Edith�Knouī�was�born�October�13,�1919�to�a�lovely�couple,�Roy�and�Verna�Marie�in�Wilmont,�a�small�town�outside�of�Canton,�Ohio.�When�she�was�quite�young,�her�faͲther�took�a�job�in�his�brother’s�hardware�store�near�PiƩsburgh,�returning�six�years�later�to�Minerva,�outside�of�Canton�when�Edith�was�between�seven�and�eight�years�old.�Edith�had�an�older�sister,�Mildred,�and�a�brother�five�years�younger�named��HarͲold.�They�lived�on�a�farm�during�the�Depression�and�the�siblings�aƩended�a�oneͲroom�school�house.���
Jobs�were�scarce�but�her�father�got�a�job�as�a�“tenant�farmer.”�Edith�recalls�that�during�her�four�years�of�high�school,�they�moved�four�Ɵmes.�During�their�Ɵme�on�the�farm,�Edith�had�been�given�a�pig�which�she�pruͲdently�sold�to�buy�a�cornet�plus�the�music�book�to�teach�herself�how�to�play�it.�This�was�the�beginning�of�a�lifeͲlong�love�of�music�and�playing�in�many�bands�and�orchestras.��
Edith�held�several�jobs�at�lunch�counters�following�their�move�to�the�city�but�one�day�announced�to�her�parents�that�she�wanted�to�join�the�Army.�Her�Dad�wasn’t�so�sure�but�her�Mom�said�okay�so�oī�she�went�to�boot�camp.�AŌer�boot�camp,�Edith�assumed�she�would�be�assigned�to�scrub�floors�in�a�hospital,�but�aŌer�her�placement�interview,�she�was�assigned�to�help�start�the�brand�new�WAC�Band.�They�iniƟally�were�sent�to�Daytona�Beach�to�listen�to�other�bands�and�then�were�sent�as�a�group�to�Louisiana.�However,�the�heat�was�too�much�to�play�outside�so�they�went�to�Georgia,�the�training�center�for�WACS.���
During�her�two�years�there,�Edith�played�her�trumpet�in�a�marching�band�and�dance�band,�and�her�soŌerͲtoned�cornet�for�concerts.�Most�of�the�girls�in�her�band�had�extra�duƟes�besides�band,�but�Edith�was�conscriptͲed�by�the�1st�Sergeant�to�be�her��company�clerk,�a�poͲsiƟon�she�held�for�almost�three�years.��
They�were�next�sent�to�Charleston,�South�Carolina�to�play�for�the�wounded�soldiers�as�they�arrived�at�the�Army�hospital.�They�would�play�for�as�much�as�half�a�
day�along�with�other�famous�entertainers�such�as�Helen�Keller�and�some�movie�stars.�Every�Wednesday,�the�band�would�record�a�concert�that�was�broadcast�over�the�radio�and�every�evening,�they�would�play�at�the�lowering�of�the�flag.�On�weekends,�Edith�someƟmes�carried�out�this�duty�by�herself.�AŌer�another�assignment�to�an�Army�hospiͲtal�thirty�miles�north�of�Boston�entertaining�the�soldiers,�the�war�finally�ended�and�the�
band�disbanded.�Edith�was�sent�home�to�Canton�aŌer�three�years�and�nine�months�of�service.��
Following�her�release�from�the�Army,�she�held�a�wide�assortment�of�jobs�including�working�for�the�telephone�company.�She�graduated�from�the�Canton�Actual�BusiͲness�College�and�secured�a�job�as�a�switchboard�operaͲtor�at�the�Milk�Company�before�joining�her�brother�as�a�student�at�Kent�State�University.�AŌer�graduaƟon,�she�taught�school�in�the�Canton�area�for�six�years.�Two�of�her�friends�invited�her�to�spend�the�summers�at�the�University�of�Illinois�where�she�got�her�Master’s�Degree�in�EducaƟon.��
Next�came�her�adventure�in�Europe.�She�was�introͲduced�to�the�opƟon�of�teaching�overseas�and�when�accepted�to�the�program,�taught�one�year�in�France�and�then�three�years�in�Germany,�teaching�the�giŌed�children.�One�of�the�teachers�wrote�music�for�the�stuͲdents�and�they�gave�concerts�with�Edith�direcƟng�the�orchestra.�During�this�Ɵme,�she�and�her�fellow�teachers�did�much�traveling�someƟmes�spending�weekends�in�Southern�Germany�on�the�ski�slopes�in�the�Alps.�One�Ɵme,�they�made�a�summer�trip�to�Jerusalem�and�BethͲlehem�which�included�a�camel�ride�in�Egypt.�What�won’t�this�woman�do?��AŌer�returning�from�Europe�and�reͲentering�the�educaͲƟonal�field,�she�and�her�good�friend,�Eunice,�ended�up�securing�jobs�out�in�Oregon�in�the�Lake�Oswego�school�district�from�which�she�eventually�reƟred.�All�totaled,�she�taught�for�31�years�rooming�with�Eunice�for�18�of�those�years.���������������������������������

The�FUNOlympics�turned�out�to�be�quite�evenƞul,�as�the�games�brought�out�some�compeƟƟve�spirits.�TradiͲƟonal�Ping�Pong�was�a�big�hit�among�staī,�and�the�Ping�Pong�Throw�and�AirͲplane�Toss�were�a�hit�among�the�resiͲdents.�Snow�Sculpture�and�the�SynͲchronized�Cheese�Ball�Toss�were�also�favorites.����The�winter�storm�brought�some�exͲciƟng�days�to�Hearthstone�as�well.�Snow�angels�were�made�as�well�as�a�handsome�snowman�in�Gazebo�Park.�

COME�SEE�OUR�NEW�BUS!!!��
At�the�end�of�February,�we�welcomed�our�new�bus�to�Hearthstone.�The�old�one�was�geƫng�very�Ɵred�and�major�inevitable�repairs�would�have�been�in�the�future.�Besides,�we�were�hoping�to�have�something�for�our�residents�that�didn’t�raƩle,�had�more�comfortable�seaƟng,�and�beƩer�temperaͲture�control.�Our�new�bus�has�all�of�the�above�plus�the�outside�has�beƩer�idenƟficaƟon�of�who�we�are�and�what�we�represent.�We�are�grateful�for�those�who�are�watching�out�for�the�needs�of�HearthͲstone�and�our�residents!�
While�teaching�in�Lake�Oswego,�she�aƩended�night�school�and�summer�school�at�Portland�State�UniͲversity�where�she�got�a�cerƟficate�from�the�State�of�Oregon�in�Library�Science.�At�Lake�Oswego,�she�taught�fourth�grade�for�eleven�years�and�spent�eleven�years�in�the�library�in�charge�of�books�and�audiovisual.���
Edith�has�had�a�colorful�and�full�life�with�parƟcipaͲƟon�in�everything�from�mulƟple�sports�to�music.�She�held�many�jobs�not�menƟoned�here�but��says�even�though�some�were�partͲƟme,�“they�all�added�to�the�richness�of�life.”�She�has�since�done�much�volunteer�work,�belonged�to�several�organiͲzaƟons,�and�especially�appreciates�her�Delta�Kappa�Gamma�Society�with�fellow�teachers.�She�is�curͲrently�a�blessing�at�Hearthstone�of�Beaverton�where�she�aƩends�church�services�and�parƟcipates�in�many�of�our�community’s�acƟviƟes.��

Hobart�Bird�moved�to�Hearthstone�on�Feb.�10th.�He�knew�his�wife,�Marian,�from�high�school�days�and�has�lived�in�the�PortͲland�area�for�most�of�his�life.�AŌer�a�Ɵme�with�the�Coast�Guard,�he�took�over�the�management�of�his�Dad’s�Columbia�Steel�company�and�was�the�CEO�for�most�of�his�working�life.�He�and�his�wife�had�nine�children�–�five�daughters�(all�beginͲning�with�the�leƩer�“M”)�and�four�sons.�Most�live�in�Oregon�but�one�lives�in�Chicago�and�another�in�Washington�D.C.��
Loyce�McAllister�joined�us�on�February�20th.�She�formerly�lived�at�Creekside�Village�where�she�sƟll�has�many�friends.�In�earlier�years,�Loyce�helped�to�manage,�rent,�clean,�paint�and�do�everything�for�a�fourͲplex�they�owned.�This�kept�her�busy�unƟl�they�moved�from�the�fourͲplex�to�a�home�when�the�kids�were�in�grade�school.�She�also�lived�in�SeaƩle�for�15�years�and�also�in�the�South�for�awhile.�Loyce’s�daughter,�Barbara,�lives�in�the�area�with�her�husband,�Roger,�and�children.�
Dee�Bridgeman�just�moved�in�on�Wednesday,�February�26.�She�has�a�son,�Steve,�and�daughter,�Linda,�who�lives�with�her�husband,�Paul,�in�Aloha.�Dee�was�born�in�Salem�and�has�also�lived�in�California�for�a�period�of�Ɵme.�She�has�worked�in�sales�in�the�past.�She�enjoys�reading,�parƟcularly�novels�by�Nora�Roberts�and�Arthur�Greeley�and�she�enjoys�good�music�–�swing,�jazz,�and�big�band.�She�should�fit�right�in�with�our�othͲer�music�lovers�at�Hearthstone!�
