Engineering + Nursing + Management
Bill Peine, George Chiu – MENancy Edwards – Nursing Leroy Schwarz – MGMT
04/22/2008 RCHE Conference on Research Solution for Healthcare
• Spring 2007– ME senior design + Nursing Leadership class – Improve patient handling and mobility
• Observations– Nursing students are not a part of the design team– Engineering students prefer to have continuous input and
feedback from the “customer”
Prelude
04/22/2008 RCHE Conference on Research Solution for Healthcare
Fall 2007…
• Generate design concept, conceptual prototype, clinical impact study, and business plan in a cross listed multidisciplinary course between Engineering, Nursing, and Management
• Nursing and Management students will be full time members on the design teams
• Engineering students will build functional prototypes in the following semester in Senior Design
• Provides better education on complete design processes and development for everyone

Karalyn Tellio
04/22/2008 RCHE Conference on Research Solution for Healthcare
– Novel Lumbar Intervertebral Disc Replacement
– Medical Image Processing with the goal of creating real time patient specific models from MRI/CT data.
Current Research
04/22/2008 RCHE Conference on Research Solution for Healthcare
– Broad introduction to device development– Applied introduction to device development– Exposes to business, federal regulations, healthcare regulations. Good to know no matter which aspect of the industry you end up entering.
Course Preparation for Field Research

Experiences in Healthcare Environment
– Intimidating• High risk venture
– High reward impact– Communication
04/22/2008 RCHE Conference on Research Solution for Healthcare
Learning from Experiences
– In research and development for the healthcare industry there are three main issues
• Money– Funding/insurance coverage is decreasing so the marketability and cost
of manufacturing become extremely important.
• Time– In the healthcare industry time costs not only in wages but in success
rates of procedures.
• Ease of use – So many products out there, must be able to figure it out on the spot.
04/22/2008 RCHE Conference on Research Solution for Healthcare
Learning from Experiences
– The key to success is Communication• Healthcare professional feedback
– In design and in market potential
