HEARTY LUNCHES Gypsy QuartetSaturday 11 January 8.30 - 10.45pm Shire Oak The Matt Holborn Quartet is an exciting young gypsy jazz band based in Leeds. Playing a mix of gypsy swing, jazz standards, bebop and world music, the quartet’s main aim is to keep this style of jazz fresh, new and exciting whilst paying homage to the traditions of the music. “Amongst other young jazz violinists in the UK, Matt stands out with his instantly recognisable sound, a good use of violin techniques and intelligent musicality.” Tim Kliphuis

Lesser spottedSaturday 18 January 7.30 - 10.30pmShire OakBringing together some favourites of the Leeds jazz scene, this project is loosely focused on exploring a less well-known repertoire from the Bebop, West Coast and Hard Bop traditions. Strong melodies are emphasised with compositions and contrafacts from the likes of Lee Konitz and Oliver Nelson, and respite offered by music from the Greek film composer, Vangelis.

Los CamaradasFriday January 24 8 - 10.45pmShire OakLos Camaradas is a community salsa band, based in Leeds with players from across Yorkshire who have been playing together for over 8 years. Salsa is dance music for the ears, hips and feet! The current line-up is 18 people, including vocals, trumpets, trombones, flute, saxes, bass, piano, timbales and other latin percussion. Band leader and coach is trombonist Jonn Enright.

Valentine’s Dance with Little Big BandSaturday 15 February 7.30 - 10.30pmShire OakLittle Big Band is an 18 piece outfit with the classic line-up of saxes, trombones, trumpets and a rhythm section, with three great vocalists. They play music to get people dancing in a variety of styles from the swing era of the’ 40s, through the “Rat Pack” music of Sinatra and his associates to some more modern funk and soul numbers, with a smattering of disco towards the end of the evening!

Dominic J Marshall Saturday 22 february 7.30 - 10.30pmShire OakJazz-at-heart present an acoustic piano gig. Dominic brings together a great heritage of the past, but also something very fresh and new, all the within the confines of a simple acoustic piano. He was selected unanimously by a jury of Jamie Cullum, Gilles Peterson and Jez Nelson to perform at ‘BBC Introducing’ showcase, Band on the Wall, as part of Manchester Jazz Festival.
