THE HUMAN HEART

Page 3: Heart Lesson

INTRODUCTION• The heart is the most vital

organ• It doesn’t go through a

difficult step for it to work though

• The heart is located behind the lungs in the ribs tilted to the left

• Your heart is a muscular organ that acts like a pump

Page 4: Heart Lesson

HOW THE HEART WORKS• Your heart is the center

of the circulatory system • The heart uses electrical

signals to make the heart’s walls contract

• When the heart contracts blood is pumped to all parts of the body

Page 5: Heart Lesson

THE ANATOMY• The heart has 4

chambers• 2 ventricles (right and

left)• These are muscular

chambers that move blood out of the heart’

• The 2 atriums hold the blood and at the right moment empty the blood into the right and left ventricles

Page 6: Heart Lesson

THE ANATOMY

• The Aorta distributes blood throughout the whole body

• The pulmonary artery carries blood from the heart to the lungs

• The pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood to the left Atrium

The Location of the Heart• Your heart is

located under your ribcage and is tilted to the left which is why everyone thinks it is on the left side of your body.

Page 9: Heart Lesson

The heart is located left of the body midline posterior to the sternum in the mediastinum.

Heart disease

• Heart disease is the number 1 health problem for both men and women in the united states

• Heart disease is caused by having high cholesterol and it builds up in your arteries

• When this happens it stops the flow of blood • These things can cause heart disease

Page 54: Heart Lesson

The pumping action of the heart is essential to maintain blood circulation. It beats about 75 times per minute. The amount of blood pumped from one ventricle per minute is called the cardiac output.

Page 55: Heart Lesson

The cardiovascular system consists of the heart, arteries, capillaries, and veins.

Page 56: Heart Lesson

The heart is at the center of the circulatory system and it connects with arteries (which transport blood away from the heart) and veins (which transport blood towards the heart). Between the two are capillaries.

Page 57: Heart Lesson

The heart propels blood in one direction. It contracts and relaxes. The right side pumps blood to the lungs. The left side pumps to the rest of the body.

Page 58: Heart Lesson
Page 59: Heart Lesson

The pulmonary circuit consists of the right side of the heart (right atrium and right ventricle), the pulmonary arteries, which convey poorly oxygenated blood to the lungs, and the pulmonary veins, which convey oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium.

Page 60: Heart Lesson

The systemic circuit consists of the chambers on the left side of the heart (left atrium and left ventricle) and all the named blood vessels that carry blood to the tissues (arteries) and all the named blood vessels that return the blood from the tissues (veins) back to the right atrium of the heart. The tissue capillaries are included.

Aorta

Superior vena cava

Inferior vena cava

Facts of the heart

• Your Heart pumps about 103, 680 times but a child's hearts beats between 129, 600 and 172, 800 times per day. It pumps about one million barrels of blood in a life time.
