While others were rebelling, I, too, tried my hand at independence, wanting to make my own decisions, guide my own life. I was eight. “I’m going to be a garbage collector,” I announced. I can almost feel my heels digging in, waiting for a fight. Without missing a beat my mother simply replied, “That’s great. Everyone has garbage, own your own company and you’ll make millions.”

It may not have been the answer I had anticipated but it’s exactly the kind of philosophy I’ve always admired. If you want something; if you love something, there’s nothing to stop you from doing it. Find a way to make a living from it, and you have the key to success. That’s not to say things will be easy. But to me, those who choose to follow their dreams, and who support the dreams of others make up the Warrior

Women as personified in our amazing photo shoot from Maurizio Fantini.

So it seems appropriate in our “Warrior Women” issue that we celebrate those that go beyond your average design, such as Copenhagen based jewelry designer Alidra Alic, whose wearable art is admired by both art and jewelry lovers; Julia Kaldy who continues to push the boundaries of footwear design and Swedish designer Efva Attling whose inspiring designs and powers of re-invention are truly remarkable.

We also welcome to the fold two of our own warriors, our new Editor-at-Large Samantha Lim and Associate Editor Kerri Jarema. We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed making it.

“Functionality is important, but function, too, is a design decision.”

Page 11: Heaven Has Heels

It can be hard for up-and-coming designers to stand out in the footwear industry but with the kind of designs Julia Kaldy dreams up, stardom was only ever a heel away.

Starting out in handbag design, it was a work-shop for furniture designers at the Danish Design School in Copenhagen that ignited her love for footwear. “I instantly fell in love with the organic and natural materials” says Kaldy. It was the inspiration for her very first shoe collection, Urban Oasis—the essence of designs to come.

Pushing the limits of form meets function, Kaldy continued to forge new paths in foot-wear from outrageous sandals with red leather cutouts to fur covered ankle booties. Her most recent work, Construct explores the negative space that is created as angles and lines bend, break, intersect and open up into new dimensions.

The result is an absurdly beautiful collection of black and white shoes and handbags that range from the avant garde (a black leather bootie that sits atop a cage) to the relatively simple (a peep toe sandal with sheer cutouts in the leather). So what makes a great shoe? “Impeccable quality and intelligent design,” says Kaldy. “It must have details not found anywhere else and make the wearer feel special.”

It is immediately clear when looking through Kaldy’s work that she takes this idea entirely to heart. You would be hard-pressed to find a single shoe in her portfolio that looks famil-iar.

This utter devotion to innovative design constantly challenges Kaldy’s expertise and creativity to continually create a shoe that is both high-fashion art and wearable. “For me, the human body is the base,” she says. “My shoes are wearable, but you have to learn how to wear them. Most of my models pro-duce a new ergonomic effect on the wearer that makes them walk different, act differ-ently. Each ingredient, each element, has an essential reason why it has been used. Func-tionality is important, but function, too, is a design decision.”

“I admire neat and pure solutions where the materials themselves are given the most attention,” says Kaldy, citing the sculptures of Tara Donovan, the conceptual work of Argen-tinian fashion designer Aitor Throup and the famed fashion houses of Givenchy, Maison Martin Margiela, Marni and Prada as some of her greatest design icons. “I usually turn to contemporary art searching for materials used in new contexts.”

Looking to the future, Kaldy hopes that her brand will continue to produce a range of quality collections without making sacrifices to designs or production standards. “I think our strength is and always will be the power to surprise,” adds Kaldy. “I will only expand as long as these principles can be upheld. The shoes have a big responsibility and an inappropriate shoe can ruin a whole outfit.” — KERRI JAREMA

When it comes to inspired design,

you can’t go past Copenhagen-based

contemporary jewelry artist, Alidra Alic.

Her Haute Jewelry designs transport you

to another world; one where anything is

possible.

Would you define your designs as pieces

of art or jewelry? Is it possible to be

both?

It’s definitely possible to be both. ‘Jewelry

art’ or ‘ contemporary jewelry’ exists as

an established art form since the 1960s,

it is discrete yet very well established

with select international artists, forums,

galleries and collectors. You almost have

to fall in love with this art form to be able

to find the mentioned galleries and to be

a dedicated follower since contemporary

jewelry is not making noise on the

international market. It is a universe all

of its own, and it interacts with the public

from its own point of view.

You’ve mentioned you work with “themes

of illusion and lack of function” could you

explain that a little more?

This was my earlier process, now I have

moved to be ether unique pieces of Haute

Jewelry, or pieces of sculptural art with

a wearable

piece of

jewelry

integrated.

This was

a natural

process

of my

development as an artist based upon

my interaction with the public.

Your designs are so innovative, have

you had to forge new techniques in

manufacturing and design in order to

bring them to life?

Yes, besides spending years in

laboratories exploring techniques,

I have managed to develop two

techniques particularly that help me

visualize my artistic language.

What role do you think jewelry should

play in our lives?

Jewelry is an intimate object since it

is worn on the body, either as a status

symbol or because of its sentimental

value. If I can say what jewelry should

be, than jewelry should be crafted well

according to the artist’s identity and

craftsmanship. Also esthetically jewelry

should assemble and support the

wearer’s identity.

You use a variety of materials—from

plastic to silver, gold to diamonds—

does the design dictate which materials

you use? Or does pricing come into

play?

The artistic expression and fulfillment

of the esthetics is the most important

aim in my creations.

What are your plans for 2013?

In May the new collection and

collaboration will be launched here in

Copenhagen, Denmark.

We can’t wait! Until then, click on the

link below to see more of Alidra Alic’s

creations.

InSPIRED DESIGn AT ITS BEST

Welcome to the nine lives of Efva Attling; an accomplished model, singer, songwriter, artist and jewelry designer. During her many incarnations one thing remains constant, a need to create, communicate and inspire.

We first met at her U.S. flagship store on Little 12th street in Manhattan’s Meatpacking area. Nestled unassumingly among America’s big hitters, Attling’s store is an extension of her own timeless style and personal philosophy.

“My aim is to move and connect people,” says Attling. A former songwriter she knows the importance of words and how they move people. It’s often the sentiment behind the design that keeps her fans coming back time and time again.

In a world where conventional relationships and family structures are a thing of the past, Attling’s designs reflect our changing world; creative yet conventional designs for an unconventional life. After all, who doesn’t need (or at least know someone) who would appreciate a “Divorced with Children” or “Bend Over” diamond ring?

Best of all, Attling’s designs are far from elitist. They aren’t merely concerned with materials and trends but shed light

on practical concerns that help bring beauty to those who are apprehensive about wearing jewels. A great example is her men’s Peek-a-Boo ring.

“I’m Swedish and I know that Swedish guys are quite shy with jewelry,” she says. “So I hid the diamond but there’s a little window so the one who wears it can flaunt it when he wants to. He’s got a diamond and knows its there its a power feeling.”

With so many awards under her belt Attling believes the key to her success has been her life experience. “I wouldn’t have been able to do this if I started my education as a jeweler when I was 17,” she says. “I had to get my experience from life and meeting inspiring people to design the way I do.” And those designs attract all walks of life, from celebrities such as Madonna and Yoko Ono to everyday wearers.

Efva Attling is a storyteller who weaves together form and function to create statement pieces that inspire and show to the world, in a subtle yet powerful way, that we all have a history that we should be proud of. Not always pretty, it’s about the packaging that can turn any experience into something of beauty. — ANGELA GILLTRAP
