RE: PROFESSIONAL RECOMMENDATION FOR MS. HEATHER EXUM
***************************************************************************
Dear Teacher Hiring Manager:
It has been my pleasure for the last year to come to know Heather Exum as a fellow
professional educator and next door co-worker. I see on a daily basis Ms. Exum’s interaction with
her students, fellow teachers, and administrators. She has consistently shown herself to be a highly
intelligent, hard-working, and creative teacher. She is ethical in all her actions, dedicated to her
students’ success, self-disciplined in her work habits, passionate about her subject, and energetic
in her curriculum delivery. As someone who has taken hundreds of students overseas for the last
17 years to both Europe and Asia, I can say without reservation that I recommend Ms. Exum for
an international teaching position.
Ms. Exum currently teaches AP biology, honors biology, and biology at Tech High. Her
students range in level from special education entering freshmen to AP graduating seniors. Ms.
Exum’s classroom is rigorous but fair, tolerant but with high standards, and structured but student-
focused. She possesses keen insight into students’ needs and is thorough and consistent in her
efforts to help all her students achieve to their highest potential. She is highly motivated,
organized, and well-informed. She plans well, is a good problem-solver, and is direct, personable,
and professional in her communication with her students, their parents, fellow teachers, and
administrators. She LOVES learning and possesses an intellectual curiosity combined with an
ability to share her excitement for learning that is a pleasure to witness. She is a caring and
cooperative co-worker. She fully understands the complex components of her job – maintaining
technological and biological resources, executing curriculum and professional standards, and
ensuring adolescent training and development - and fulfills her responsibility to each thoroughly.
Ms. Exum is respected by the rest of the staff not only for her depth of knowledge on any
number of topics but also for her personal integrity, her outgoing personality, and her deep interest
in world affairs and in making the world a better place. She is an invaluable asset to our staff and
would be an asset to any program with which she is involved. Although she will be missed, I
strongly recommend her for any teaching position for which she applies.
Sincerely,
Maureen T. Bergeron (former Reuter), Language Arts Department Chair
