"BbP aims to foster a life-long love of reading

and learning, increase literacy rates

and empower vulnerable children"

Buk bilong Pikinini celebrates 10 years of establishing libraries and promoting literacy in Papua New Guinea 1 September 2019 marked an amazing milestone for the charity Buk bilong Pikinini as they celebrated 10 years since their first shipment of children’s books from Sydney on 1 September 2009.

In that time SEAFAST has shipped around one million children’s books to Papua New Guinea, in 367 shipments and weighing over 287,000 kg. Through your donations we have sent three shipments since 2014, and we’re now collecting for our fourth.

What you can donate, in new or gently used condition 0-3 years - Baby - toddler • Toy/activity books - interactive, touch and feel & bath books, lift-

the-flap and board books. 3-6 years - Pre-Schoolers • All types of picture books, ABC activity/picture books, numbers

activity/picture books, bedtime/story-time books (to be read by adults)

• Readers level 1-15 are highly sought after! • Colouring books – educational or craft type

6-12 years - Early readers • All types of picture books (with longer stories than the above

category, very basic readers, educational nonfiction (health, science, geography, flora, fauna, cultural, etc.) and basic junior fiction.

• Colouring books and stickers • Educational/activity books (to improve skills in maths, reading,

writing) 12+ years - Reference/Teachers manuals • We are mainly looking for reference books such as: Atlas,

children's dictionaries (all types), children's encyclopaedia, etc. We do not need fiction or nonfiction books at this stage.

Posters: flags, ABCs, 1,2,3s, flora/fauna, maps, body parts, nice pictures of something educational, etc.

The Victorian public health and wellbeing plan 2019–2023 has been released The Victorian public health and wellbeing plan 2019–2023 continues the Victorian Government's vision for the public health and wellbeing of Victorians:

A Victoria free of the avoidable burden of disease and injury so that all Victorians can enjoy the highest attainable standards of health, wellbeing and participation at every age.

The plan provides continuity for the priorities of the previous plan, while recognising two leading threats to health and wellbeing globally: the health impacts of climate change and antimicrobial resistance (the ability to effectively treat infections in our community).

The plan gives additional focus to four priorities (focus areas) designed to drive coordinated action where we know we can make the greatest gains.

Document binding at the Library Would you like your document to be bound, with spiral coils and protective covers?

See Printing and Copying on the website for details, or contact us to discuss your individual needs.

Ovid Search Tip: Permuted index The Permuted Index tool allows you to view index terms in a different way than looking at them in the Tree or Thesaurus

Use the Permuted Index to search for thesaurus terms in Ovid when you think there is a thesaurus term containing the word you are interested in, but you are unsure of the exact term. While there is automatic mapping to thesaurus terms in the Search box, the Permuted Index will list all

thesaurus terms containing your search word along with related terms, synonyms, and preferred terms.

The Permuted Index is found in Search Tools. You may only search one word at a time.

For example, a search for cardiac will list the following thesaurus terms: Heart Arrest; Pacemaker, Artificial; Cardiac Catheters, etc.

[online] Controversies in pediatric appendicitis / Catherine J. Hunter, editor. Springer, 2019.

Although appendicitis is the leading cause of an acute surgical abdomen in children, many areas of controversy exist in diagnosis and medical and surgical management of this condition.

Written in a practical, easy-to-use format, this book provides a

thorough overview of these debated issues, careful to include perspectives on every aspect of care.

The book begins with an introductory framework that examines the history of pediatric appendicitis, the epidemiology of disease, defining a complicated diagnosis, the role and efficacy of laboratories in diagnosis, and use and overuse of radiographic imaging for appendicitis.

Later chapters cover antibiotic selection, surgical approaches to appendicitis, non-operative management of acute and perforated appendicitis, discussion of potential complications, as well as appendicitis in special pediatric situations like malignancy and other instances of immune suppression.

Each chapter follows a similar format, beginning with clinical vignettes and concluding with pearls and pitfalls to provide readers with necessary clinical grounding and context with which to examine each of these areas of current controversy.

[online] Endocrine surgery in children / Daniel J. Ledbetter, Paul R.V. Johnson, editors. Springer, 2017.

This book provides in-depth practical advice on how to manage children with endocrine conditions that may benefit from surgery.

It is more detailed than general pediatric surgery texts and more surgically oriented than endocrinology texts.

The first section is devoted to the thyroid and parathyroid, with detailed discussion of thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer, hyperthyroidism, hyperparathyroidism, and multiple endocrine neoplasia.

The second section on the pancreas focuses on nesidioblastosis, islet cell transplantation, the surgical treatment of diabetes, and surgical complications of diabetes.

Adrenal disorders are then discussed, followed by a section on the evaluation and management of ovarian and testicular torsion and tumors.

The closing section addresses miscellaneous topics such as gynecomastia in boys and growth restriction surgery.

[online] The pediatric and adolescent hip: essentials and evidence / Sattaya Alshryda … [et al], editors. Springer, 2019.

This book provides an evidence-based approach to treating the increasing number of children and adolescents presenting with hip disorders.

It integrates the most up-to-date data with essential knowledge, gleaned from decades of previous research and practice.

Each chapter provides a comprehensive text which integrates relevant pathophysiology, clinical assessment, and imaging, with an evidence-based approach to non-operative and operative management, authored by globally recognized experts in the field of pediatric hip surgery.

Detailed surgical techniques, illustrated with original medical drawings and accompanied by their respective indications, anticipated outcomes, and potential complications, are also featured, in this first orthopedic text dedicated solely to the pediatric and adolescent hip.

This will be an indispensable resource for wide spectrum of audience including paediatric orthopaedic surgeons, general practitioners, general orthopaedic surgeons, trauma surgeons, orthopaedic residents, emergency department doctors, and

physiotherapists seeking a clear and consistent evidence-based guide to treating the paediatric hip.

[online] Pediatric hypertension / edited by Joseph T. Flynn, Julie R. Ingelfinger, Karen Redwine. 4th ed. Springer, 2018.

This is the most comprehensive major reference work on hypertension in children and adolescents.

Since the publication of the previous edition, there have been notable changes in the field, with the arrival of new evidence of the long-term

sequelae of hypertension in youth, an evidence-based review of the value of routine BP screening in children and adolescents, and further evidence of the cardiovascular consequences of the childhood obesity epidemic.

This expanded edition covers these new findings, while featuring new chapters on such timely topics as routine blood pressure screening, hypertension in late adolescents/young adults, and current pediatric hypertension research.

The reference work also includes thorough updates on chapters from the previous edition, as well as new clinical practice guidelines for childhood hypertension, which have not been revised since 2004.
