Spot The HazardEvery workplace has hazards, your school classroom is no different! Can you spot the hazards?

Types of Hazards

•Biological- bacteria/viruses

•Chemical -Physical, chemical, and toxic properties of a chemical. Fire, explosion, splashes or sprays from chemical products

•Ergonomic -noise, harmful dusts, unsuitable lighting levels, vibration, sources of radiation,

extremes of temperature, injury through poor design of tasks or machinery

Types of Hazards

•Physical - Manual handling, slipping, tripping, falling, gettingcaught or cut by machinery, equipment, falling objects, hot substances or surfaces, ejection of material, hand tools, poor housekeeping, electricity, fire, injury by another person

•Human - Stress, bullying, violence, vulnerable people such as new or inexperienced

workers

It is a Risk YOU Take!

• Risk is the likelihood that a hazard will actually cause harm, together with the severity of harm suffered

• For example, working with a scroll saw is a hazard. There may be a risk from flying debris, or from cutting yourself

• After a thorough assessment of RISK, you can specify control measures, or precautions, necessary to prevent accidents ….SUCH AS THESE ….from occurring.

What are the SAFETY Requirements?

1. Safe Working Conditions– Heating – Lighting – Indoor air quality – Ventilation – Noise – Vibration – Electromagnetic radiation

2. Safe Working Practices– correct use of personal protective

equipment, and use of safety checklists before using machinery

– importance of keeping the classroom tidy in order to minimise any risks

2: Safe Working Practices

• All equipment, machinery, and tools must be durable and safe for school use

• Use the proper tool for the task• No student to use any equipment until its

correct use has been demonstrated to them and they know how to use it safely. (Pass Safety Test)

Some Basic Safety Rules!

• Electricity• Never bend or remove the third prong from a cord.

Instead, use an adapter with 3 holes on one side and 2 prongs on the other side. The third prong on a three-wire cord provides a ground for electricity

• A polarized plug has one prong wider than the other. Never force this plug into the wall outlet. This could damage the plug and the outlet. You could even be electrocuted!

• Hot Glue Guns• When hot, glue will leak from the glue gun.• Always place the glue gun in the metal stand

when not in hand. Do not lay it on the table.• If you get hot glue on your fingers, wipe the

glue off immediately. Do not wait!!! The faster you get the hot glue off of your skin, the less of a burn you will have.

• Cutting Tools• Make sure you are using the correct cutting tool for

the material you are cutting.

• Balsa Wood Cutters are to be used to cut only balsa wood

• Use the table vise to avoid injury to your hands. • Box Cutters/Exacto Knives are used to cut

cardboard

• Solvents/Glue– Only the teacher is allowed to pour solvent from the

large container to the small container– Wear safety glasses and latex gloves when using the

solvent– Ensure the container is placed where it won’t be

knocked off the work table.– Use care and attention when handling the solvent– Use in small quantities of solvent on the work piece

• Heated Elements Heat Press/Strip Heater/Soldering Iron– only touch the handles of these tools– where heat resistant gloves

• Video Production– Be careful not to trip over the wires and tripod

legs – Be gentle when moving the light tripods.– Do not touch the bulbs at anytime

• Band Saw, Scroll Saw, Drill Press, Hand Tools

– Only use equipment that you have been taught how to properly use!......tests to follow

• No loose clothing, long hair or jewellery is allowed in the shop
