WHY MEASURING CHOLESTEROL IS IMPORTANT?

Cholesterol is vital for normal body function but high cholesterol levels increase therisk of coronary heart disease and disease of the arteries.

• Heart disease is the number one killer of women and men in Ireland with 22% ofpremature deaths (under age 65) caused by cardiovascular disease.

• The higher your blood cholesterol level, the greater your risks for developingheart disease or having a heart attack.

To help gauge your cardiovascular health you need to establish your cholesterol levelsas this can be a good indicator, this cannot be taken in isolation as other factors needto be taken into account.

There are two main types of Diabetes;

• Type 1 Diabetes normally occurs in childhood or early adult life, and requirestreatment with insulin injections. It is caused by the body’s own immunesystem destroying the insulin-making cells (beta-cells) of the pancreas.

• Type 2 Diabetes usually develops slowly in adulthood. It is progressive and cansometimes be treated with diet and exercise, but more often Type 2 diabetesmay require anti-diabetic medicine and/or insulin injections.

In Ireland there are over 30,000people living with undetectedDiabetes.

WHAT DOES THE TEST INVOLVE?

The test for diabetes involves a small painless finger prick or a sample being takenfrom your vein; the sample is then processed by our state of the art Biochemistryanalyser which will measure your glucose level, we will also analyse your sample onour HbA1c analyser which will give you the average level of glucose in your red bloodcells over a 120 day period.

• Exposure to certain chemicals.

WHAT DOES THE TEST INVOLVE?

To perform Spirometry test a person provides an exhalation into a filtered mouthpiecewhich is then measured by a Spirometer giving an indication of lung health.

The Spirometry test enables the nurse to detect symptoms of Respiratory Diseasebefore they become apparent. The results of the tests are given in certain values, which the nurse will explain.

“Respiratory Disease is the most common reasonto visit the G.P. Over a fih of people will visittheir G.P at least once a year because of arespiratory condition”.

“In the 18 – 44 age bracket more than 67,000 adults inIreland have been diagnosed with High blood pressure, this number increases to 950,000 amongst adults overthe age of 45 with 600,000 remaining undiagnosed”.

WHAT IS BLOOD PRESSURE?

Blood Pressure relates to blood moving around the body and as itmoves it pushes against the sides of the blood vessels. Thestrength of this pushing is your blood pressure.

WHY IS YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE IMPORTANT?

High Blood Pressure, or hypertension, is the single most common contributor tocardiovascular death, stroke, heart attacks, heart failure and end stage kidney disease.

Low Blood Pressure or hypotension is when blood pressure drops too low, it canrestrict the amount of blood flowing to your brain and other vital organs, which cancause fainting or dizziness and light headedness. This table below shows theclassification of blood pressure for adults who are 18 years and older.

WHAT DOES THE TEST INVOLVE?

Having your blood pressure tested is quick and easy. The screening nurse will use acuff that fits around your upper arm and is inflated so that it becomes tight.

Blood Pressure Category Systolic, mmHg Diastolic, mmHgHypotension < 90 < 60Desired 90–119 60–79Prehypertension 120–139 80–89Stage 1 Hypertension 140–159 90–99Stage 2 Hypertension 160–179 100–109Hypertensive Crisis ≥ 180 ≥ 110

WHAT IS CARDIAC SCREENING?

An ECG can show a number of Heart Conditions including:

• A previous Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack)

• An Enlarged Heart that is working under strain

• Fast, slow or irregular heartbeats (Arrhythmias)

WHO SHOULD BE SCREENED?

As the instance of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS) has become morecommon among males and females from 15 years of age upwards, especiallyindividuals who engage in sporting activities should have a cardiac screen.

It is also important as approaching and during middle age that individuals undertakea comprehensive health screen which would include cardiac tests to screen forCoronary Heart Disease (CHD).

Screening may include but is not limited to an Electrocardiogram (ECG), BloodPressure Measurement, Body Mass Index (BMI), Lung Function (Spirometry) andrelevant Blood Tests such as Blood Cholesterol.

WHAT DOES THE TEST INVOLVE?

Electrodes will be attached to your chest, arms and legs. These are then connectedto the ECG instrument. After tests have been carried out, your results will bereviewed and reported on by our Consultant Cardiologist.

Any cardiac tests carried out within our healthscreening programmes will be subject to review byour Consultant Cardiologist.

AGE RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION VISION TESTS

Age Related Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of irreversible blindness inpeople over the age of 50.

Age Related Macular Degeneration as the name suggests occurs with increasingage, and results in the degeneration of the macula.

Central vision is normally unaffected in the early stages. Loss of central visionoccurs with late AMD.

Age Related Macular Degeneration is due to free radicals within the eye. Freeradicals are unstable substances produced in response to our use of oxygen andblue light entering the eye. As we all breathe in oxygen and are exposed to blue lightAMD is practically unavoidable. “The condition is worsened by smoking, beingoverweight having high cholesterol, high blood pressure and a poor diet”.
