Approval upheldCentegra Hospital–Huntley project moves toward construction phase

C entegra Health System looks forward to moving into the construction phase of

Centegra Hospital–Huntley after the decision made by the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board to approve the hospital project was upheld by Will County Circuit Court Judge Bobbi Petrungaro on Nov. 8. This is only the second hospital to be approved in the state of Illinois in the last 30 years.

“We appreciate the judge’s thoughtful review of the state’s decision,” says Michael S. Eesley, chief executive offi cer of Centegra Health System. “In a comprehensive 16-page decision, the judge ruled in our favor on every substantive and procedural issue raised by the three separate complaints of our opponents Mercy Alliance; Advocate Hospital and Health Corporation; and Sherman Hospital, now Advocate Sherman Hospital. The judge also dismissed all three of their complaints.”

Eesley says Centegra Health System appreciates the support it received from more than 16,000 community members, businesses and regional government offi cials during the three-year approval process for Centegra Hospital–Huntley.

Centegra Hospital–Huntley will be a 360,000-square-

foot, 128-bed facility that offers state-of-the-art technology, private patient rooms and a bright and airy architectural design intended to facilitate wellness and recovery. The hospital will feature a full-service emergency department, Level II nursery, non-invasive cardiology services, a dedicated women’s center and a helipad for transporting patients with the most critical needs.

“We plan to break ground in the spring and we are on track to treat our fi rst patients in 2016,” Eesley says. “During this three-year process, we remained confi dent this hospital project was in the best interest of the residents who call our community home.”

ince the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was passed in 2010, major changes

have been occurring in the country’s health care systems. Even more changes are coming Jan. 1, when key provisions of the ACA take effect.

Jan. 1 is when nearly everyone will be required to have health insurance and can no longer be denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition. Coverage limits on most covered benefi ts become a thing of the past then too.

Through all of these changes, Centegra has remained committed to providing excellent patient care. That’s always going to be the case. In fact, our goal has been to be proactive rather than reactive when faced with change.

“Centegra has been ahead of the curve for some time with respect to the overall health care delivery system and what’s needed to survive and thrive in the new world,” says Jeff Schmidt, senior vice president of clinical integration and payer strategies.

TEAMING UP FOR WELLNESS Our preparations for the changes brought about by the ACA are apparent in the Centegra Health and Wellness Network. This is an association of Centegra Health System and hundreds of physicians who joined forces to help area residents better manage their health.

The network fi lls a vital role for the people of McHenry County by focusing on its members’ well-being. It offers a full range of services, from preventive care to advanced treatments.

Wellness and preventive care are areas of emphasis under the ACA. Also, many preventive services will now be covered by health plans. The idea is that stopping problems before they start helps everyone save money.

“Preventive care has proven to control costs much better than anything else,” says Schmidt.

QUALITY COUNTS Moving forward, hospitals will be reimbursed, to a great extent, based on patient outcomes and the quality of services the hospital provides rather than simply the quantity of services. This means offi cials will look to factors such as preventable hospital readmissions, immunization rates and blood sugar levels of people with diabetes to determine how well people are being cared for.

The Centegra Health and Wellness Network (CHWN) provides the framework for everyone involved with health care in our area to collaborate and address issues such as these. It helps ensure that area residents get the high-quality health care they deserve. At the same time, it

Health care reform:We’re ready!

moves us away from a fee-for-service model to a value-based model.

“We’ve already laid the foundation for a migration to that type of reimbursement platform,” says Schmidt. You can also rest assured that Centegra will continue to be a health care leader. “We try to stay one step ahead of the trends and anticipate what we need to do to be better,” says Schmidt. “We’ll remain steadfast in our mission.”

CHECK OUT THE ILLINOIS MARKETPLACETo help people who don’t have health insurance get it by Jan. 1, Illinois and other states have established marketplaces. There, you can see what’s available and compare your coverage options. Open enrollment for the marketplace began on Oct. 1, with coverage available as early as Jan. 1, 2014.

CHWN is a participating provider with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield HMO plan options available on the marketplace. To learn more about plans on the Illinois marketplace, visit becoveredillinois.org and click on “How Can I Be Covered?”

1,000 open heart surgeries

HealthSystem

n Oct. 4, the milestone 1,000th cardiac surgery was performed at Centegra

Hospital–McHenry. The cardiac surgery team, led by Thomas J. Hinkamp, MD, an independent board-certifi ed cardiothoracic surgeon on the medical staff at Centegra, performed the surgery on a 72-year-old man from McHenry.

“I congratulate Centegra Health System on this major milestone for cardiac care in our community,” Hinkamp said. “The health system has established a heart program that is widely recognized for its excellent patient outcomes and the 1,000th surgery refl ects the impact this program has had on people in McHenry County. One thousand patients have received advanced cardiac surgeries close to their homes.”

“We deliver care that is as good as any large metropolitan health system,” says Jamie Hursey, RN, CNOR, manager for cardiac diagnostic, invasive cardiac and robotic services at Centegra Health System. “You do not need to leave McHenry County to receive the highest level of care.”

From diagnostic services to emergency treatment and from surgical to non-surgical interventions, Centegra Health System offers advanced care. Our experienced staff provides exceptional care to ensure people do not have to travel outside our community for cardiac treatments.

FAST TREATMENT For some heart patients, the leading-edge treatment begins before they even reach the hospital’s front door.

“Many of our emergency medical services

personnel have the ability to perform 12-leadEKGs, or electrocardiograms, out in the fi eld,” Hursey says. Using electrodes attached to the skin, this non-invasive diagnostic procedure records 12 different electrical signals produced by the heart. “That allows us to assess the patient before he or she arrives at the hospital.”

That early intervention can lead to quicker diagnoses and treatment at the hospital. That is crucial for cardiac patients.

CHEST PAIN SPECIALISTS Expert care continues in the emergency departments at Centegra Hospital–McHenry and Centegra Hospital–Woodstock. Both are Chest Pain Centers, accredited by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC).

“We’re fully credentialed to care for any needs of cardiac patients experiencing chest pain,” Hursey says.

Centegra’s hospitals were the fi rst in the region to earn this distinction and are two of only 11 hospitals in Illinois with SCPC accreditation.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES Centegra Health System also offers many diagnostic procedures to detect heart irregularities, including:w Stress testing: Blood pressure and the

heart’s electrical activity are measured when the heart is working hard, either while the patient is exercising on a treadmill or after he or she has been given special medication.

w Echocardiogram: An ultrasound of the heart that shows the organ’s

structures as the heart beats.w Outpatient heart monitoring: A

variety of portable devices are used to monitor a patient’s heart rate and rhythm to determine what may be triggering irregularities that can cause palpitations or dizziness.

SURGICAL INTERVENTIONS When test results indicate a need for surgery, Centegra is ready.

On average, two to three open heart procedures are performed at Centegra each week, Hursey says. Operations may include coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG, pronounced cabbage), valve repair, valve replacement surgery or other specialized procedures to regulate heart rhythm or clear blocked arteries.

RECOGNIZING EXCELLENCE Centegra’s focus on high-quality care has earned a long list of certifi cations from a

Cath lab teams offer experienceA minimally invasive procedure called cardiac catheterization is often the best option to diagnose and treat many heart conditions.

The team at the Centegra Cardiac Catheterization Lab is the most experienced in McHenry County at cardiac catheterization. They perform more than 1,200 of these specialized procedures each year in three state-of-the-art labs in McHenry County.

Catheterization involves inserting a long, thin tube—a catheter—into a blood vessel and carefully threading it to the heart. Once it is in place, the doctor can perform a variety of tests and procedures, including:

w Angiography: This test uses a special dye to make the heart’s arteries clearly visible on X-rays. This can help your doctor diagnose heart disease or other problems.

w Angioplasty: The catheter is used to position a tiny balloon in a narrowed or blocked blood vessel. The balloon is infl ated to open the artery. Sometimes, a small mesh tube—a stent—is left in place to support the artery.Although many types of heart

problems can be addressed with catheterization, some patients will still need surgery, says Jamie Hursey, RN, CNOR, manager for cardiac diagnostic, invasive cardiac and robotic services at Centegra Health System.

“For the patients who have severe disease beyond what can be corrected with catheterization, we have a great open heart surgery team,” he says.

number of national organizations. They include:w The Platinum Performance Achievement

Award from the National Cardiovascular Data Registry. Centegra Hospital–McHenry is one of about 200 hospitals nationwide to receive this award. It is based on best-practice guidelines set by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association.

w Blue Distinction Center+ designation from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois. Centegra is one of the fi rst hospitals in the nation to receive the award, given for comprehensive cardiac care. “We must demonstrate success in meeting objective measures of patient outcomes set by Blue Cross, including quality, safety and cost effi ciency,” Hursey says. Centegra Hospital–McHenry is the only hospital in a more-than-20-mile radius to receive this award.

w Mission: Lifeline Bronze Award from the American Heart Association, which

evaluates Centegra’s standard of care for heart attack patients. The bronze is awarded to top-performing hospitals after the fi rst 90 days of participation. After one year of participation, qualifying hospitals are awarded silver and after two years, gold. Additionally, members of the medical

staff have gone on to earn advanced specialty certifi cations. In the cath-eterization lab, for instance, many have obtained Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) qualifi cation. In the surgical suites, many have earned Certifi ed Nurse, Operating Room (CNOR) designation.

STAYING HEALTHY Of course, despite the availability of all the lifesaving expertise at Centegra Health System, it’s wise to do your best to avoid heart problems in the fi rst place.

“As a nurse, I would encourage people to not smoke, to watch their diet, to exercise

and to do what they can to prevent heart disease,” Hursey says. “But if they need us, we’re here for them.”

Be an eyewitness! To view Centegra’s 1,000th open heart surgery online, go to centegra.org/heartsurgery.

Need a new hip? Heal faster with anterior hip replacement

s it possible to take a surgery that’s already remarkably effective, even

lifechanging, and improve on it?Absolutely. Case in point: hip replacement.

It’s happening right here at Centegra Health System, where orthopedic surgeons are offering patients with worn-out hips an innovative alternative to traditional hip replacement surgery. It’s called anterior hip replacement surgery.

“The main advantage of the anterior approach to hip replacement is that it gives patients the chance for a speedier, easier recovery,” says Albi Qeli, MD, who learned the technique during his residency and has performed it at Centegra Hospital–McHenry since 2009.

MUSCLES ARE SPARED

In any type of hip replacement surgery, doctors replace severely damaged hip joints with brand-new ones made of metal, plastic or ceramic materials, allowing people who were often in constant pain to move comfortably again.

Typically, surgeons enter the joint from either the back or side of the hip, which requires them to cut through major muscle groups. In the anterior approach, however, surgeons enter from the front of the hip and only stretch the muscles to the side rather than cut them.

“The key muscles the hip needs to function are untouched, which means patients don’t need to wait for them to heal after surgery,” Dr. Qeli explains. “That’s why recovery is usually faster.”

How much faster? According to Dr. Qeli:w The average hospital stay for the anterior

approach is two to three days, compared to three to four days for standard surgery.

w Roughly half his patients who have undergone anterior replacements are either walking independently or only using canes at their visit two weeks after surgery. In contrast, roughly half of the patients with standard surgery are still dependent on walkers a month after surgery.

ADDITIONAL ADVANTAGES The new hip joint is also more stable. “This decreases the risk that the ball might pop out of, or dislocate from, its socket, one of the most common complications of replacement surgery,” says Dr. Qeli.

I

With a lower risk of dislocation, patients can move more freely. “After a standard replacement, there’s a list of don’ts,” says Dr. Qeli. “With the anterior approach, you don’t need these precautions.”

There’s a smaller incision, as well. Also, a highly specialized operating table and the use of fl uorosocopy allows surgeons to more precisely position the new hip, which helps artifi cial hips last longer. Fluoroscopy is a type of imaging that shows a continuous x-ray image on a monitor, much like an x-ray movie.

CHOOSE WITH CARE The good news: most people are candidates for the anterior approach.

“However, it’s a technically challenging surgery,” Dr. Qeli cautions. “It requires a highly skilled surgeon who is very familiar with the technique.”

Dr. Qeli joins orthopedic surgeons John Daniels, MD, and Robert Hall, MD, in performing the procedure at Centegra.

“You don’t have to travel far from home to benefi t from the latest surgery advances,” Dr. Qeli says.

To fi nd a doctor who can tell you more about anterior hip replacement, call 877-CENTEGRA.

“The art of dining well is no slight art, the pleasure not a slight pleasure.”

—Michel de Montaigne (1553–1592), French statesman, philosopher and essayist

Losing weight and gaining insight—with Centegra

iffany Marchyshyn was shopping for bigger clothes and her energy was

down. This was not good for a busy wife and full-time mom to a 1-year-old and a 4-year-old boy.

At a checkup for a thyroid condition, her endocrinologist, Centegra Health System’s Achal Ahmed, MD, voiced what Marchyshyn had been thinking.

“She told me I really had to lose weight or one day we’d be talking about diabetes,” says Marchyshyn, 31 at the time. “That scared me.”

Being overweight is a risk factor for diabetes and it’s also linked to high blood pressure, breathing problems, some cancers and many other health problems. More than two-thirds of Americans older than age 20 are overweight or obese, so concern about diabetes is on the rise.

READY FOR CHANGE That day at the doctor’s offi ce, something clicked for Marchyshyn. “I told Dr. Ahmed, ‘Give me six months to see what I can do,’” she says.

Already a member of the Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Center, she scheduled an assessment with a personal trainer.

Spending just one hour at the gym most days of the week became a priority. While the kids played in the on-site child care, she hit the treadmill, joined cardio classes and lifted weights. Slowly she built stamina and muscle.

She also worked closely with Meg

Burnham, one of Centegra’s registered dietitians.

“First, she had me keep track of what I ate, when I ate, my hunger level and even where I was eating,” Marchyshyn says. “It was an eye-opener.”

Marchyshyn learned to cook and shop differently. Meals shifted from convenience foods to fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains. Snacks are scheduled. She carefully watches portion sizes and she’s an avid label reader. “Sometimes just changing

Ready, set, go! How do you know if you’re overweight? One way is to check your body mass index (BMI), a formula based on height and weight. Overweight is a BMI of 25 to 29.9. Obesity is a BMI of 30 or higher.

To fi nd yours, use Centegra’s online BMI calculator at weighlesslivemore.org/bmi.

Centegra’s Weight-Loss Institute supports people at every stage of their nutrition and fi tness efforts, no matter their goal. Available programs include:

Rebalancing her lifebrands can lower calories and boost fi ber or protein,” she says.

After just six months, Marchyshyn, now 32, had dropped 42 pounds and lost 8½ inches from her waist. She felt great.

“I needed the one-on-one help from a trainer and nutrition expert,” she says. “They set up a program designed just for me and my life. Now my glucose, cholesterol and thyroid levels are all in the normal range and the doctor said I reversed my risk of developing diabetes.”

Her goal is to lose 20 more pounds and help her entire family live a healthier life.

“It takes a lot of effort for moms to put themselves fi rst, yet it’s worth it,” she says. “I know I’m setting a good example for my kids.”

“We should give as we would receive, cheerfully, quickly, and without hesitation; for there is no grace in a benefi t that sticks to the fi ngers.”

—Lucius Annaeus Seneca (c. 4 B.C.–A.D. 65), Roman statesman, philosopher and playwright

ony Pintozzi, 82, believes in committing to one’s goals. When he settled in

McHenry County, he was determined to grow a successful business in order to care for his growing family. Though it wasn’t always easy, Pintozzi stuck with it.

“I always say you never give up until you succeed in what you are trying to do,” he says.

A COMMITMENT TO HEALTH Pintozzi brings that same resolve to another of his objectives: growing great health care services close to home. When Pintozzi fi rst moved to the area in 1954, he joined with

Lee Gladstone, MD, to help expand the original McHenry Clinic. When the clinic added an addition, Pintozzi donated a room in honor of his mother and father.

“I wanted to pay tribute to my parents and I thought it was important to have a hospital in McHenry,” he says. “It was something the expanding community really needed.”

Over the years, Pintozzi watched the growth of Centegra Hospital–McHenry and Centegra Hospital–Woodstock (where most of the Pintozzi children were born) and witnessed the development of Centegra

GROWING TOGETHER As the system grew, so too did Pintozzi’s support. Today, he continues his service as a Centegra Health System Foundation board member. He also continues to donate funds to Centegra to meet the expanding health care demands of the community. “Donating is a must if you expect the hospital to move forward with bringing new technology into the community,” he says.

INTO THE FUTURE Pintozzi stresses the need for technology yet also talks about health care programs for kids and providing services to the community. He’s excited, as well, about the construction of the new Centegra Hospital–Huntley.

“The population there has exploded and now includes lots of seniors,” he says. “It will be fantastic to have a hospital close to them so they won’t have to travel.”

Being close by is not the only reason for choosing Centegra, Pintozzi says. “The staff at Centegra go out of their way to make people feel comfortable.

“When you go to Centegra, you get treated like a human being, not a number,” he says. “It’s almost like a home away from home.”

A LASTING LEGACY Now, Pintozzi’s son, Butch, is also involved in activities at Centegra. He knows that the gift made in his grandparents’ name, along with his father’s service, have created a legacy that will proudly represent the family for generations to come.

Consider making a donation to Centegra in honor of friends or family members. You can also make a donation to express gratitude to a caregiver. To learn more, call us at 847-802-7080 or email [email protected].
