Letter From the PresidentDear Friends, The beginning of the New Year is a time of celebration and hope – celebration of what we have accomplished and how we have persevered, and hope that the next 12 months will bring good fortune, prosperity and, equally as important, good health. It is always our hope at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital that the New Year brings everyone in your family good health.

For some, that may seem contradictory considering we are an organization whose existence is dependent on treating those in need of medical attention, whether it is due to a chronic condition or a sudden illness or accident. But we are also an incredible community resource, offering a wealth of services aimed not just at healing, but also to educate, to comfort, to support, and, most importantly, to keep you healthy and out of the hospital all together – our ultimate success in partnership with you.

Throughout the rest of this magazine you will find articles related to our expanding services and growing list of physicians, all of which are here to meet your needs. In addition, if you open to the center of this publication you will discover classes, services and support groups designed to assist you in all chapters of life − from infancy to the golden years. We are an invaluable resource and we tailor what we offer to the specific needs of our community, making sure we address the health issues most important to you.

Lifespan is a term most everyone is familiar with, but the term healthspan is fast becoming a buzzword in discussions of medical care. New discoveries and technological advancements in the world of health care can significantly increase your lifespan, but your healthspan – how well you live those added years – is something we are passionate about helping you improve.

It is hard, as the New Year draws nearer, not to make resolutions and predictions of what the next 12 months will hold, and equally difficult not to look back and re-evaluate the past year. We hope that as you look back at your healthcare needs during 2015, MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital played an important role in helping you heal as well as keeping you healthy. And in 2016, we pledge to work hard for you so that

you will continue to put your trust in us, that we may help you enjoy good health.

FEATURED ON OUR COVER

Making the decision to have laparoscopic surgery to correct her diveriticulosis was not easy for Jennifer Bohner. Wanting to avoid having emergency surgery to correct the condition, Jennifer found Dr. H. Charles Kim, colon and rectal surgeon with MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, who operated on her in July to remove a section of her intestine. “Getting this surgery done electively made so much more sense, rather than worrying about the possibility of emergency surgery,” said Jennifer. “It has made a big difference in my quality of life.”

Small Incision, Big Results

she would probably need surgery, but was told there was no rush.

Always present, however, was the possibility that an attack could

lead to a rupture which would require emergency surgery.

“If that happened, I would have had to have a colostomy bag -

no one wants that at any age,” Jennifer said. “So I chose to have

elective surgery to fix the condition.”

Jennifer began doing research and asking for referrals from her

primary care physician as well as friends. She knew she wanted

to have the procedure to correct her condition performed

laparoscopically and began looking for a surgeon. It was a friend

who led her to H. Charles Kim, MD, colorectal surgeon with

ACTIVE AGAIN. Jennifer Bohner and Scot Schofield enjoy an afternoon walk with their

dog, Max. Opting for laparoscopic surgery to address recurring episodes of diverticulitis

has allowed Jennifer to return to a more active lifestyle. Laparoscopic surgery offers many

benefits including less pain and external scarring, as well as faster healing.

Waiting in the Emergency Department suffering

from crippling abdominal pain is not a situation

anyone would want to find themselves in, but that

is exactly where Jennifer Bohner found herself six

years ago when she experienced her first episode

of diverticulitis.

“It was extremely painful,” Jennifer said. “I was

doubled over and it was very difficult to walk.”

Diverticulosis is a common disorder in which small

pouches or diverticula develop in the lining of the

digestive tract. Diverticulitis is painful when one

of those sacs becomes inflamed or infected. Most

often affecting people older than 60, it is rarely

seen in patients younger than 30. Jennifer was 35.

“The first time it happened, I wasn’t sure what

it was. It was very painful and I was out of work

about a week and on antibiotics,” Jennifer said.

“Afterward, I tried to eat right and do better, but I

ended up having flare ups.” Jennifer found herself

returning to the Emergency Department about

once a year due to the condition.

“After the first flare up, it seemed to never really

go away. I could tell when it was going to happen

again,” she said. As the years passed, the condition

began affecting Jennifer’s daily life.

“If I would be out walking for awhile - for an hour

or so – my side would get so tender. I didn’t want

to do anything too strenuous because I knew it

would be painful,” she said.

Jennifer eventually underwent testing – a

colonoscopy and barium enema - and was told

“Dr. Kim had a lot of experience and had trained others to

do this surgery,” she said. “He sat and listened to me, and I

felt comfortable with him the moment I met him.”

Jennifer underwent laparoscopic surgery in late July

to remove 7 inches of her intestine damaged from

diveriticulosis. The surgery involved two small incisions and

a third incision to insert a camera through her naval.

“Before the surgery, Dr. Kim made sure I could reach him if I

had questions. He said, ‘I know this is a big decision and you

need to be sure.’

“After surgery, Dr. Kim had me get up and start moving

around almost immediately. It was painful, but I felt like I

had awesome support. Dr. Kim came in and checked on me

frequently, and everyone caring for me made me feel like I

was the only patient at the hospital. Everyone was so nice. I

am so grateful.”

Jennifer’s surgery took place at the end of July. She was

out of work for a week and went back to work part time for

about a week. She had two follow-up visits with Dr. Kim to

check her progress. “I would say it took me close to a month

before I started feeling close to 100 percent,” she said. “Now

I feel like I am pretty much back to myself and I am glad I

had the surgery.”

This fall Jennifer traveled to California for vacation and was

able to enjoy being active once again.

“If I had to have this surgery done again, Dr. Kim would be

the doctor I would want to do it,” Jennifer said. “Getting this

surgery done electively made so much more sense than

having to have emergency surgery. It has made a

big difference in my quality of life.”

Fahmi Fahmi, MD, pictured with his staff in MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital’s Primary Care office in Great Mills, Maryland.

A Familiar Face in Family Care

Visiting the doctor at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital’s Primary Care office, for many patients, may feel like catching up with an old friend. Fahmi Fahmi, MD, began seeing both adult and pediatric patients at the Great Mills, Maryland, location in July. Board certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics, Dr. Fahmi has been in practice in St. Mary’s County for more than 16 years and is excited not only about seeing familiar patients, but also about treating their children, and, in some cases, even their grandchildren.

“I think of my patients like my family; I don’t think of them like my patients,” Dr. Fahmi said. “ I usually like to ask myself, ‘If I were a patient, what would I think?’ I think this is a better way of delivering care.”

Dr. Fahmi is not just focused on caring for the individual,

Dr. Fahmi Now Seeing Patients at Great Mills Location

but also stresses the importance of community health. As medical director of MedStar St. Mary’s Health Connections — the community outreach department of the hospital — and the MedStar St. Mary’s Primary Care office, Dr. Fahmi hopes to bring much-needed health resources to southern St. Mary’s County.

“The patient population here has complex medical conditions,” said Dr. Fahmi. “It presents a challenge, not just from the medical aspect, but from the standpoint of community health.”

In the near future, MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital’s Primary Care office will host Health Connections educational events during the week after office hours. “Our patients are offered the services of Health Connections and Health Connections is offered the services of this office, so it is a win-win situation helping to create a closed loop of care,” said Dr. Fahmi.

Get to Know Rohit Jain, MDMedStar St. Mary’s Hospital is pleased to welcome Rohit Jain, MD, a full-time endocrinologist practicing at MedStar Medical Group Specialty Office in Leonartown, Maryland.

What is your philosophy of care? I believe in fully including patients in their care; care should not be dictatorial. My role is to educate patients and guide them on how to best use medications available. So many people have diabetes, it is a daily struggle – it is not a one-time fix.

What can patients expect from you as their endocrinologist? I hope to bring patients up-to-date with advancements and guide them through the multitude of choices available. They can expect me to listen to them. I am happy to discuss patients’ questions − the more they want to learn, the better it is for everyone involved.

EVAR Procedure Can Save Time, Travel and LivesA newer, non-invasive surgical procedure to repair an abdominal aortic aneurysm is now being offered at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, saving patients both recovery and travel time. The repair procedure is known as EVAR or endovascular aneurysm repair.

According to Arthur Flatau III, MD, vascular surgeon at MedStar St. Mary’s, an abdominal aortic aneurysm is a weakening in the body’s main artery. Repairing an abdominal aortic aneurysm used to require a painful incision from the breast bone to the pubic bone and an extensive, complicated recovery, including days in intensive care and, quite possibly, time spent on a ventilator. It also meant traveling to Washington, D.C., or Baltimore for the procedure.

Thanks to stent technology, the surgeon now makes only a one or two inch-long incision and places a catheter inside the patient’s aorta. A device designed to support the artery from the inside and secure the weak artery is laced through the catheter. “The recovery from an EVAR procedure is faster and much less painful than the traditional surgery,” said Dr. Flatau. “A healthy patient can typically go home in the

next day or two.”

An aortic aneurysm may not cause symptoms until it begins to leak or expand. “A patient may happen to be undergoing diagnostic screenings for seemingly unrelated problems, such as back or kidney issues, before an aneurysm is detected,” said Dr. Flatau. For this reason, MedStar St. Mary’s offers free vascular screening programs twice a month at its medical office in Charlotte Hall, Maryland. During the ultrasound screenings, medical technicians look for carotid blockages or stenosis, aneurysms, and check the blood pressure of the arms and legs to ensure there are no blockages.

“I am pleased to work with MedStar St. Mary’s Perioperative Team and Interventional Radiology Team to deliver noninvasive EVAR surgery and other vascular procedures and preventive measures closer to home for our Southern Maryland patients,” said Dr. Flatau.

Pictured above: During a follow-up visit with William Hubbard, vascular surgeon Arthur Flatau III, MD, talks with the veteran after a walk together at the VA Hospital’s campus in Charlotte Hall, Maryland. William is recuperating from an endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) performed by Dr. Flatau. Minimally invasive, EVAR surgery is now available conveniently close to home at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital.

LABORATORY CENTER OPENS IN OUTPATIENT PAVILIONThe Outpatient Pavilion welcomed another new addition this summer in the form of an Outpatient Laboratory Center. Patients who need outpatient lab work will now report to the Outpatient Pavilion instead of the laboratory in the main hospital. A private registration office is located on the ground floor of the Pavilion with a lab draw area on the second floor across from the elevators. Patient parking is available near both Pavilion entrances. Outpatient Lab hours are from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 7 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. For more information call 301-475-6133 or 240-434-7497. Please note: RhoGam injections should continue to be picked up from the Laboratory inside of the hospital.

WATSON NAMED PRESIDENT OF STATE BOARD OF NURSINGMaryLou Watson, Vice President, Nursing at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, was recently appointed President of the Maryland Board of Nursing. The board regulates the practice of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives, nurse practitioners, nursing assistants, medication technicians, and electrologists. “I am excited to work with nurses across the state and understand nursing issues from a statewide perspective,” she said. Watson began working at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital in November 2006. She directs nursing services and establishes quality standards for nursing care, treatment and practice.

UNDER CONSTRUCTIONVisitors to the hospital this winter may notice a few “Under Construction” signs as they navigate the halls. Changes are underway in the Emergency Department which will help make room for a new Outpatient Pharmacy and expand the patient waiting area, and the registration area near the main entrance of the hospital which will be used primarily for same-day surgery registration. Please bear with us as we strive to expand the services we offer you.

LIVING LEGACY FLAG TO HONOR DONORSFor years, MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital has actively supported the Living Legacy Foundation (LLF). The LLF is a non-profit health organization credited with saving and enhancing lives through organ and tissue donation and transplantation. To honor donors, MSMH recently began flying the LLF flag for one week following a donation. Tissue donation can be recovered from bone, skin, pericardium, heart valves, saphenous veins, other blood vessels, soft tissue, eye corneas, cartilage, and nerves. Organ donation can be recovered from heart, lungs, liver, pancreas, kidneys, and intestines. Numerous lives can be saved from just one donor.

KOPPELS VISIT PULMONARY CENTERGrace Anne Dorney Koppel, the spokesperson for the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute’s campaign, “COPD: Learn More, Breathe Better,” stopped in for a visit at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital’s Grace Anne Dorney Pulmonary and Cardiac Rehabilitation Center in July. Grace and her husband, Ted (former host of ABC’s “Nightline”), funded the center through the Dorney-Koppel Family Charitable Foundation after Grace was diagnosed with COPD in 2001. The center was opened in January 2010. For information on the Grace Anne Dorney Center, call 301-475-6065.

HAGGERTY NAMED WASHINGTONIAN TOP DOCTORJean Marie Haggerty, MD, was recently named one of Washingtonian’s 2015 Top Docs. Dr. Haggerty is board-certified in pediatrics and practices with MedStar Georgetown Pediatrics in the Shanti Medical Center in Leonardtown, Maryland. She has more than 15 years experience and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. For information about Dr. Haggerty, call 301-475-4610.

family AffairJean Loffler continues to be grateful for all Hospice did for her family during her late husband Buddy’s terminal illness. The Leonardtown High School teacher wants others to receive the same care when they go through a similar journey. As a result, she and her daughters sponsor a tree for the Hospice Festival of Trees.

“The first year my father passed away we chose to put together all the money my sister, Laura, mom and I would typically spend on Christmas gifts for our dad in order to be able to give to this event,” said Jean’s daughter, Lynn Baumann of Hollywood, Maryland. “We started with a tree and then added a wreath. “It’s what our dad would have wanted. He was a very giving person.”

“Giving to Hospice and the Festival of Trees feels like I’m getting a present,” said Lynn. “We all love that after the event the tree will be donated to a family or an organization with a real need or it can be auctioned off to bring in more support for all that Hospice does. It is so important for us to help Hospice give to others.”

That sentiment is echoed by Jean’s granddaughter, Claire, who said it keeps her grandpa’s memory alive. “We want to help care for others the way they did for Pop Pop.”

Beyond BusinessPaul Ausley wants to ensure that Hospice will always be around for all who need it. The president of Ausley Associates, Inc., is dedicated to providing support to the local community, and serving as the main sponsor of the annual Festival of Trees is one way to do so. “This event helps build a sense of community,” said Paul. Having grown up in a military family, he understands the need to establish roots and make connections. “Hospice touches everyone,” he said, “and this holiday event helps to build awareness of Hospice across the county, encourages family participation and raises money for all the services Hospice provides.”

Ausley’s corporate communications specialist, Michelle Connolly, says that one of the reasons she was attracted to the company was because of its commitment to local charitable organizations, especially Hospice. She’s experienced first-hand how Hospice helps patients and family members cope during a critical time and loves

helping with the festival. “Being the main sponsor since 2010 means more than just making a donation. We help to defray costs and raise money that would otherwise be required of families in their time of need. Sponsorships from companies like Ausley allow patients to continue to receive care when personal funds run dry. The best part is that all the funds raised go directly to caring for this community.”

“As the defense industry continues to face declining budgets, many local charitable organizations are suffering,” said Paul. “It is more important than ever to support Hospice over the long run. It’s good for the community, for families and, ultimately, for your employees. Hospice helps everyone cope during a most difficult time.”

Paul Ausley and Michelle Connolly

Jean and her daughters, Lynn (above) and Laura, are grateful for how Hospice helped their family during a critical time. The family’s support of the Festival of Trees helps keep Hospice care available for others in need.

Healing Matters Celebrating

3 Years

DID YOU KNOW? The Wound Healing Center is equipped with two state-of-the-art hyperbaric oxygen therapy chambers, pictured below, which use a combination of high pressure and pure oxygen to help patients heal quicker.

Wound Healing Center Top Three Diagnoses: Venous leg ulcers Diabetic wound ulcers Pressure ulcers

STRESS Let’s face it — who wouldn’t want to remove the stress generated by a busy day? The playful “purr” or welcoming “ruff” of a pet companion may be the answer. Taking an extra long walk with your pet or simply stroking a cat or dog can release endorphins that calm the body and release tension. Don’t have a pet? Get your fix at a pet store or by visiting a friend or family member who does.

The third anniversary of the MedStar Health Wound Healing Center is also a reason to celebrate new leadership and several new staff. Pictured above clockwise from front: Clinical Coordinator Jodi Black, RN; Hyperbaric Technician Lori Roper, AA, NRP; Karen DeSoi, RN; Dawn Staats, RN; Clinical Program Director Charlene Rohulich, RN, BSN, MBA; and Front Office Coordinator Denise Tucker.

It isn’t often you hear a gong clanging inside a hospital. Yet, that is exactly what happens each time a patient completes treatment at the MedStar Health Wound Healing Center at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital. This is how the staff and patients celebrate healing.

Another celebration is taking place as well. It’s been three years since our Wound Healing Center at the hospital opened its doors to patients for the treatment of even the most complex nonhealing wounds. The inviting outpatient setting offers a convenient, comfortable environment that goes hand-in-hand with expert care and personalized treatment regimens.

“Care is customized for each individual’s special needs,’’ said Charlene Rohulich, RN, BSN, MBA, the operations specialist for the center. “Patients see the same nurses or clinical technicians each and every time they come for treatment. This helps to build close relationships and that provides a patient with a solid level of comfort and instills trust.”

Designed with patient comfort in mind, the center offers a wide variety of clinically proven treatment options and services, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The facility is state-of-the-art with the latest technologies to help care for patients with venous stasis, diabetes, pressure sores, burns and other post-surgical and nonhealing wounds. In addition to the actual wound care, medication and diet plans are reviewed and designed in consult with each patient’s primary physician.

There is a rise in chronic wounds due to contributing factors such as an aging population, poor dietary choices, smoking, obesity, diabetes, poor circulation, a sedentary lifestyle and poor blood glucose control. If you or someone you know suffers from a chronic, nonhealing wound, talk to your physician about a referral to the MedStar Health Wound Healing Center.

BREAST HEALTHEarly detection can save your life. That’s why self exams and routine mammograms are a must, especially for women older than 40 or who are at a high risk for developing breast cancer. For mammography, breast ultrasounds and many other diagnostic services, visit our imaging center designed exclusively for women. Call 240-434-7328.

Dear Healthy LivingDear MedStar St. Mary’s,

What a great visit! I was in obvious pain and your personnel

were professional, caring and, looking at a full (Emergency

Department) waiting room, efficient and just. Excellent

service from ALL!

H. Netzler, Lexington Park, Maryland

Dear MedStar St. Mary’s, You have so many dedicated, hard-working and compassionate nurses and techs. We especially appreciated whenever my mother’s dignity was respected. All were wonderful, but one (in Telemetry) really stands out. Courtney showed maturity beyond her years when she not only had to clean up my mother’s bedding several times but offered kindly to give her a bath as well, even in the wee hours of the morning! Mom and I were amazed by her professionalism! Thanks also Patty, Sara, Krysteen, Karen, the two newbie techs and others whose names I can’t recall.

Have a Blessed Day!

Sherry Harris, Great Mills, Maryland

Dear MedStar St. Mary’s,The hospitalists met with our large family and spent a very long time explaining all the options available for our sister-in-law in a very compassionate way. This very desperate family had many questions (and we didn’t always raise our hands!). We are grateful for the kind, compassionate care she has received here at this wonderful hospital!

Neal Adams to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital

I would like to thank the entire staff and surgical team

who did my shoulder replacement. From the pre-op

reception to being released the next day everyone went

above and beyond expectations. Every possible item and

consideration was covered. A heartfelt thank you to all.

Heather Kanakis to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital

I want to say a big thank you to Sarah, our ER nurse

Tuesday 9/28 and Ashley, our 2nd floor nurse last week.

They took such great care of my mom and went above

and beyond to make sure she had everything she needed.

John Baker

This hospital has a at home feel and a very attentive staff.

My 8-month-old was there for seizures and we were made

at home from the moment we walked in until the time we

left. The hospital by my house doesn’t even treat it’s own

the way you guys do. Keep up the good work.

Linda Burch

This is one of the best hospitals in Maryland. I have been

there numerous times for heart reasons. They are very

professional and compassionate doctors and nurses ...

I would also like to say that the outpatient pavilion for

cancer patients is wonderful. Dr. Kahn and his staff do

an outstanding job ... when you are sick and you need

someone to give you a hand to hold they’re there ... and

trusting someone with your life isn’t easy, but I also know

that I’m glad everyday I’m here that I did put my life in

their hands.
