Who defines the role of a hero? a humble individual who puts the needs of others first? there are many types of heroes in society. In health care, a hero can be any member of the multidisciplinary medical team — someone who goes the extra mile for patients, colleagues and the community. here’s a salute to some of our area’s exemplary professionals.

Former college quarterback Dr. Mark Meier still likes calling his own plays. He keeps long office hours and gives patients his personal cell number and e-mail address — a unique game
plan to say the least.“Being available for people means more than 9-to-4 hours or tak-
ing a day off every week,” says Meier, a family physician.Meier’s office in New Berlin is open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7
p.m., except Fridays, when it closes at 5 p.m. Patients can make same-day appointments or simply walk in to be seen.
Patients like being able to come in before or after work, Meier says, and they appreciate the consistent care he is able to offer.
Joe Bonneville, a full-time physician’s assistant, worked in emer-gency medicine for many years and “essentially functions as my internal urgent care center,” says Meier. The staff also includes two medical assistants and three receptionists. To build camaraderie, Meier urges his staff to eat lunch together daily. But don’t worry, if patients arrive between noon and 1 p.m., they are buzzed in and provided with the care they need.
After working in solo practice for 22 years, Meier joined Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare three years ago. He also serves as medical director for a group of 31 physicians.
He has encouraged other doctors to extend their hours, but so far none has matched his innovative schedule.
How does he make it all work? For one thing, his commute is just five minutes. He also credits his wife of more than 30 years and their five children.
“I have the best of both worlds — a great practice and a wonderful
family who supports my dedication to my practice,” Meier says. The doctor also prides himself on an inviting atmosphere in his
seven exam rooms. You’ll find sports memorabilia and even mini basketball hoops so youngsters can shoot buckets while waiting — all a nod to Meier’s own Division III football days and his subspe-cialty in sports medicine.
“People hate coming to the doctor. They’re uncomfortable, ner-vous and anxious,” says Meier. “I do everything I can to relax people and put them at ease.”
Being an effective and successful physician is about more than the likeability factor, Meier acknowledges. He graduated with hon-ors from the University of Chicago and went on to its prestigious Pritzker School of Medicine. “I can back up my ability with my aca-demic record,” he says.

Working as a parish nurse for Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital, Julia Means brings basic health care to some of Milwaukee’s poorest neighborhoods. Screenings can
turn up alarming numbers — 80 of 100 people she tested at one church were shown to have undiagnosed high blood pressure.
“The African-American community always looks to the church, even if they’re not regular church-goers,” Means says. “They still know they can get help at a church. At our clinics, we take you as you come.”
No surprise, then, that Means has made a church the home of Blanket of Love, the prenatal and parenting program she founded in 2005.
Each week, women and families enjoy a meal at Ebenezer Church of God in Christ, 3132 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, then break into groups for educational discussions.
Means was working as an intensive care nurse when she attend-ed a meeting concerning Milwaukee’s infant mortality problem. Disturbed by the situation, she got additional training in childbirth education so she could launch Blanket of Love, which assists about 60 women a year.
“My goal is to expand, because I know it works,” Means says. “If we can take it to other churches, we can affect 60 more girls a year.”
Means’ parish nurse duties include work at Ebenezer, as well as three Columbia St. Mary’s Community-based Chronic Disease Management clinics. The sites are a collaboration of Columbia St. Mary’s and the Medical College of Wisconsin. The focus is on free screening and management for hypertension, diabetes, obesity and smoking.
“If we can reduce a patient’s systolic (top) number (in a blood pressure reading), we can prevent them from having a stroke,” Means says.
As for Blanket of Love, Means says it is important because “when-ever your teenage daughter is pregnant, the family is in crisis.” She is always reaching out; she once met a pregnant woman at a Wal-Mart and invited her to a meeting. The woman arrived via the program’s van service with two young, hungry children, and they received the help they needed.
Blanket of Love is funded primarily by the CSM Foundation; some support has also come from March of Dimes.
Means has two adult children, including Demond Means, super-intendent of the Mequon-Theinsville School District; she is also a grandmother.
“Everything I would want for my grandchildren, I teach to my Blanket girls,” she says. “I want them to be our future teachers and doctors. They need all the help they can get.”

Q: If someone asked you to explain in 20 seconds what Best Doctors does, how would you answer? A: We are turning traditional notions of health care on their head. In today’s confusing maze of a health care system, we get people the right answers to their medical questions. Our approach involves figuring out what is actually wrong, asking the right questions, and getting the right answers from the world’s best expert physicians. We serve 30 million members around the world, and we believe that through our work we are on our way to changing health care forever.
Q: The public is hearing more about how often people are misdiagnosed. In this day and age, why is misdiagnosis happening in the first place?A: Doctors today are the best educated and best trained than at any time in history. They have the best technology out there. So how can misdiagnoses still happen? The problem is in how our health care system works. Doctors sometimes have to see 30 or more patients a day. What’s happening is doctors and patients just don’t have the time together that they need to ask all the right questions, and make the best decisions. It’s why we believe that misdiagnosis is a public health problem that doesn’t get the attention it absolutely deserves.
Q: Can you give us an example of a case where Best Doctors corrected a diagnosis? A: My favorite example is close to home – my own brother, Brad. He’s the co-creator of the TV show “Glee, and before coming to Best Doctors, he was incorrectly diagnosed with a malignant tumor in his spinal cord. His doctors had scheduled him for radiation and surgery to get rid of the tumor, but the trouble was, that wasn’t the condition he had.
We reviewed all of his medical information and family medical history, and our doctors found a clue that ended up being life-saving for him. It turned out we have a family history of a condition that could easily be confused for a malignant tumor. Best Doctors recommended some additional tests, which confirmed that he didn’t have a tumor at all. The treatment that was originally planned was in fact very dangerous, given his actual condition. Today, having received both the right diagnosis and right treatment from Best Doctors, he is doing great. What’s amazing about my brother’s case is that stories like his are more common than most of us think.
Our U.S. data from 2011 showed 29% of people had been misdiagnosed, while 60% required a change in treatment.
Q: What would you give as the #1 reason why Best Doctors continues its efforts to improve health care? A: The biggest reason why we come to work each day atBest Doctors is because we believe everyone should get the right care. While most people get the right care, far, far too many people still do not. There isn’t an easy way to fix the health care system, but we know we don’t need to wait for that — we can help people through our approach and physicians’ expertise today, and so we do.

WHAT CAN PEOPLE DO TO AVOID BEING
MISDIAGNOSED?1. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. It’s your health, and your life.
2. Always get a second opinion and focus on sharing your symptoms, rather than the diagnosis you received from your initial treating doctor.
3. Take the time to get to know your family medical history – and make sure your doctor knows about it.
4. Take someone with you to your doctor’s visits to help listen, take notes, and ask questions.
5. If you’ve been diagnosed with a type of cancer, always have your pathology re-checked.

County.“I always knew that gap was there, but I didn’t know how big it
was,” Voigt says. “A lot of people work, but they can’t afford insur-ance or they have huge deductibles.”
To help meet the need, the Lake Area Free Clinic opened in a small Oconomowoc storefront in 2001. Voigt was instrumental in establishing the clinic, which offers free preventive medical exams and treatment, lab and radiology services and referrals for follow-up care.
“We’ve diagnosed lymphoma and other cancers, hepatitis, asthma, cardiac disease — we’re virtually like any internal medicine physician’s office,” Voigt says.
Voigt holds down a full-time job as manager of ProHealth Care’s Diabetes Center, which operates three sites. She takes calls on weekends, allowing her to work at the free clinic one day a week. She volunteers many more hours on behalf of the clinic, including serving as chair of its board.
“I live, eat and breathe my work and the free clinic,” she says.Demand has increased with the recent recession, but the clinic
has been able to keep up, thanks to its move to larger quarters in 2009. Each month, more than 50 new patients are served. Funding comes from donations and grants. The clinic is one of eight organi-zations nationally to receive an American Medical Association grant for its diabetes program.
“There is endless energy with Donna,” says Mary Reich, execu-tive director. “She has the vision and gets things done.”
Voigt didn’t start college until she was 31, first earning an
associate degree from Waukesha County Technical College. She went to Marquette University for her bachelor’s in nursing and mas-ter’s as a nurse practitioner.
According to Voigt, health care providers need to show patients how to manage diabetes because it is a lifelong condition.
“I always say it is a ‘50-50 disease’ — 50 percent of the care the patient can take care of, such as diet, exercise, taking the medica-tions and checking the blood sugar, and 50 percent is the health care system,” she explains. “Once you put people in control, they do better all the way around.”
Voigt, 54, has diabetes on both sides of her family and admits, “I’m probably not as healthy as I should be.” She adds, “I can say I struggle with all my patients. What we have to do is be here to sup-port each other.”

Mary Kay Balchunas speaks in the soft, assured voice one would expect of a hospital chaplain. It’s one part work experience and one part life experience.
Balchunas has served as a chaplain at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin for 15 years, specializing in the intensive care units and emergency department.
“My role is to accompany patients and their families on a journey that quite frankly, they would never choose to take, but are forced to take,” Balchunas says.
When parents ask “Why my child?” Balchunas is there to listen, to pray if the family wants to, or “just to be a symbol of God’s love and care for them and for their children.”
Children’s has two full-time and six on-call chaplains. They hold a weekly prayer service that is attended mostly by hospital staffers, who also need spiritual support as they do their jobs. “We always feel badly when the outcome isn’t what the parents had hoped it would be,” Balchunas says. “Sometimes all the medical knowledge that is within our four walls is not enough.”
Balchunas, 62, is a lifelong learner. Her education includes bach-elor’s and master’s degrees in social work, and a master’s degree in pastoral ministry. Just last year Balchunas earned a PhD. in leader-ship. Her doctoral dissertation topic: initiatives designed to reduce violent crime. She knows well the toll violence takes. Her son, Jay, a special agent for the state Department of Justice, was killed during a 2004 robbery at age 34.
Balchunas generally doesn’t share her story with families she counsels because she doesn’t want the focus to be on her.
However, she did raise the subject recently in her volunteer work as chaplain for the New Berlin Police Department when she met with a woman whose adult son had died. “You’re not supposed to bury your child, but the grim reality is some of us have to do that,” Balchunas recalls telling her. “What helped me through that was drawing on inner strength I did not know I had, the support of a lot of people, and my faith.”
Balchunas believes in forgiveness and restorative justice. She has spoken to Milwaukee Public Schools classes, at churches, at a conference at Marquette University and at the Green Bay Correctional Institution. On behalf of Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and the national organization Mayors Against Illegal Guns, she met with legislators in Washington, D.C., last fall to support strong gun laws.

Debra Donovan, manager of the Sexual Assault Treatment Center at Aurora Sinai Medical Center, sees how job burn-out affects her staff.
Each year, the center treats about 600 victims of all ages, making it the largest sexual assault program in the state. Cases involving children are often the toughest emotionally, Donovan says.
“When a young child is found to have significant physical injuries (from sexual assault), that’s just stunning in a way you can hard-ly describe,” she says. “That might put people out of this kind of work.”
Donovan spent eight years on the front lines as a sexual assault nurse examiner. Since 2000, she has overseen a staff of nearly 30 nurses and master’s-level crisis counselors. The nurses are trained to assess victims, collect forensic evidence, treat STDs, offer emer-gency contraception and provide safety information. Most last less than three years on the job.
“You have to be able to recover in your own healthy way and not experience the compounding effects so that you bring it all with you when you come to the next patient,” Donovan says.
It takes a special personality to work in sexual assault treatment, Donovan says, who over the years has provided direct care to nearly 1,000 victims.
“You have to have a passion and understanding caring for vic-tims who have experienced a very interpersonal form of violence,” she explains. “You can make a very supportive first impression and response to help the person move forward in their recovery.”
Sexual assault nurse examiners are also called upon to testify in court. Sometimes, Donovan serves as an expert witness for the prosecution, other times for the defense.
Donovan works closely with police, the district attorney’s office and advocacy groups, and on professional committees. She’s also the on-call sexual assault resource for St. Joseph Hospital in West Bend. She wears a pager 24/7 nearly year-round so she can assist her staff and others.
Staying active helps Donovan, 59, deal with the stress of her job. She and her husband, a physician, have five children and three grandchildren. She got hooked on ice hockey in her 20s when she worked in Madison, and has played on coed and women’s hockey teams for years. She also directs hand bell choirs at two churches.
“You use the other part of your brain when you do music,” she says. “It’s a totally therapeutic outlet.”

Around the time nurse Sharron Coffie began pursuing a master’s degree, her younger sister was
diagnosed with heart failure. “I always thought heart failure was a disease for old-er people, and it is the most common diag-nosis for Medicare recipients,” says Coffie. “I was very shocked that my baby sister, who died at age 41, had heart failure.”
After her sister died in 2000, Coffie chan-neled her grief into action. She decided to dedicate her career to educating people about heart health, and now serves as a clinical nurse specialist in the heart failure program at Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Cardiac cases can involve as many as 50 different health professionals, accord-ing to Dr. Claudius Mahr, medical director of the Froedtert & MCW program. Coffie’s role is to connect patients with individual-ized, appropriate care. “There are a lot of people behind the scenes,” Mahr says.
“She’s one of our rock stars. She goes far beyond what would be expected.”
Coffie, 55, has worked at Froedtert for four years. In addition, she does presenta-tions throughout the area on behalf of the American Heart Association and has some involvement locally with First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign. She also serves on the Health Equity Council, the ad hoc health committee for OneMilwaukee and is a member of the NAACP.
She is president-elect of the Wisconsin Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists and membership chair of the Milwaukee chapter of the National Black Nurses Association.
Busy as she is, Coffie makes sure to exercise three or four times a week, limit sodium in her diet and get enough sleep.
There is a widespread lack of knowledge about heart health, says Coffie. Whether working with patients at Froedtert or out in the community, she stresses the basics
such as the heart association’s “Life’s Simple 7” approach.
Another problem is that many people don’t understand medical information and instructions. Patients with poor health lit-eracy skills are more likely to experience complications or be readmitted to the hos-pital, experts say.
Coffie uses the “teach back” method with patients, asking them to repeat back instructions in their own words so she is sure they know how to take their medi-cations. “I encourage health care work-ers, especially nurses, to go out into the community and volunteer their time to really help people, because it saves lives,” Coffie says.

Even before trading in the short lab coat of a medical student for the longer version reserved for doctors,
Elica Inagaki stood out.Inagaki spent her four years at the
Medical College of Wisconsin involved in a variety of community service projects: Habitat for Humanity, a bone marrow reg-istration drive and free clinics, just to name a few. The list of extracurricular activities is just as long, including an a capella choir, a hip-hop dance group and a student soft-ball team.
“The driving force is the interperson-al interaction with other people,” says Inagaki. “It’s that human touch that makes it very addicting.”
In several organizations and projects at MCW, Inagaki stepped into officer roles — technology chair for the Student Emergency Medicine Association, co-chair of the Ovation Awards ceremony, treasurer of the Student Surgical Society, and class
representative to the faculty council’s cur-riculum and evaluation committee. She also won the Walter Zeit Fellowship Leadership Award, which recognizes superior qualities of leadership, loyalty, selfless service, initia-tive and compassion toward both peers and to the Medical College.
Inagaki, 29, grew up in Georgia and earned her bachelor of science degree in neuroscience and behavioral biology at Emory University. Her next stop will be residency in general surgery at Boston University.
She has a d isarming laugh and quickly shuns any attempt to label her. “‘Overachiever’ is not the image I would want to project,” she says, “I like to be with a big group of people and try to complete a project together. It’s more of a teamwork (approach), instead of being on top.”
Dr. Kimberly Gandy was a big influence at MCW — she is a research scientist in the cardiothoracic surgery department. “She
would often take me to see the patients, to conferences and into the operating room and show me what she does and why she’s doing her research,” says Inagaki. “It gave me a broader perspective and definitely gave me an interest in her field of medicine.”
Inagaki is unsure how many outside activities she’ll be able to take on during her residency . “If I’m able to teach, be a com-munity leader and a good physician, that’s my main goal. If I can add research, that’s ideal,” she explains. “And if I can also have a family, that’s golden.”
