AIRBUS REVEALS THE BENEFITS OF AN ENTERPRISE APPROACH TO RFID

Airbus, the 2008 RFID Journal Award winner for best implementation, has been pioneering best practices inthe adoption of RFID by deploying the technology as“business radar” across all aspects of its business, including supply chain logistics, transportation, manufacturing and aircraft in-flight operations. This approach, which leverages a passive and active RFIDreader infrastructure for multiple applications operatingon a common software platform, has yielded significantbenefits. The head of the company’s RFID program willexplain some ways in which Airbus leverages its RFID“business radar,” as well as some of the benefits thetechnology helps to deliver.

SPEAKER:Carlo K. Nizam, Head of Value Chain Visibility and RFID

We can’t just cover everyone by staying in our office and waiting for calls—that’s really why we were coming...I’ve mostly been to the manufacturing track. I think it is interesting, because it’s close to what we do in aerospace at Airbus. We share some common objectivesand common expectations.—Gerd Wolfram, Managing Directo, Metro Group

Coming to this RFID Journal conference is always very interesting.—Paul-Antoine Calandreau, Flyable RFID Project Leader, Airbus Resource Planning-OCR, Airbus

We attended a presentation from the steel industry in Germany that was really good. It isvery close to the environment we work in, with lots of steel and harsh environment—all thisweather and challenges that we have.—Emil Andersen, Business Analyst, Conoco Phillips

REACHING OUT TO A NEW AUDIENCE WITH NFCThe Centre Pompidou, an art museum in Paris, France, is using amobile phone system known as Smart Muse to attract young visi-tors to its new Teen Gallery. As part of a French national projectsupported by the Ministère de l’Economie, de l’Industrie et del’Emploi, and the Direction Générale de la Compétitivité, de l’in-dustrie et des Services, the objective is to put Near Field Communi-cation (NFC) technology into consumers’ hands. The Centre

Pompidou is employing RFID-enabled mobile phones to reach young visitorsthrough the medium to which they are accustomed—social networking sites, such as Facebook and MySpace. In this session, learn how each phone the mu-seum provides is equipped with an NFC RFID module and an antenna, and howpassive 13.56 MHz RFID tags compliant with NFC standards are attached toposters and exhibits in the Teen Gallery. When a user moves his or her phoneclose to a tag, the handset will read that tag’s unique ID number. Using softwareresiding on the phone, as well as on the server, the phone will access the serverto download content related to that particular poster or exhibit, and display it onthe handset’s screen.SPEAKER:Mauricio Estrada Muñoz, Project Manager, Youth Programs, Centre Pompidou

AUTOMATING ASSET MANAGEMENT, ORDERS WITH RFIDThree years after deploying passive 125 kHz RFID tags to track itstool usage, the Byrne Group, a U.K. concrete substructure con-struction firm, has expanded its use of the system to identify usersof its 16,000 assets—including tools, excavators, trailers and otherheavy equipment, as well as consumables, such as gloves andboots—across its numerous construction projects and to managethe online ordering of those assets. Hear how the firm expects to

recoup its investment by 2011.SPEAKER:Matthew Preston, Group IT Director, Byrne Group

EXPLORING RFID AND RELATED EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES FOR CONSTRUCTIONAs the construction and facility-management industries begin todeploy RFID solutions, new issues beyond the selection of readersand tags begin to emerge. This session will explore some of theseissues, including infrastructure setup (communication options toconsider in an open environment), alternative mobile devices asreaders (digital pens and tablets, interactive hands-free or head-mounted mobile devices, and cell phone readers), and unique is-

sues involving rugged and metal-friendly tags (including ATEX certification anddata standards).SPEAKER: Francis Rabuck, Director, Intelligent Infrastructure Lab, Bentley Systems

PACK AND SEA USES RFID TO AUTOMATE CRATE TRACKINGPack and Sea, a Danish company that leases crates to the fishing in-dustry, is employing RFID to track the locations of its plastic crates. The containers hold fish after they are caught, and later as they aresold at market. The company had relied mainly on pen and paperto record who had crates and when they needed to be returned. The firm turned to RFID to streamline the tracking of crates and in-voicing of customers. Learn how the system delivers a real-time

overview of the number of fish crates in various parts of the logistics chain, aswell as providing documentation of the actual location and status of the individ-ual fish crate, whether onboard the vessel, at the auction or at the manufacturer.SPEAKER: Bent Kirk, Managing Director, Pack and Sea

RFID HELPS CAR MAKER SAVE LABOR AND IMPROVE BUSINESS METRICSA high-performance automobile manufacturer is employing RFID to track themovements of its custom-made vehicles as they pass through the finishingprocess, to ensure they are produced according to the demands of the au-tomaker’s customers, and to provide business analytics. The company installedthe RTLS at its production facility in the United Kingdom in early 2009. The sys-tem informs the automaker of the whereabouts of cars during the off-tracks (fin-ishing) process, as well as how long each process takes to complete, and wherebottlenecks occur. Prior to the system’s deployment, having visibility of cars re-moved from the line had been nearly impossible without manually checking forthem within the facility. In this session, hear how the system’s server provides amap of the facility, with an icon indicating each car’s specific location, therebyenabling employees to see where each vehicle is located.SPEAKER: Xxxxx Xxxxxxxx, Xxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxx, Xxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxx

AUTO IMPORTER USES RFID TO REDUCE LABOR COSTS AND EXPEDITE VEHICLE MOVEMENTColmobil, Israel’s largest automobile importer, is employing anRFID system to decrease labor costs and expedite the processing ofthe 35,000 to 45,000 cars it imports every year, and sells through45 dealerships. The firm permanently fits each new vehicle with a3/4-inch by 4-inch EPC Gen 2 passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF)RFID tag as it is being unloaded from the ship. Learn how the staffuses a handheld computer coupled with an RFID interrogator and a

bar-code scanner to locate and confirm they have the correct car before pickingit up. Hear how the technology is being utilized to accurately determine final de-tailing, safety inspections and registration with the motor vehicle license bu-reau, and to provide that information to customers.SPEAKER:Gil Katz, CIO, Colmobil Corp.

DRIVING DOWN COSTS WITH RFIDRFID can play a key role in helping companies manage the inven-tory of materials arriving on a construction site, as well as reducetheft and improve the tracking of tools and other critical assets.Learn how Byrne Group, one of the United Kingdom’s fastest-growing companies in the project management and constructionservices industry, used RFID technology to take control of its assetsby improving visibility. Hear how the tagged assets are being in-

stantly scanned using handheld computers, enabling the firm to manage in-spection schedules for each asset. SPEAKER:Neill Pawsey, Programme Manager, Construction Opportunities in Mobile IT

IMPROVED TRACKING EFFICIENCY WITH RFIDThe Blood and Tissue Bank of Balearic Islands (FBSTIB), located onthe island of Mallorca, is using a UHF RFID solution to track hemo-derivatives from the point at which the blood is drawn at a mobileblood-donation clinic—typically, a bus or similar vehicle—until itleaves for a hospital. The process is more efficient (because it elimi-nates the need to scan a label’s bar codes or visually read itsprinted text) and safer (because it ensures that mistakes are not

made). Hear how FBSTIB tested the system this year in several pilots at theblood bank, before beginning the permanent installation—which includes afixed reader at the plasma storage freezer to capture tags as they enter andleave it, handheld interrogators to locate items within the freezer, and desktopreaders to update the tag data as blood is processed. SPEAKER:Dr. Josep Muncunill, CEO, Blood and Tissue Bank of Balearic Islands

USING RFID TO BETTER TRACK SPECIAL SHIPMENTS AT A SEAPORT TERMINALSeaport terminals handle cargo contianers very efficiently, butwhen cargo is too large to be put on a container or can’t be drivenon its own, the process often breakds down. The pitch of every con-tainer operated on a container terminal is stored in a database, butthe pitch of a roll trailer used for items that can’t be put in a con-tainer is usually stored manually on paper, resulting in a longsearch effort for individual roll trailers. In this session, hear the re-

sults of an automatic-identification project conducted by one German port, using a passive RFID system to identify specialized high and heavy roll trailers.SPEAKERS:Wolf Lampe, Manager, Bremen Institute for Production & Logistics (BIBA)

In advance of the spring-summer 2010 sea-son, approximately 30,000 garments were tagged at a distributioncenter and followed to a store, enabling real-time visibility of logis-

tics flows. In this session, hear the results of this groundbreaking pilot, and learnhow radio frequency identification benefits logistics and store processes.SPEAKER: Antonio Rizzi, Ph.D., Full Professor—Industrial Logistics & Supply Chain

Management, University of Parma

HOW RETAILERS BENEFIT FROM USING RFID TO IMPROVE INVENTORY ACCURACYFor the past several years, the University of Arkansas’ RFID Re-search Center has been studying the impact various retailers haveachieved by employing radio frequency identification to improveinventory accuracy and replenishment. The center has now aggre-gated this information, and plans to provide baseline data reveal-ing the benefits the typical apparel retailer can expect to achievewith RFID. Attendees will also learn how the technology can be ap-

plied to improving inventory accuracy and reducing the out-of-stock problemthat has long plagued retailers.SPEAKER: Justin Patton, RFID Lab Director, University of Arkansas

USING RFID TO REDUCE THEFTGerry Weber International, a German manufacturer of women’sfashions, is applying EPC Gen 2 RFID tags to the 25 million gar-ments it produces annually. The company also plans to roll outRFID technology at 150 of its company-owned retail stores in Ger-many and abroad. The application is designed to improve the effi-ciency of its incoming goods and inventory processes, and tofunction as an electronic article surveillance (EAS) system.

SPEAKER: Christian von Grone, CIO, GERRY WEBER INTERNATIONAL AG

RFID AND WIRELESS SYSTEMS FOR INTELLIGENT AIRPORTSAirports and other large infrastructures have diverse communica-tions needs that include complex and often varying service require-ments, traffic profiles and user expectations. The Intelligent Airport(TINA) project was created to address these future and presentneeds. This three-year research project is being carried out by theUniversity of Cambridge, UCL and the University of Leeds. The proj-ect aims to develop a self-organizing, wired/wireless converged

system using a next-generation advanced wired and wireless network that willmeet the needs of a future airport environment. In this session, hear how RFIDcan manage a wide range of fixed and mobile equipment. Uses for RFID in largefacilities include information and entertainment services, security cameras, bio-metric sensors and explosive and chemical detectors, as well as logistical sup-port for retailers, facility services and operations. With such a capability, thissystem concept is also expected to find applications outside the airport sector.SPEAKER: Sithamparanathan Sabesan, Researcher, Centre for Advanced Photonic and
