Airport CitiesWhy The Fuss About Airports?

Reason 1: “…global GDP has risen 154%, and thevalue of world trade has grown 355%. But thevalue of air cargo has climbed an astonishing1,395%.”

Reason 2: “Today, 40% of the total economic valueof all goods produced in the world … is shipped byair (and that goes for more than 50% of total U.S.exports, which are valued at $554 billion)”

Reason 3: “… major airports are both a country’scalling card and handshake—it’s the first thingpeople see when they enter a country and it’s thelast thing they see when they leave.”

Aside from being one of the busiest (and richest)industries in the world, aviation is also in the midstof a massive development boom. Non-aviationrelated revenue, low-cost carriers and theavailability of world-class business facilities aregaining momentum as important drivers of airports.

In view of this rapid growth and expansion, thedevelopment of airport cities is the next logicalstep for international airports. Whether it is a cargohub, logistics central or a residential developmentfor employees, property developments on the landbank surrounding airports are sprouting up all overthe world.

Attend IBC Asia’s Airport Cities Conference anddiscover the potential of airport cities, and howthey are the future of aviation.

About Your Workshop Leaders:

Nicholas Stevens, Senior Research Associate,Airport Metropolis Research Project, Australia

Mr. Nicholas Stevens is a Landscape Architect

and Urban Planner with a background in regional

planning and urban design. Mr Stevens is currently a

Senior Research Associate with the Airport Metropolis

research programme in the Faculty of Built Environment

and Engineering at the Queensland University of

Technology (QUT). He is presently evaluating the

and regional planning within the context of cooperative

airport development.

Arron Walker PhD, Research Fellow,

Airport Metropolis Research Project, Australia

Arron Walker has recently completed his PhD

in Spatial Information Retrieval at the Queensland

University of Technology (QUT). This research

developed intelligent spatial data retrieval

methodologies for Geographic Information Systems

(GIS). In particular, he constructed a Bayesian framework

that learns causal relationships between spatial datasets

from historical expert knowledge. Dr Walker has

extensive industrial and academic experience in Virtual

Reality, Decision Support Systems and GIS. He is

currently part of the Airport Metropolis Research Project

led by Dr Baker at QUT. As part of this project, he is

conducting spatial analysis of historical data to discover

the factors that are necessary for an airport to make a

successful transition to an Airport Metropolis.
