BangalowProperty Management Specialists

We have climbed back up on our feet after the Global Financial Crash. We have had months of ridiculously heavy rain seriously affecting the livelihoods of so many of our local agricultural producers. Good friends among us have had to deal with serious illness – but despite all, hinterlanders and townsfolk alike are gearing up to take time out to celebrate at the most important event in the Bangalow calendar: the 111st Bangalow Show, being held this year on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 November.Staged annually by the Bangalow Agricultural

and Industrial Society, the Bangalow Show hasn’t lasted for so long without providing a venue where the world stops and pays homage to the land which supports us.Find a program and map out your days.

After the heated early Saturday morning hours, where the Pavilion is swathed in secrecy as

every item on exhibit is judged, at 2pm the grand parade begins, and this year, Kevin Jarrett opens the show. There’s the Showgirl competition, the ride-

on lawn mower races, the ironman event, the beef and dairy cattle, horses, poultry, pigeons, ducks and geese to see.The theme in the Pavilion (known as the

A&I Hall for the rest of the year) for this year’s show is Dogs, so be prepared for a

Within a few weeks the Historical Society, in conjunction with the Bangalow Chamber of Commerce, will begin a grand new project: the placement of brass plaques celebrating the early building heritage of this town. This will be accompanied by the start of guided walks to many of the places of interest. It is fascinating to gain an overview of how

town has changed since the late 1800s. How it has grown and contracted and grown again.

The owners of the picture show decided to abandon the program. The hotel had been condemned 12 months

earlier and a court order issued for its rebuilding. The Byron hotel replaced it in 1940 and forms the basic structure of what remains today.

Bangalow stonefruit growers estimate that their crop will be down about 40 per cent on last year’s production, due to the frequent heavy rainfalls. According to Ray Hick, of Heavenly Valley Farms, there are between 12 to 15 Bangalow stonefruit growers, who together produced about 500,000kg of fruit last year. “This year we’re likely to produce about

60,000 5kg trays, a total of 300,000kg. Though last year was a better season, the two previous seasons we’d been hard hit with hail.”

Heavy rain fell early in the season, damaging fruit. “The nectarines were cracked and peaches got very water damaged,” Mr Hick said. Damaged fruit is usually “given to the cows”, as there is no-one locally set up to make fruit juice or jam commercially. From Glenbrook Farm, Robert Buckley

reported a loss of about 50 per cent of his stone fruit due to heavy weather, though his mid-season peaches were affected the least. “Blueberries look OK, but the strawberries

have been a dead loss in the rain,” he said.

THE HEALING PROCESSContinuing our series on the folks behind some Bangalow businesses, Christobel Munson talks with

Anna Rolfes, MD, PhD, about her way of healing.

The ad is intriguing: ‘Nurture the healer within you”, it says. How is that possible? Dr Anna Rolfes, MD, PhD, started the

Institute for Vibrational Medicine in 1995 primarily as an educational facility to teach bio-energetic medicine and kinesiology. Her healing sessions aim to “help people access their innate potential for self-preservation and self-healing”.Dr Rolfes’ 40-year healing ‘pedigree’ is

extensive. Educated in Germany, she received her medical degree from the University of Heidelberg in the 1970s. Initially she was “very interested in the psycho-somatic and socio-economic factors contributing to disease” and completed a doctorate at that university in

medicine and specialised in musculoskeletal medicine. “In Germany, my training comprised both

surgical and non-surgical treatment for muscle and bone diseases,” she explained from her clinic overlooking the green rolling hills of Newrybar. In Dr Rolfes’ view, in the last decades of the 20th century, doctors were degraded to becoming ‘sales reps’ for the products of health industries. “What more can you do when you’re limited to 10-20 minute consultation times?” she asks. “As a result, many patients are not appropriately cared for by the treatment plans promoted by health industries.”

Taking a year off medical practice and travelling in Australia in 1987, she connected with healers and monks and cultivated a love for acupuncture, homeopathy, personal development and meditation techniques. Introduced to kinesiology, this led her to further research into muscle function and subtle energy (or chi), the topic of yet another PhD she undertook in Australia. “I was intrigued by kinesiology’s simple examination

dysfunction, then determining the best treatment to correct the problem.”In the mid 1990s Dr Rolfes decided to

practise and promote non-invasive health care therapies. She had observed that many patients responded well to complementary therapies. “I witnessed consistent improvement happening to some people in my care through homeopathy and acupuncture, in cases where mainstream medical intervention would have been often very invasive and crippling. Looking back to my education, I feel very fortunate that my wise surgical teachers emphasised to us students to - whenever possible - try the least

chance to heal by itself.”Today, most clients come for an average of

three visits, during which time she gives them directions and inspiration to heal from within. “I work with the innate healing ability of a person. The body is a big ecosystem constantly renewing itself. Within two years nearly every molecule in our body has been replaced. Using kinesiology muscle tests, I am able to observe

their health problem. Then we explore how they can come into a more stable and healthy state.” Music has been a life-long interest. She

sings in a choir and plays classical guitar. In any spare time, Dr Rolfes works on generating a rainforest corridor with neighbours.

22 BANGALOW’S HEARTBEAT

We have been running a Nashua writing and photo competition and while the number of entries was small, the quality was fantastic. The winning entry for the open section is a poem by Michael

Douglas (see right). The range of photos was fantastic: Jayne Douglas took the August Morning photo, above – and it was the winner of the open section, and Gerry Rhis took the Sunset photo, below – and it was the runner up in the open section. Jacinta Lithgow

NASHUA NOTES

The Hills of BangalowGentle as the call of the morning mist and rain,

The birds give their gentle song of quietude,

My heart now deepened, the hues of the morning glow, For I am of the hills, the hills of Bangalow.

The grass illuminates with viridescent green,

Wompoo and wren, at home in this special place,

Harmonious as I dream, ‘neath the branches low,For I am of the hills, the hills of Bangalow.

My home, my home awaits with its warm desire,

Where verse is shared, and songs of the soul are sung,

Our words, they are alive, our prayers, they are aglowFor I am of the hills, the hills of Bangalow.

Invoke all this beauty, this holy accolade,

For I am of the hills, the hills of Bangalow.

1. Barefoot Bowlswe had a great day with the sun shining after

bowlers who won a lot of prizes throughout the day, enjoyed a snag and bought some

winning and losing rinks with many smiles all round. Was a great effort by all who

raised for the Cancer Council in memory of all our loved ones that have been affected by cancer..Kayes Kids Team want to thank our

community and supporters.

2. Trivia Night The next team event, planned for 27 November, is a Trivia night

3. Byron Shire Relay for Life 2011 The committee is looking to have some more teams register and for our community to be more involved in such a special event. At the moment we do not have a lot of teams registering in Bangalow. For those interested, please contact me. The better the event, the more support we can provide to people who’s lives are touched by cancer.Amy Garang-Hall 0404 514 631 or 6687 1183

Because you’re important

Pink Ribbon DayPam Le May cooked gorgeous food inspired by the colour pink for her annual fundraiser lunch at her Keith Street home. The guests helped raise $1000 for the cause. The pink idea is for breast cancer but Pam wants the money to go to research for all types of cancer, including for men.
