Volume 16 Issue 11 November 2016

As October comes to an end, I am reminded of the old saying about March – that it comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. October has done just the opposite – it came in like a lamb and is going out like a lion. I am striving to put aside my grumpiness over the shorter days, colder weather, and cloudy skies and EMBRACE the change. I WILL raise my head and face into the wind-driven rain, sleet, and snow!

With the Halloween decorations brightening the Lake Flower Apartments’ first floor, it is easier to smile. Tenants, staff, and visi-tors are enjoying them. Thanks to all who contributed to the effort.

The elevator upgrade project progresses. If work continues as planned, Elevator #1 will be finished next week; and, work on Ele-vator #2 will begin immediately. Again, if all goes as planned, we’ll ring in the New Year with two mechanically new elevators.

Also at the Lake Flower Apartments, the new intercom system is in place. Maintenance staff are working out any problems as they are identified. If you have not yet touched base with Tammy about the system, please do so.

On November 11, please take some time to remember and thank our veterans and their families. They have sacrificed so much for us. I know I’ll thank my 90-year old father, a veteran of World War II.

Then, a couple of weeks after Veterans Day, it’s Thanksgiving – a

time for overall gratitude and thanks. Cherish the time with family

and friends.

TID BITS FROM DAVID SIEGRIST

N owhere is the weather more volatile than in the

Adirondacks

O nly the strong and maybe crazy people will

survive up here

V ery often, people only view New York as what’s

down in New York City

E nduring 40 below zero temperatures is something

everyone should have the opportunity to experience

M ore people are finding out that although it can

get cold outside, it is also beautiful

B iting wind chills are nothing to smile about

E very exposed skin surface should be covered to

prevent frost bite

R emember that summer is only 232 days away with a

sunburn on the horizon

RESIDENT NEWS AND ISSUES...By Debbie Zerrahn

Yes, it’s true. The first snowfall has arrived. Thank goodness it did not last long. Clean out that unwanted stuff in your backyard. The dumpsters are there for your use. As I write this article, Halloween hasn’t arrived, but Christmas candy is already hitting the stands. Thanksgiving will be here faster than you know. Please plan now for the added expenses of the holiday sea-sons. Your rent must be paid on time to avoid the unpleas-ant consequence. Lake Flower residents, get ready for your annual re-certifications. Algonquin residents’ recertifications will be completed after the holidays. Christmas break will be here sooner than later. Think about outdoors activities for your children. A busy child is a happy one. Happy Holidays everyone….until next month.

Volume 16 Issue 11 HAPPY HEALTHY ATTITUDES

In honor of Veterans Day - We will soon see the pictures of Veter-ans who are part of the Housing Authority family. If you or a fami-ly member have served in the services, please bring Irene a picture in order to be displayed.

The next few months will be busy with holidays and activi-ties. Keep a look out for upcoming events. Also, make sure your neighbors know. The activities offered are a great way to be social without having to leave the building - especially with the winter weather upon us.

Thank you to those residents who donated candy to the trick-or-treaters.

Page 10: HEALTHY HAPPY ATTITUDESharrietstownha.org/images/HHA_November_2016_Newsletter.pdf · Lou Ferrigno 11/09 Miranda Lambert 11/10 Ellen Pompeo 11/10 Leonardo DeCaprio 11/11 Demi Moore

Where should you look?

Mattress (piping, sides, underside)

Box spring (remove ticking)

Bed frame

Linens

Furniture – seams, pleats, piping, joints

Corners and drawers of desks, dressers, etc.

Door, window, and baseboard trim

Items on the floor

What should you look for?

All life stages: eggs, nymphs, adults

Skin casts

Blood spots

How do you avoid them?

Carefully inspect all used furniture, linens, and clothing be-

fore bringing them into your home.

Wash and dry clothes on hottest setting items can

stand. Transport clothes in plastic bags. Do not

put clean clothes in bags used to transport dirty

clothes. Throw those away!

Vacuum frequently.

Remove clutter.

If possible, use a high powered flashlight when looking

around your unit. If you find a bed bug, notify staff immedi-

ately. Staff and you will work together to prepare for any

needed treatment. Don’t delay. It’s much easier to treat one or

two than it is twenty or thirty. Again, successful eradication

requires resident involvement and cooperation.

The sooner we know, the lower the cost to you.

Veterans Day Reflections

On Veterans Day, Remembrance Day, Armistice Day or the Day of Peace—this day has many names—the world stops in silence to pay tribute to the heroes of the battle-field who never see themselves as heroes. To that, I say we owe veterans more than our silence, our memories, our thanks.

For the last century, we have celebrated our Veterans on this day. When the cannons of World War I were si-lenced, we thought we had fought the “war to end all wars,” but as history proved, we still needed our Soldiers.

We are here to celebrate the strength, courage and dedi-cation of our veterans who not only wield the hammer of conflict but also shape the world for lasting peace.

It takes a profound strength to wear this nation’s uni-form. Though one day they remove this uniform, no amount of time, nor strife can sever the golden thread uniting these veterans in a unique and everlasting bond.

Once a Soldier, a Soldier for Life.

This uniform has changed many times in the last 237 years. What hasn’t changed has been the determination and spiritual strength of the men and women willing to serve this nation.

Every one of our Soldiers, veterans and their families de-serve to be applauded for their strength, devotion and service to this nation. Though we came here today to thank them for their service, we know they deserve so much more.
