•Curriculum is mandated by the NYS Dept. of Health, with regulations that determine eligibility for certification. Classroom instruction includes infection control, basic nursing skills, body structure and function, the job seeking process, and computer skills related to the nurse aide documentation in the health care industry. Class time will be set aside to meet for required clinical hours (108) in a skilled nursing facility. Upon successful completion of this program the student is qualified to test for state certification. The course instructor is the only authorized agent to recommend a student for testing. If the course instructor feels that the student should not be recommended for testing, a letter will be placed in the students file with the reasons for the decision. Prerequisites: Successful completion of Principles of Health Occupations Course 775 (Can not be taken simultaneously). Course Requirements: Must be in good physical health with an updated physical exam documented in the last year and up to date on all immunizations (per NYS Ed. Law 2164 and NYS Dept. of Health Regulations Title: Section 766.11). Must be eligible to take State Certification exam by possessing a valid original social security card, photo id, and be able to read at a 6th grade reading level. 98% classroom attendance is required. Students can miss up to 7 hours of instruction. If the student misses over 7 hours, he/she is dropped from the course. 100% Clinical attendance is required. If the student misses the first clinical session, he/she is automatically dropped from the course. Note: State certification mandates a designated hour requirement as stated above. Student to teacher ratio for clinical is 10:01. Students who attend this program MUST have excellent attendance; have mature and responsible behavior, dedication to the residents (patients) assigned to the clinical area, and able to follow directions. Clinical rotation involves exposure and hands-on training with residents in a long term care facility. The student will be exposed to a variety of sights, sounds, and smells that require a mature approach and must have no physical barriers to caring for the resident population. IF THE INSTRUCTOR OBSERVES ANY BEHAVIOR OR SAFETY ISSUES IN THE FACILITY, THIS WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE REMOVAL FROM THE PROGRAM.
