this world,” burdened with “the original darkness that shadows our vision.” Today’s liturgy is about restoring our sight so that we can “see the bounty of the Lord in the land of the liv- ing.” The disciples saw “the bounty of the Lord” on the mountaintop. They witnessed the daz- zling glory of Jesus shining in the company of Moses and Elijah, the glory of the fulfillment of the law and the prophets. Abraham had also stood in the presence of the Lord, and he had been overwhelmed by a terrifying darkness pierced by the bright light of a smoking brazier and a flaming torch. The road from Abraham’s encounter with God to the disciples’ encounter with God was a long one. Lent is an acting out of the long road from the covenant to its fulfillment. It is our public proclamation that we are a people who “eagerly await the coming of our savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.” We recognize that “we have our citizenship in heaven,” but in the meantime we exercise our citizenship on earth for the coming of the kingdom of God. We purge ourselves of our Self-reliance, our thirst for power, and our preoccupation with self-interest, sacrificing and praying that God might “deliver Israel from all her distress.” Christians, on pilgrimage toward the heavenly city, should seek and think of those things which are above. This duty in no way decreases, rather it increases, the importance of their obligation to work with all men in the building of a more human world. Heavenly Vision; More Human World While we were still without hope, God took us out of our emptiness and brought us into a new land, making with us a covenant of libera-tion. But we remain “set upon the things of this world,” burdened with “the original darkness that shadows our vision.” Today’s liturgy is about restoring our sight so that we can “see the bounty of the Lord in the land of the liv-ing.” The disciples saw “the bounty of the Lord” on the mountaintop. We purge ourselves of our Self-reliance, our thirst for power, and our preoccupation with self-interest, sacrificing and praying that God might “deliver Israel from all her distress.”

Christians, on pilgrimage toward the heavenly city, should seek and think of those things which are above. This duty in no way decreases, rather it increases, the importance of their obligation to work with all men in the building of a more human world.

3 FROM OUR PASTOR, FR. DENNY

Pope Francis’ Lenten Message ...continued from last week

2. God’s covenant with humanity:

a history of mercy

The mystery of divine mercy

is revealed in the history of the cove-

nant between God and his people

Israel. God shows himself ever rich

in mercy, ever ready to treat his peo-

ple with deep tenderness and com-

passion, especially at those tragic

moments when infidelity ruptures

the bond of the covenant, which then needs to be ratified

more firmly in justice and truth. Here is a true love story, in

which God plays the role of the betrayed father and husband,

while Israel plays the unfaithful child and bride. These do-

mestic images – as in the case of Hosea (cf. Hos 1-2) – show to

what extent God wishes to bind himself to his people.

This love story culminates in the incarnation of God’s

Son. In Christ, the Father pours forth his boundless mercy

even to making him “mercy incarnate” (Misericordiae Vultus,

8). As a man, Jesus of Nazareth is a true son of Israel; he em-

bodies that perfect hearing required of every Jew by the She-

ma, which today too is the heart of God’s covenant with Isra-

el: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord; and you

shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all

your soul, and with all your might” (Dt 6:4-5). As the Son of

God, he is the Bridegroom who does everything to win over

the love of his bride, to whom he is bound by an uncondition-

al love which becomes visible in the eternal wedding feast.

This is the very heart of the apostolic kerygma, in which

divine mercy holds a central and fundamental place. It is

“the beauty of the saving love of God made manifest in Jesus

Christ who died and rose from the dead” (Evangelii Gaudium,

36), that first proclamation which “we must hear again and

again in different ways, the one which we must announce

one way or another throughout the process of catechesis, at

every level and moment” (ibid., 164). Mercy “expresses God’s

way of reaching out to the sinner, offering him a new chance

to look at himself, convert, and believe” (Misericordiae Vultus,

21), thus restoring his relationship with him. In Jesus cruci-

fied, God shows his desire to draw near to sinners, however

far they may have strayed from him. In this way he hopes to

soften the hardened heart of his Bride.

FROM TEMPTATION TO TRANSFIGURATION By Fr. Abe Arganiosa

T he Church opened the First Sunday of Lent with the Gospel on the Temptation of Jesus on the Mount [cf. Lk 4:1-13] and this Second Sunday of Lent we reflect on the Transfiguration of the Lord [cf. Lk 9:28b-36]. The First Sunday shows the humanity of Jesus getting hungry due to for-

ty days fasting and being tempted by the Devil and now in the Second Sunday we see a glorified Lord in the fullness of his divinity shining on Mount Tabor. These two Christ-events invite us to inter-relate with them our own life and find meaning in them for our spiritual benefit. During the Ash Wednesday the Church reminded that we are dust and from dust we shall return [Gen 3:19]. Being humans we are made of clay, subject to sin, failures and sufferings but at the same time God breathed unto us His very own Spirit so that we share in the divine life [Gen 2:7] through the Holy Spirit poured into our hearts [Rom 5:5]. We have been anointed by the Holy Spirit [2 Cor 2:21-22] and because of that we can cry out ‘Abba, Father’ [Gal 4:6]. The Church is telling us that we must not allow ourselves to be defeated by our weaknesses. The Church is giving us hope amidst the trials and temptations of life. The Church is asking us not to be afraid to be vulnerable because we are not alone in our limitations. Like the ancient sage of the Greeks used to say: “Know thyself”. Knowing ourselves means we recognize our own limits as well as our own talents. We must find the right balance between our weakness and our strength because in the middle of them there is virtue. Over emphasis on our weaknesses could lead to depression while over emphasis on our strength could lead to pride… both ways is a pitfall. Knowing our weaknesses if properly done leads to humility. Vulnerability teach-es us that we are not ‘gods’ but instead children of God. We need God in our life and this attitude of dependence is actually a source of strength. We came from God [Jn 1:2-3] and in Him we found love, light and happiness. Only in God will our souls truly find rest and happiness. As St. Augustine beautifully wrote in his Confessions: “You made us for Yourself O Lord and our hearts will not rest until they rest in Thee.” Thus, St. Paul tells us that when we are weak then we are strong in Christ Jesus the Lord [2 Cor 2:10]. The Transfiguration of the Lord, on the other hand, is a reminder that God had created us not for death but for eternal life. Jesus is God [Jn 1:1] and in Him we also find our eternal life [Jn 6:51]. Weak though we are because we are made of clay but once we united ourselves with Jesus then we can share in His glory and eternity but we need to believe in Him, to love Him, to trust in Him and to be faithful to Him until the end [2 Tim 2:11-13]. To follow Satan leads to Sin and Death; to follow Jesus leads to Glory. Death leads to decay but the Salvation of Christ will transform our mortal bodies and will fashion them according to His glorious body [Phil 3:20-21]. We shall be like Jesus and we shall see Him face to face [1 Jn 3:2] as Peter, James and John did on Mount Tabor. We shall behold the splendor of God shining on the face of Jesus and like Moses and Elijah we too shall participate in the heavenly life of the Lord. Dust though we are in body yet we are Children of God in Spirit called to be with Him forever [Ash Wednesday]. There are sufferings and temptations in life but if we are with the Lord we shall be victorious [First Sunday] and for those who will endure in faith and charity shall receive the crown of everlasting life [Second Sunday].

SACRED HEART SCHOOL 6

Dear Parishioners of Sacred Heart,

Our second weekly drawing took place on Tuesday. The

weekly $100 prize went to Kenneth Mraz. Congratulations

Mr. Mraz.

Our First Grade classes are continuing their work on plan-

ets. They show their understanding in multiple ways. They

create a digital booklet while in their Computer class and

also gather information in their classrooms for an informa-

tional book. This gives the students skills in creating digital

work along with the research skills in the classroom. Plus,

they love learning about planets! Our Eighth Graders are

completing their Kindness videos. This was a student led

project. Students wrote the script along with videoing. We

will have the video online by the end of March. Our Student

Council along with our Ambassadors continue their work

on creating a video for our school. This video will give the

student’s perspective of what Sacred Heart means to them.

Thank you for your continued support for your parish

school. Without your support, we could not provide the pro-

grams needed for Sacred Heart School.

Blessings,

Mr. Larry Hoskins

Principal,

donation you make is whatever you might consider to be

the cost of a meal out at a restaurant for you and your

family. All the proceeds benefit St. Vincent DePaul Socie-

ty.

A Big Thanks Thank you to everyone that stepped up to help with the Luke 18 retreat last

weekend. We had an amazing weekend! I would like to thank the teachers of the

school for allowing us to use their spaces, the food team and all the sleep houses.

I would like to send a special thanks to Bart Castelli, Chris Bullerdick, and Mary

& Dave Henke for the endless support on the weekend.
